| AZNsupermarket08-15-07, 07:47 PM | HOLY ****! Check out the main page! http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd Does this have anything to do with 4th edition???? I guess we'll find out pretty darn soon. EDIT: Some have speculated that it has something to do with GenCon. Whatever it is, it must have something to do with D&D specifically because this message only appears at the D&D, Eberron, Forgotten Realms, and D&D Miniatures main pages, but it doesn't appear on anything not directly related to D&D that usually appears at GenCon like Star Wars RPG, Star Wars Miniatures, Dreamblade, Magic: The Gathering, or Axis & Allies. EDIT2: Due to Xyxox's excellent work, the discovery of a new moderator only forum devoted to the discussion of 4th edition practically confirms a 4th edition announcement. EDIT3: Well, it seems the moderators are catching on to the fact that we know that they know ect ect ect. Regular board members are no longer allowed to see the 4th edition discussion board and they deleted all references to it in this thread. LOL. |
| Crimson_Concerto08-15-07, 07:49 PM | :OMG! HOLY ****! :OMG! |
| Kojiro James08-15-07, 07:50 PM | Okay... you can start panicking now. |
| fatal error08-15-07, 07:50 PM | DUN DUN DUN! What it could be: 1) The website for D&D will now be 4 dimensional, please pick up polarized glasses at your local gaming store. 2) A release of four free adventure modules. 3) The release of rules for using Time as a fourth dimension in D&D movement. 4) THE RELEASE OF FOURTH EDITION In case of the last, Coolade will be provided at your local gaming store. |
| Audious08-15-07, 07:52 PM | I pooped a little. |
| Reinforcements08-15-07, 07:54 PM | DUN DUN DUN! I would laugh if they got everyone all anxious over a possible 4th Edition announcement and then went, "Nope! Just a tesseract!" |
| Kojiro James08-15-07, 07:56 PM | Good point... because 4DVENTURE seems very... punny. |
| SithGolem08-15-07, 07:58 PM | OH CRAP. I am really scared right now. I'm heading over to Half-price books soon. EDIT: It may not be the end. GenCon lasts 4 days and begins tomorrow, I think. |
| zzo3808-15-07, 07:58 PM | Where is the rest of the site? |
| fatal error08-15-07, 08:02 PM | You can slip past to Wizards.com/Magic or /D20modern , but you can't get into D&D. |
| Schemerrat08-15-07, 08:07 PM | lol, just 5 minutes ago it worked like normal ah no, that was just my imagination |
| Archus Forix08-15-07, 08:08 PM | well... @?){ me that is a blow... I'll have to wait 22 odd hours now... |
| Fairill08-15-07, 08:09 PM | Ok.. so who is the idiot who thought putting a countdown timer there was a good thing? I mean, it blocks access to all the articles! They're cutting everyone off for the duration of the timer! I mean honestly, someone fire the person who came up with the idea for that timer. |
| Kensan_Oni08-15-07, 08:10 PM | This probably has something to do with Gencon, which I know is going on this week, as all my artist freinds left yesterday morning for it. Probably has to do with 4 days of gaming, less then 4th Edition. (4D, not 4E?) Ah, we'll know tomorrow if we gotta nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. |
| Olaf the Stout08-15-07, 08:10 PM | So is it the announcement of the new Digital Initiative or 4E. I would think it would have to be one of the two. Olaf the Stout |
| SithGolem08-15-07, 08:11 PM | This probably has something to do with Gencon, which I know is going on this week, as all my artist freinds left yesterday morning for it. Probably has to do with 4 days of gaming, less then 4th Edition. (4D, not 4E?) Ah, we'll know tomorrow if we gotta nuke the site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure. Good call. If we are really unlucky though, they will announce 4th edition tomorrow at GenCon. |
| Archus Forix08-15-07, 08:18 PM | :heehee lmao |
| Qwicksilver08-15-07, 08:21 PM | Oh dear god no.... NOOOO Please, no 4th edition, I just got used to 3.5. |
| BEASTMAN_500008-15-07, 08:21 PM | They're ruining my life. |
| Kojiro James08-15-07, 08:27 PM | GenCon lasts 4 days? That makes a lot more sense now. Anyway, my gift for the doom sayers, in they case that the were finally right for once (it'd happen eventually anyway). http://kojisama.anberu.com/images/WhereIsPelor.jpg |

| davethebrave37108-15-07, 08:28 PM | This had better be about the fact that Gen Con is 4 days, or that Dungeon and Dragon will be joined online by...Dweomers and...Dirtnaps? |
| Genkai08-15-07, 08:29 PM | We know nothing about it, and you are already saying that it will <<SNIP>>/burn your 3.5 books/make children cry. It could be an enormous improvement! Throwing out Vancian Casting, Class fixes, making DnD more accessible, what could be the problem? Buying all the Core Books again won't be great, but if it is Backwards Compatible you could just implement some cool things from 4.0 to your existing campaign. No one is forcing you to buy it! |

Hmm, not good. Not good at all. However, are things like Magic: The Gathering and d20 Modern at GenCon? |
| davethebrave37108-15-07, 08:31 PM | We know nothing about it, and you are saying that it will rape your childhood/burn your 3.5 books/make children cry. Nope. No one forces me to buy food either. And what is more essential, D&D or food? WE ALL KNOW THE ANSWER |
| Archus Forix08-15-07, 08:32 PM | I don't think that it is 4E. Firstly, the page itself, it has 4Dventure, as someone said, not 4E. As someone else has said probably like 4 days of gaming I mean, look at the dice on the page, they would have put something else up if they intended something along the lines of 4E. Furthermore, they cannot bring out 4E because Eberron is too recent. What would be the point of making sales of something that would apparently become obsolete, when it is so new? If they were to bring out 4E, then major changes would have to be made, or something revoltionary would have to be done. What can we think of that would revolutionise D&D? The rules are relatively simple at the core mechanic and the only thing that they could, in reality, change atm is that mechanic, and thus it would stop being D&D. It would become, like, WoD or something, it would be horrible. So no, it cannot be 4E because everything about 3.5E and it subsequent conclusion doesn't add up. |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph08-15-07, 08:32 PM | Am I the only person on earth who likes Vancian casting? Jeebus... In other news: The end is nigh! The final trump has sounded! Fall down and tremble before the might of infuriating vague-ness! That is all. |
| Archus Forix08-15-07, 08:34 PM | Nope. No one forces me to buy food either. And what is more essential, D&D or food? D&D, definitely D&D. |
| Kojiro James08-15-07, 08:36 PM | Am I the only person on earth who likes Vancian casting? Jeebus... You're not alone, brother. I too am a fan of Vancian spellcasting. We're a rare breed, but we exist. |
| AZNsupermarket08-15-07, 08:39 PM | Hmm, not good. Not good at all. However, are things like Magic: The Gathering and d20 Modern at GenCon? Star Wars Miniatures, Dreamblade, Magic: The Gathering, and Axis & Allies were all at GenCon last year, therefore they probably will be here this year, but none of there sites were updated. http://wizards.com/default.asp?x=welcome/conventions/2006gencon |
| UndeadScottsman08-15-07, 08:42 PM | I don't think that it is 4E. Firstly, the page itself, it has 4Dventure, as someone said, not 4E. It doesn't say 4Dventure at all. That's a distinction you are making. It simply says 4DVENTURE; where the A in adventure is replaced with a 4. The D is in no way being portrayed as significant, not anymore than than the V or the rest of the word. It just says 4VENTURE, not 4DVENTURE, 4DVENTURE or 4DVETURE. :) |
| Nobby_Nobbs08-15-07, 08:44 PM | Hmm... Look at the background behind the dice. It has what could be part of an S, an ampersand (that's a & symbol, if you don't know), and the beginning of a D. This of course fits with the name Dungeons & Dragons. It looks very much like a logo to me. It's also a completely different from the configuration of the current D&D logo. This could either be A) just a logo for the countdown, or (what I think is more likely) B) the logo for Fourth Edition. |

I think that's part of a D, not an S (For D&D, rather than Dungeons and Dragons) but yeah, I agree with you. :D |

Anyway, my gift for the doom sayers, in they case that the were finally right for once (it'd happen eventually anyway). http://kojisama.anberu.com/images/WhereIsPelor.jpg Just had to get that on here again! Pure win! Oh, and Count Nerindil Van Seraph, I for one love vancian casting. -Gene |
| Xaer08-15-07, 08:52 PM | It's obviously an ad for a new SUV called the Ford Venture. |
| Archus Forix08-15-07, 08:58 PM | It doesn't say 4Dventure at all. That's a distinction you are making. Actually, someone else made that distinction, as I have pointed out ;) :P :D |
| UndeadScottsman08-15-07, 09:07 PM | Actually, someone else made that distinction, as I have pointed out ;) :P :D Cute, but you were making that distinction as well, and my point stands irregardless. :D |
| Qwicksilver08-15-07, 09:16 PM | It's obviously an ad for a new SUV called the Ford Venture. :heehee Yes, If only.... I hope it's not 4th edition. It's not that I love 3.5, actually I feel 3.5 is flawed in many areas, I just don't want to have to relearn everything, buy new books, and all of a sudden the ones I had are no longer going to be compatible. |
| Arctigear08-15-07, 09:26 PM | I think that's part of a D, not an S (For D&D, rather than Dungeons and Dragons) but yeah, I agree with you. :D The left letter seems too much lower than the right one to be the same to me... |
| Schemerrat08-15-07, 09:29 PM | I agree with UndeadScottsman, the reason it's 4D and not 4E, is because 4E doesn't spell adventure. Don't know why, but I sure hope it's gonna be 4th edition :evillaugh and the picture is D&D imo |
| Xavorin08-15-07, 09:30 PM | I must say that when I first saw the page I thought my browser was acting screwey. On further inspection, however, what it truly is became apparent. My personal theory is that it relates to some new form of D&D, and there does seem to be a 4th edition reference in there. I mean, come on: 4dventure? That's screaming "4th edition" or 4th something. |
| Count Nerindil Van Seraph08-15-07, 09:35 PM | Cute, but you were making that distinction as well, and my point stands irregardless. :D Regardless. The word you are grasping for is regardless. Irregardless is not a word. |
| Crusher21708-15-07, 09:36 PM | It's obviously an ad for a new SUV called the Ford Venture. That's what I said about half an hour ago on the future products thread of the same name. Great minds think alike, eh? |
| Crusher21708-15-07, 09:38 PM | I hope 4e just replaces the core, and allows all the 3.5 non-core to be completely compatable. Also I like vancian casting and power points, but I hate spell points, they just don't work so well. |
| Kojiro James08-15-07, 09:39 PM | Regardless. The word you are grasping for is regardless. Irregardless is not a word. It does seem to have a legacy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irregardless), though. |
| UndeadScottsman08-15-07, 09:42 PM | Regardless. The word you are grasping for is regardless. Irregardless is not a word. You know, I distinctly rememeber thinking that and correcting it when I wrote that message out. Oh well, my bad. |
| MarkHall08-15-07, 09:43 PM | Is it wrong that I'm giggling at the uproar this is caused? HAIL ERIS! |
| Xyxox08-15-07, 09:46 PM | With any luck, this will be the announcement of 4e. If so, I'll start purchasing WotC products again next year, so long as they have an OGL SRD with the new edition, otherwise there will be no need to upgrade. |
| KillerVole08-15-07, 09:57 PM | I hope it's not Fourth Edition. I suppose we just need to wait and see. No point panicking now. |
| BadCatMan08-15-07, 10:12 PM | If anyone cares to look at the source-code for the page, the javascript for the countdown is called 'dndcountdown4' and the image is simply called 'countdown'. |
| The White Sorcerer08-15-07, 10:14 PM | The left letter seems too much lower than the right one to be the same to me... If it's an S, it's about twice as big as the D on the right. |
| weasel0508-15-07, 10:41 PM | I truly doubt that it is a gen con reference because other wise it would be on more webpage’s than just DnD although gen con would be a good time to announce DnD 4th ed all those nerds with all that money in the one place its marketing genius and plus if you put it on sale without announcing it or releasing anything there is no chance that anyone can bag it out and people buy it on face value and out of hysteria. |
| Kojiro James08-15-07, 10:47 PM | Oh snap... they just moderated out the link..... |
| Einvaldurinn_mikli08-15-07, 10:48 PM | Oh man. Link is gone. |
| BadCatMan08-15-07, 10:50 PM | The total lack of information and the presence of Wish List threads leads me to suspect the whole thing is a diversion to keep 4e speculation contained where no-one else need trip over it. Or someone screwed up big time. :D Ooh, locked out, and lots of posts and threads have gone screwy. |
| Xyxox08-15-07, 10:50 PM | Hey! There's one D&D page that isn't the 4dventure thingie! Right here: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/dx20010401a :D |
| fatal error08-15-07, 10:50 PM | It all makes sense: The WizO forum is full of posts relating to suggestions and feedback for 4E. Meaning they are probably announcing a start to creation of 4E, rather than any sort of release. Furthermore, the 3.5 Rules Compendium is being released in October. This makes perfect sense, because that compendium will never be outdated, since 3.5 is going to cease production. The only thing that confuses me, is why are the thread in a secret forum, where only a WizO should be able to see/post on them? Unless, of course, Xyxov is a plant, and we were meant to find the forum. The supposed "secrecy" and conspiracy surrounding the event was meant to draw us in and extract feedback faster, and thus, we've all been being played like rats in a maze! The WizOs will be moderating this forum and others. They are acting on the direction of Wizards of the Coast, so if you're upset with their moderation, please don't take it out on the WizOs. Their goals will be clear: Keep 4th Edition discussion in the 4E forum. This might mean locking threads and/or moving posts. Clearly, not only the WizOs will be on those threads. . . |

| Schemerrat08-15-07, 10:52 PM | So I guess someone must have forgotten to turn off the 4th forums, but they're gone now... |
| jaelis08-15-07, 10:54 PM | The only thing that confuses me, is why are the thread in a secret forum, where only a WizO should be able to see/post on them? | weasel0508-15-07, 10:54 PM | wow i got in there just in time to get those little pop down boxes i guess they will do, i just cant close down my window :( |
| janco08-15-07, 10:55 PM | Oh man. Link is gone. Yeah that was weird. I actually just accessed that 4E forum, and then made the mistake of navigating away from it, then was locked out of it... weird stuff... Anyway, to be honest I'm not particularly bothered if 4E comes out. Especially if its not coming out till 2011 as per this article http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/dx20010401a Theres not too much point in worrying about now... |
| Xyxox08-15-07, 10:56 PM | WHERE DO YOU GET THESE LINKS? WizO in disguise? I found it on ENWorld. They have a thread about 4dventure, too. |
| TheYeti177508-15-07, 10:56 PM | WHERE DO YOU GET THESE LINKS? WizO in disguise? Heck I found them on quite a few other sites already. |
| Schemerrat08-15-07, 10:57 PM | above all, you got to love this: ...revolutionary d30 system... |
| Xyxox08-15-07, 10:57 PM | Yeah that was weird. I actually just accessed that 4E forum, and then made the mistake of navigating away from it, then was locked out of it... weird stuff... | Aseran08-15-07, 10:58 PM | Heh. Cat's outta the bag. |
| AZNsupermarket08-15-07, 10:59 PM | Hey! There's one D&D page that isn't the 4dventure thingie! Right here: http://www.wizards.com/dnd/article.asp?x=dnd/dx20010401a :D The date: April 1st 2001, in case anyone thought that this particular message was serious. |
| TheYeti177508-15-07, 10:59 PM | Yup can't access it now. Silly Wizards Silly WizO's Guess everyone forgot to drink their kool-aid today. |
| Xyxox08-15-07, 10:59 PM | Heh. Cat's outta the bag. Don't you mean the Djinni's out of the Bottle? Or would that be the Efreeti? |
| Raptorial08-15-07, 11:00 PM | Wait...April 1, 2011? Something's fishy here...is that pertaining to this event or another red herring of something else? EDIT: Saw the date. |
| Schemerrat08-15-07, 11:01 PM | The date: April 1st 2001, in case anyone thought that this particular message was serious. You mean we won't get a D30 system??? |

It's as you might have noticed a really old link to a joke. Why is it the only link to the D&D website though?(I haven't actually tried others, so I might be wrong) |
| Arctigear08-15-07, 11:09 PM | I love my browser's cache: http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c220/rvilliers/RPG/4E.jpg lol @ "www.WIZARDS.COMmunity So apparently they'll have their own sub-forum, looks like they're pretty far along. Poor Mike Lescault :weep: |
| UltimateReality08-15-07, 11:11 PM | You know what would be awesome? If it was an April Fool's prank. And after the countdown's done, the WizOs were all like "you said our April Fool's jokes sucked this year, well WHO'S LAUGHING NOW? How do you like them apples?" ... Yeah it's probably a hype for the announcement of 4E at GenCon...they already have a specific forum that they obviously screwed up viewing permissions on. So who's with me to go get 3.5 books at half price? :) |
| Xyxox08-15-07, 11:17 PM | You know what would be awesome? If it was an April Fool's prank. So who's with me to go get 3.5 books at half price? :) Remember, 3.5 is fine and it's open. There could even be a forking of D&D with a closed version of 4E and the open version via the 3.5 SRD. |
| Ash2Dust08-15-07, 11:19 PM | Assuming it's 4E that's causing all this rumpus, you'd think that, in the climate of 4E paranoia that's been going down for who knows how long, they would be better served by having a little sensitivity to the situation and not just sparking more paranoia. |
| Qwicksilver08-15-07, 11:20 PM | I love my browser's cache: http://i28.photobucket.com/albums/c220/rvilliers/RPG/4E.jpg Why does it have so many apparent postings already, when none of us can get to it? |
| vaerdhdragonkin08-15-07, 11:22 PM | Why does it have so many apparent postings already, when none of us can get to it? If it's to be believed, it's a WizO only thread. |
| Kaldair08-15-07, 11:22 PM | So why 6:30 P.M. tomorrow? And what is Vancian casting? |
| JongWK08-15-07, 11:23 PM | Why does it have so many apparent postings already, when none of us can get to it? People took the opportunity to post stuff before the Admins locked the 4E subforum (I remember Kremlin KOA from RPGnet and Dumpshock). I also made a post to see if they weren't fakes. |
| KillerVole08-15-07, 11:23 PM | Huh. I got in a post on the 4e forum, but now I'm locked out. Still, this could be good. Think of how cheap the 3.5 books will become. I'm just afraid that this is an excuse to reissue the complete books in a new format. |
| Qwicksilver08-15-07, 11:24 PM | how did you find the subforum? |
| Xyxox08-15-07, 11:24 PM | Why does it have so many apparent postings already, when none of us can get to it? You could get to it for a while, and post to it. They noticed and locked it down because, apparently, we weren't supposed to see it until after the announcement at 6:30 PM tomorrow at GenCon. |
| Einvaldurinn_mikli08-15-07, 11:24 PM | If it's to be believed, it's a WizO only thread. It was open for a while. I had four or five posts there. |
| Qwicksilver08-15-07, 11:27 PM | mmm cool. It's interesting wizards would do something so dramatic on their main d&d site to build up momentum for the official announcement. |
| Schemerrat08-15-07, 11:30 PM | But the question is, will they simply reopen 4th forum (http://forums.gleemax.com/forumdisplay.php?f=686), or delete our posts first? |
| Kaldair08-15-07, 11:31 PM | You could get to it for a while, and post to it. They noticed and locked it down because, apparently, we weren't supposed to see it until after the announcement at 6:30 PM tomorrow at GenCon. Certainly wouldn't be the first time the wizards community got info that wasn't supposed to be released yet... MTG Gatherer went down two days before future sight prerelease cuz it had been prematurely updated to include future sight. |
| shadzar08-15-07, 11:43 PM | whatever it is i find it funny to completely ruin the website with just some countdown clock. so you have absolutely no access to anything other than clock. real good way for new people to learn about D&D. oh D&D is just some vancy name for a clock! maybe D&D is dead in favor of this new product named with moronic typos or "leet" speak. h3ll5 y34h! 4dv3nt|_|r3! the reason i didn't look at this thread until now was because the name 4dventure. meaning someone i didn't want to deal with that used stupid leet speak or some other ridiculous internet form of typing. |

| Qwicksilver08-15-07, 11:48 PM | Dunno it is a bit annoying, but I'm sure they're probably doing it just to make it seem like some kind of meteor is falling from the sky that will change our lives forever. And whilst we see it falling, we can all cry about it to each other on theser forums.:P |

Except Tome of Battle. whatever it is i find it funny to completely ruin the website with just some countdown clock. so you have absolutely no access to anything other than clock. real good way for new people to learn about D&D. oh D&D is just some vancy name for a clock! How many newbies do you think are looking at the site in the next two days? How many do you think will not have checked or be checking alternative sources of information (Wikipedia, basic Google Search, Forums, etc.)? How many do you think might be intrigued by the fact that the main site has a giant countdown on it, meaning something is obviously up? Also, despite ridiculing someone for using a 4 for an A, you misspelled fancy, don't capitalize the first letter of sentences, and overuse line spacing. |

| Kojiro James08-16-07, 12:05 AM | Victory dance time for those who have argued 4th edition is around the corner. To be truthful, they had been arguing about it "being around the corner" since 2003 after 3.5's release. They were bound to be "right" eventually. |

| EvilPheemy08-16-07, 12:10 AM | I figure the announcement will officially start the 12 month "Countdown" to 4E. I'd be beyond stunned if they actually had 4th ed books at Gen Con. I'm bracing myself for the torrential flood of "I TOLD YOU SO" posts which will come crashing down over all the gaming boards I frequent. |
| Qwicksilver08-16-07, 12:11 AM | mmm, ah all the changes there'll be. You know their last podcast they were harshing on the Bard a whole lot. It makes me wonder what'll happen to them in 4e. The developers' angry wrath against the Bard class with excise it from all further editions and all campaign settings MUAHAHAHAHA. |
| graddlin08-16-07, 12:15 AM | Hmmm...,this is interesting. However, I highly doubt that this is the heralding of 4th Edition. Nobody freak out, it's all good...I think.:hides: Take care, friends. |

| ArcTan08-16-07, 12:38 AM | whatever it is i find it funny to completely ruin the website with just some countdown clock. so you have absolutely no access to anything other than clock. Since the clock is going to be up for less than a full 24-hour day, and will be replaced by entirely new content when the clock expires, I don't think it's really that big a deal. And I think you're finding stupid, petty reasons to be angry and bitter for no good reason, since no matter how many snippy posts you put up here, the chance that they're going to say "Surprise! 4e is actually old-school AD&D back again, with exactly the same books being reprinted, and shadzar is our new king!" is nil. |
| ArcTan08-16-07, 12:39 AM | To be truthful, they had been arguing about it "being around the corner" since 2003 after 3.5's release. They were bound to be "right" eventually. But it has been. Designers had leaked that 4e was being worked on right after 3.5's release, making vague statements about stuff they intended to put into 3.5 but had to save for 4e. The whole idea of 3.5 implies the upcoming existence of 4e, by definition. |

The whole idea of 3.5 implies the upcoming existence of 4e, by definition. But it doesn't imply official announcements each successive year like what the "4e is nigh!" people were trying to argue. |
| Ezram08-16-07, 12:45 AM | Hm, I might have to get a new bookshelf soon. |
| Krugg08-16-07, 12:50 AM | But it has been. Don't think I don't believe you - I just would like to read about the stuff intended for 4E because it didn't make it into 3.5. |

| ArcTan08-16-07, 01:11 AM | you seem to enjoy trolling. purposefully finding my posts or threads i have posted in in order to make personal attacks to me. harrasment is probably a violation of the CoC and i know that it and even internet stalking are crimes in this country. so i would advise you to stop this practice. Honestly, no, I'm not looking for you at all. You just keep showing up, and I wouldn't call it trolling, but everything you have to contribute seems to consist of negativity. So yes, I object to that. You seem to have a pretty low standard for a "personal attack" -- I'm attacking the fact that every time I see you on these boards you have nothing constructive to say except that 3e and WotC suck. my anger is in the fact that before i noticed or read anything about this 4dventure i went to look for osmething on the archives of D&D and saw that thing and then noticed where people said it was on all the pages. there is no reason for it unless something big is coming. unless they are pulling fart jokes like ADult Swim does on their april fools day lineup ruining the website as a joke. Er, 4e is kind of a big deal. A lot of people are very excited about it, and have been speculating about it for some time. Doing countdowns to make a big, noticeable announcement for such things is not actually a new or unique idea. I see no reason to be upset about the site being down for a day as a prelude to the site being *completely and totally changed* for a new, different product. Unless it's actually the product launch you're upset about. in any event they have ruined the website for any period of time since people cannot access the information they may have gone there looking for just because TPTB want to do something early rather than waiting for a more appropriate time to make an announcement or major board change and not giving forwarning for those that may have still had use for the infromation found on the old pages. One 24-hour-day is "too early"? but that is just something considerate people would do is let you know in advance changes are coming and if you want something get it while you can rather than just removing it. They're worried about the opposite, actually -- that if they'd announced 4e's release date a year early, that would've been a year of no profits, because everyone would've held off on buying 3e products in anticipation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_effect again the alienate the players thing as i mentioned to you in a few other threads....but we should carry that on elsewhere. I actually play D&D 3.5 and I'm not alienated. |

| nightside_samurai08-16-07, 01:38 AM | I got this before the threads got closed: Hello All. The announcement of 4th Edition is a pretty big event for all RPG fans. It's a huge event for all of us at Wizards of the Coast, including WotC staff and our WizO support team. We understand that this is something many of you are going to feel very passionate about in a number of ways. We've created this forum for few reasons. We want everyone to have a single discussion forum where they can get answers and information directly from the D&D staff. We also want to prevent the other forums from being overwhelmed with 4E posts to the point that it drowns out any of the natural discussion in those areas. Additionally, I want to have a single forum where our community can post their hopes, fears, concerns, and dreams about 4E. This will make it easier for the D&D staff to read community feedback, and to (hopefully) provide a lot of answers to your questions. If you have concerns, questions, or issues about the forum moderation taking place after the 4th Edition announcement, I've created a thread here where you may discuss your concerns. Finally, please try to be respectful in your posts and comments. Be nice to other posters, the WizOs, and WotC staff. The WizOs will be enforcing all Code of Conduct rules on all forums as usual. If you have any suggestions or ideas on how I can do a better job of helping to facilitate communication between the D&D Staff and the Community, I've created a thread here. Thanks! -Mike __________________ Mike Lescault Online Communities Manager Wizards of the Coast Host of Gamer Radio Zero Gamer_Zer0 is offline Report Post |
| WizO_Keldar08-16-07, 01:41 AM | There is always an element of frustration when things change. Inconvenience is often amplified by surprise. However, let's not turn our venting towards each other. Some have complaints; some think it is unfounded; all must have polite responses to one another according to the CoC. Thanks for your compliance, going forward. |
| calvinNhobbes08-16-07, 01:45 AM | I got this before the threads got closed: Interesting.... A game designed by the people for the people, perhaps? If WOTC really wants input from the fans on what they think 4th ED should include, then that is friggen AWESOME!!!!! I think we are all bursting with ideas, I know I am! |
| ShinoAburame08-16-07, 01:47 AM | I'm not excited one bit. A: I remember when it kept being said there was no 4edition nor was going to be and those who said so were madeout to be trolls. A friend of mine said this was do to rogue employees might leak information and could hurt all they worked for, which makes sense. However.. B: Somehow I doubt D&D will be anymore balanced from 4th to 3rd edition. d20, d30, d1962, the fighter will always get shafted and spellcasters will always be cheap. |
| Solaris08-16-07, 01:57 AM | The whole idea of 3.5 implies the upcoming existence of 4e, by definition. No it doesn't. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning#Software_versioning_ schemes) The ".5" was intended to reflect that it was a minor revision, not an entirely new version, and does not in itself imply that there would ever be a new version: Q: I'm nervous about the label "3.5." It implies that this upgrade will move us halfway toward a completely new version 4.0. Why was this number chosen, as opposed to 3.01 or 3.1? A: 'We actually talked about this quite a bit. We feel the changes we're making to the D&D RPG are important enough to warrant the "3.5" label, but not nearly significant enough to be a 4th edition. We also want to send the message that this is an upgrade, not a new edition. Whether we're "halfway" to a new edition, I couldn't say. I will say that I would have a hard time backing any upgrade beyond this that wasn't a new edition. A "3.1" label might imply there could be a bunch more upgrades before 4.0, and we don't want to imply that at all.' -- http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/rs/20030211a |
| ArcTan08-16-07, 01:59 AM | B: Somehow I doubt D&D will be anymore balanced from 4th to 3rd edition. d20, d30, d1962, the fighter will always get shafted and spellcasters will always be cheap. Actually, spellcasters were a lot less cheap in earlier editions (though mainly by being incredibly frustrating to play). The "might-vs-magic" balance is one of the things that's moved around wildly through D&D's edition history. |
| Elessar08-16-07, 02:08 AM | This is probably bad, but I'm going to my default stance of cautious optimism. Oh, and irregardless is definitely a word. So says Oxford English dictionary. It's an informal blend of the words irrespective and regardless. |
| ArcTan08-16-07, 02:10 AM | Any word can be a word if enough people use it. That doesn't make it a *good* word. |
| Solaris08-16-07, 02:14 AM | Any word can be a word if enough people use it. That doesn't make it a *good* word. Particularly since, in this case, it means the exact opposite of what the person using it intended: irregardless = without lack of regard = regardful. I would always rather learn and correct myself than try to justify my ignorance with cries of "but languages change!" but most people don't give a crap. That's okay, I guess, as long as their job applications will only ever be read by their fellow illiterates... |
| Jinnetics08-16-07, 02:28 AM | Any word can be a word if enough people use it. That doesn't make it a *good* word. Irregardless and regardless are practically interchangeable, in the same way flammable and inflammable are today. Language is fluid. |
| Redclock_the_Untimely08-16-07, 02:33 AM | This was on the D&D myspace blog under the heading: "INDI4NAPOLIS" Current Mood: Ecstatic http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/genConconsumerAd.jpg And please allow this thread to get back on topic and remember, words mean things and we should not attempt to change the language lightly. Besides, all attempts to change the language are part of a conspiracy by aliens to get us to deforest the earth by forcing us to endlessly print new dictionaries. Thus clearing the way for their strip mining operations. |
| MarkHall08-16-07, 02:33 AM | Irregardless and regardless are practically interchangeable, in the same way flammable and inflammable are today. Language is fluid. Yes, but that fluid shouldn't be diarrhea; there should be standards so that the words mean what they say. To do otherwise is doubleplusungood. |
| shadzar08-16-07, 02:45 AM | Hm, there is another page that can be accessed: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndlist&brand=dnd&year=All&tablesort=5 (the product release page). Trying to click on to other pages from it brings up the same 4dventure countdown though... this currently works also... http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndacc/215397200 seems like the compiled core books maybe monsters are missing.... seems similar to rules cyclopedia. only 160 pages for all the rules plus game designer commentary on why certain rules work the way they do.... something seems to be lacking there...like maybe about 500+ pages of rules. more considering the commentary of unknown quantity of pages is there. i don't see how that can be core product. :ahem: |
| ArcTan08-16-07, 02:49 AM | Rules Compendium has been in the pipeline for a while. I'm guessing that by rules they mean core mechanics -- stuff like how combat actions like grapple and trip work, the skeleton of each spellcasting system (how you shift essentia between soulmelds in Incarnum, how you augment powers in Psionics), and so on. They're probably not just leaving out monsters, but leaving out all the "content" of the rules as well as all the non-rules fluff, like all the races and classes and spells and equipment from the PHB, all the worldbuilding guidance and magic items and PrCs and such from the DMG, and almost all of the Monster Manual (except for the rules on how monsters themselves work, like how you advance a monster by HD and so on). There'll probably also be skeletons from the XPH (the "Psionic Powers Overview" from XPH minus everything about the actual classes and powers), Tome of Battle and *maybe* Magic of Incarnum, though don't quote me on that. |
| redmachined08-16-07, 02:52 AM | Alright, this is the final word: If it's like 3rd ed, except with all the builder books and new rules options and all the stuff from everything between ther PHB and the Magic Item Compendium pakced together, then yay! If it's like Star Wars Saga Edition, then prepare to see the death of Dungeons & Dragons. |

| ArcTan08-16-07, 02:53 AM | The former wouldn't require a 4th edition. It would just require something like, well, Rules Compendium. The latter is, frankly, what I expect. I think you'd have to be kind of naive to think that the recent release of SWSE has nothing to do with this announcement. D&D is dead. Long live D&D. |
| Nobby_Nobbs08-16-07, 03:02 AM | Or, it could be like SAGA and attract a lot of people who don't 3e. I like Saga quite a bit and hate 3e. If WoTC told me that 4e was identical to Saga in every way I would preorder it tomorrow. |

I have really weird feeling about 4th eddition (please don't make bad jokes at that statement :P ) On one hand this will give them a chance to make races/templates playable by players. Playing a werewolf or a vampire in 3.5 isn't possible without getting slaughtered. On the other hand I think they're turning this into magic. We have our new such and such out, you need it or our monsters in this book will kill you.... I just quit my job too.... Worst time for a new eddition to come out ever! THANKS FOR THE WARNING WIZARDS!!! |

| Elessar08-16-07, 04:24 AM | Another foreboding thing is that the artwork displayed at the top of the page there looks pretty World of Warcraft-ish to me. I see an epic set on that dwarf, and a draenei female... I liked the "look and feel" that was designed by Todd Lockwood for 3e, I don't know why they feel they need to change it to match another RPG phenomenon just because the other is more popular. From a marketing perspective, it seems very transparent to me what Wizards (read: Hasbro) is doing. They are detecting that 3e (and it's offspring 3.5e) are losing their grip on the gaming public. However, instead of improving their products rather than letting them continue to run out of steam, they're trying to copy other, more successful business models (like MySpace and now apparently, WoW). A good analogy for why this is silly is the Batman franchise of movies. When Batman and Robin came out, its ticket sales showed a decline since the ticket sales of the first Batman movie. A movie critic was cited as saying something along the lines of "Batman as a character apparently no longer appeals to movie-goers." Which of course, was bologna. As soon as Batman: Begins came out, ticket sales were phenomenal and now the series is revitalized. It just goes to show how important it is to make a good product. Make good products and you won't lose your audience. There would be no need for a 4e to boost sales. If 4e is indeed here, I'll hear them out. I'm not going to shun their product just because I can see that it exists as a marketing plan. If 4e is indeed here, what likely happened is the latest line of books were duds financially, but Wizards doesn't want to say something like "Yeah, we're running out of ideas," to justify things to their consumers, because those are scary words to Hasbro shareholders. So they'll release an edition that requires a complete system revamp, even though the current system is still pretty serviceable. While all of that is going on, they'll have some time to catch their breath and think of new ideas. If 4e turns out to be a system that is indeed superior enough to warrant this change, I'll buy it. Otherwise, it'll be just 3 more dud books. P.S. What's with all the hate for the word "irregardless?" Seriously, people on the internet get away with trash like "ORLY" and "Moar pwnage Plz" and some guy gets jumped on for using a colloquialism that's existed since the 1900's? It's like arguing over the pronunciation of "tomato." Found this article in the link above http://theminiaturespage.com/news/519193/ |
| DrowBattlemind08-16-07, 04:28 AM | above all, you got to love this: That was the 4E April Fools joke. somebody has a great sense of humor is all I can say. Heh. Cat's outta the bag. The date: April 1st 2001, in case anyone thought that this particular message was serious. You know what would be awesome? If it was an April Fool's prank. And after the countdown's done, the WizOs were all like "you said our April Fool's jokes sucked this year, well WHO'S LAUGHING NOW? How do you like them apples?" ... Yeah it's probably a hype for the announcement of 4E at GenCon...they already have a specific forum that they obviously screwed up viewing permissions on. So who's with me to go get 3.5 books at half price? :) Hmm... curious connections. 4th Ed rumors, 4 days of GenCon, and April Fools "joke" page stating that its being released in 2011... 4 YEARS from now... Or it's possible that it's just a big lead-up to GenCon. |
| DCAnderson08-16-07, 04:30 AM | http://theminiaturespage.com/news/519193/ Lump it fanboys! August 16, 2007 (Renton, WA) – Whether you storm a mad wizard's tower every week or haven't delved into a dungeon since you had a mullet and a mean pair of parachute pants, one thing is certain - millions of D&D players worldwide have anticipated the coming of 4th Edition for many years. Today, Wizards of the Coast confirms that the new edition will launch in May 2008 with the release of the D&D Player's Handbook. A pop culture icon, Dungeons & Dragons is the #1 tabletop roleplaying game in the world, and is revered by legions of gamers of all ages. The 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons game includes elements familiar to current D&D players, including illustrated rulebooks and pre-painted plastic miniatures. Also releasing next year will be new web-based tools and online community forums through the brand-new Dungeons & Dragons Insider (D&D Insider) digital offering. D&D Insider lowers the barriers of entry for new players while simultaneously offering the depth of play that appeals to veteran players. The 4th Edition rules emphasize faster game play, offer exciting new character options, and reduce the amount of "prep time" needed to run the game. D&D Insider includes a character creator that lets players design and equip their D&D characters, dungeon- and adventure-building tools for Dungeon Masters, online magazine content, and a digital game table that lets you play 24/7 on the internet — the perfect option for anyone who can't find time to get together. "We've been gathering player feedback for eight years," said Bill Slavicsek, R&D Director of Roleplaying and Miniatures Games at Wizards of the Coast. "Fourth Edition streamlines parts of the D&D game that are too complex, while enhancing the overall play experience. At its heart, it's still a tabletop game experience. However, D&D Insider makes it easier for players to create characters, run their games, and interact with the rest of the D&D community." Wizards of the Coast will release two 4th Edition preview books in December and January — Wizards Presents: Classes and Races and Wizards Presents: Worlds and Monsters. The first live demos of 4th Edition will happen at the D&D Experience gaming convention in Washington D.C. in February 2008. The full scope of 4th Edition books, miniatures, and adventures will be available in the spring and summer of 2008. Since its first release in 1974, the fantasy roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons has taken millions of players on imaginary adventures of epic scale. Today, D&D is universally regarded as the original game that created the roleplaying game category, and the inspiration for generations of game designers. D&D is enjoyed by millions of players worldwide, while countless more remember it with fond nostalgia. |
| ShadowX22208-16-07, 04:50 AM | I just got my D&D Basic game, Minis Starter, and Books the day this thing started and now I can't download Charchter Sheets and if 4E comes out I just wasted like $140-$160:mad: and if 4E does come out I won't be able to afford it:weep:! That D&D Insider thing is crazy, I got D&D to get away from the computer not play it on it, if I did want to play online I should play NWN or NWN2. I won't shoot it down but I only got 3.5 yesterday and I got it becuase they said 4E was not going to be out for a while. |
| darrylhaines08-16-07, 06:00 AM | For :censored:s sake, Gary Gygax isn't going to come to house and force you to punch in your credit card number and buy new books. Monte Cook won't kill you and take your stuff if you don't update. And you most certainly will not be taken to an indoctrination camp where you will be forced to unlearn all 3.5 you ever knew and hail the coming of the 4th edition. So in short, stop *****ing I've only started playing d&d since Sept 2006. I know that I don't have to play 4e. The thing is that my group will probably play 4e. I will buy the new books, it's just a bit of a downer finding out like this. No need to blow things all out of proportion mate... |

Say they were a gift for a friend and he didn't like them :D |
| gullas08-16-07, 06:33 AM | ahhh:eek: holy schnell , I'm not gona panic , I'm not gona panic .. .. .. .. OK I am paninckikng:mymy: :hides: |
| Otto the Bugbear08-16-07, 07:25 AM | I figure the announcement will officially start the 12 month "Countdown" to 4E. I'd be beyond stunned if they actually had 4th ed books at Gen Con. I'm bracing myself for the torrential flood of "I TOLD YOU SO" posts which will come crashing down over all the gaming boards I frequent. Not to mention the threads the follow shortly after that... "$th edition is coming!" |
| StarFyre08-16-07, 08:10 AM | someone mentioned it can't be 4E since it says 4dventure. But, look at it this way.. the a 4 kinda looks like an A (well..closer than other #s). then think of it like; 4dventure 4 Adventure Four Adventure For Adventure... Adventure could just be a marketting logo thing for 4E's launch/announcement. Also, could be something to do with 4 days at gencon...but i doubt it. Sanjay |
| Solaris08-16-07, 08:12 AM | .. |
| Crimhthan_The_Great08-16-07, 08:26 AM | I'll just be glad when the current nonsense runs its course and all the links on the site return to working order. |
| OravennasBrother08-16-07, 09:16 AM | Well (use Gomer Pyle Voice) "surprise surprise surprise" I believe (IIRC) that I mentioned in JANUARY that Gen-Con would be the prime date for an announcement of 4th edition. Then when Paizo lost their license, I pointed out it was a tactical step to releasing a 4th edition which was not OGL. "surprise surprise surprise" |
| WizO_Kayn08-16-07, 09:48 AM | *nudges you all back on topic* and be kind to each other, stop sniping! |
| _Jayne_Cobb_08-16-07, 09:51 AM | Oh noes! Something we know precisely nothing about has happened to the D&D page. Obviously that means it is bad. PANIC NOW! |
| InsertNameHere08-16-07, 09:54 AM | Guys, I don't give a (expletive deleted) about 4th edition or any of that (expletive deleted). I just want to reference something on the main D+D page - and I want to do it without waiting 8 hours. This is absurd. Regardless of whatever impending announcement you have, could you at least have the (expletive deleted) common sense to let us continue using your pages? (all expletives deleted voluntarily) |
| Shadowhowler08-16-07, 09:58 AM | Err.... What??? |
| Germelia08-16-07, 10:05 AM | It's quite inconvenient, this. Especially when you live in Europe. Do I seriously have to wait until AFTER MIDNIGHT? Guh. |
| qwerty108-16-07, 10:05 AM | It makes the Site USELESS!!! I cant even see Articles or anything else for that matter. :hoppingma The only reason I'm on the forums is because I bookmarked it! |
| Spikes01k08-16-07, 10:07 AM | Its about 4th ed. Its in the previews section... I am ******. |
| Phrennzy08-16-07, 10:19 AM | 4th Edition. Meh. I'll check it out. But I can't see learning a whole new set of rules yet again. I'd really like the main page to come back up so I can access the useful parts of the site. Locking it down is really lame. And I guess if it is 4th edition, that will pretty much be the end of me coming here, since everything (pretty much) will be discussing 4th ed, which I won't have/play. Feh, I guess I'll be forced to actually do work at work. Meh. |
| xmen51008-16-07, 11:10 AM | If it is a new edition that is coming out, than they are probably doing a major revision of the site itself to reflect this. This would take time to make sure the bugs are fixed. This way when it comes up everything will be ready to go for us. i don't mind so much as long a site IS getting a redesign. If they are just making us wait for the Hype alone, I'll be annoyed. |
| Lawlicron08-16-07, 11:13 AM | Oh noes! Something we know precisely nothing about has happened to the D&D page. Obviously that means it is bad. PANIC NOW! You heard him everyone. PANIC! FREAK OUT! |
| okaynowa08-16-07, 11:31 AM | Le freak? C'est chic. My only complaint is that now my house-rule revision project has to be put on hold. ... Aw, who am I kidding? Onward! |
| graddlin08-16-07, 12:16 PM | This could turn out to be nothing more than a way for WotC to get a rise out of everyone. Lots and lots of people have been posting junk about 4th Edition for quite some time, and perhaps the staff at WotC finally decided to prank the lot of us. However, I can't see WotC using the time and money it would require to prank us... Take care, friends. |
| Xyxox08-16-07, 12:33 PM | I just got my D&D Basic game, Minis Starter, and Books the day this thing started and now I can't download Charchter Sheets and if 4E comes out I just wasted like $140-$160:mad: and if 4E does come out I won't be able to afford it:weep:! Tehre will be a couple of supplemental books released, on in December and the other in January. These won't be 4E, though. The PHB will be released in May of next year. The DMG will be released in June, and the MM will be released in July. That means major playing at GenCon 2008, but not much before then though there will be introductory playing at D&D Experience in February. |
| Ultima007108-16-07, 12:53 PM | I'm just switching to 3.g        AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! *Puts on fire AND D&D 4.0 protective suit* Please tell me 4D stands for FOUR DEMENSIONAL! |
| Thadir08-16-07, 01:02 PM | Lets hope it wont be as buggy as 3.0. I mean that had a lot of bugs... Oh well the waiting game we can do that 2 lets wait till it comes out and is decent ;) |
| UltimateReality08-16-07, 02:07 PM | Or it's possible that it's just a big lead-up to GenCon.So, um, what about those 4E discussion forums that people posted screencaps of? 4th Edition. Meh. I'll check it out. But I can't see learning a whole new set of rules yet again.WotC has actually done me a great favour. I can lay off buying my 3rd edition books until 4th ed. comes out, because they will be cheaper then. Alternately, if the previews impress me enough, I'll hold off buying any 3rd ed books because I'll likely switch to the 4th ed. But, if I'm going to spend money on a 4th edition, and learn entirely new rules, I may as well check out some other systems. There's a shortlist of about half a dozen I've been meaning to try, and this will hopefully give my group the nudge they need to experiment more. |
