| evilagram04-02-06, 04:02 PM | But it's getting pretty close. I have a friend on the inside (sort of.) He recieves free D&D stuff because his uncle works in WoTC. He recently got a large book. It contained rules like in the 3.5e core rulebooks except there are TONS MORE!!! This thing sounds MASSIVE!!! From what I can tell it's some type of beta for 4e!!! I don't know too much yet, but it doesn't sound good. |

| speeblefreak04-02-06, 04:28 PM | TONS MORE!!! <snip> MASSIVE!!! <snip> some type of beta for 4e!!! The credibility of a statement is generally inversely porportionate to the number of superfluous exclamation points. |

| RottingColossus04-03-06, 03:07 AM | Just wondering if 4E is relased in 2020 if holodecks will used. Obviously, otherwise the super LARPers of tomorrows world will look silly just standing around throwing 'lightning bolts' at one another... :P |
| LowKey04-03-06, 03:19 AM | Man, even if April Fools wasnt a few days ago, I'd still call this fake. |
| RottingColossus04-03-06, 03:26 AM | Man, even if April Fools wasnt a few days ago, I'd still call this fake. The 'He recieves free D&D stuff because his uncle works in WoTC' comment kind of clinched it for me. |
| TheChilliGod04-03-06, 03:34 AM | I actually expected WoTC to put out a press release for 4e as it's April fools joke, rather than the My Little Pony gig. ... Yeah, I would seriously doubt that WoTC freely hands out top-secret beta material from an edition that many have fiercely defended the non-existence of, let alone allow that person to brag to his children and stuff without being fired right on the spot. |
| Radijs04-03-06, 05:40 AM | Nah they did the 4th edition a few years bag as an april fools gag. Windle poons was the zombie wizard IIRC. |
| LowKey04-03-06, 05:53 AM | The 'He recieves free D&D stuff because his uncle works in WoTC' comment kind of clinched it for me. Indeed. Did I happen to mention my dad owns WotC and I get free books and stuff, and I have the core 4 books of 4.5 edition? |
| babysamurai04-03-06, 07:29 AM | In Japan they already have 5th edition - of course it's smaller, faster and cheaper. |
| RottingColossus04-03-06, 08:32 AM | Indeed. Did I happen to mention my dad owns WotC and I get free books and stuff, and I have the core 4 books of 4.5 edition? The 4 core books, is that like the Everything Else Guide... :P |

| DDogwood04-03-06, 12:06 PM | In Japan they already have 5th edition - of course it's smaller, faster and cheaper. That's because they had to skip 4th edition... it's an unlucky number in Japan (kind of like some hotels go from the 12th to the 14th floor without anything in between). |

| evilagram04-10-06, 08:34 PM | I said might be and first thing, This ins't an april fools joke. second thing, I didn't believe him much either. Whatever he got was unmarked. You know it does seem kind of odd that he claims to have every single book and yet I've never seen a single one! |
| ReverendCow04-10-06, 10:20 PM | evilagram> Nice reversal. :rolleye2: I'm going to have to go with the crowd, saying: "Bull." Several OFFICIAL WoTC folks have said on the board several times that nothing 4.0 is even on their product schedule. |
| Edymnion04-10-06, 10:45 PM | You know, to my knowledge, Keith Baker himself doesn't even get free copies of every Eberron book that comes out, and he freaking created Eberron. And yet this kid's uncle "works" for WotC, and he gets free copies of everything? Come on kid, if you're going to run around trying to get attention, at least *TRY* to make it half-way believable. "My uncle works for WotC and I get all the books for free and one of them has lots and lots of new rules in it, its fourth edition and its going to be out any day now!" Yeah. Got any swamp land in Florida you want to try selling us next? Or a bridge maybe? |
| Vaalingrade Ashland04-10-06, 10:56 PM | Sir, I represent Bridge Direct (online at www.bridgedirect.com (http://www.ledgermaincomics.com)*), a discount bridge firm out of Brooklyn and I would appreciate it if you stopped disparging the name of good, hard working and most importantly honest bridge salesmen. Now what can I do to sell you the Wilson Bridge? Its just been completely expanded -- good as new. I'll even go over to the DMG board with you myself to help you pick out a nice troll to go under it. *link goes to my comic, not Bridge Direct. Bridge Direct does not, to my knowledge, exist. |

| serow_#R04-10-06, 11:32 PM | but it ain't exactly D&D 4th edition either what he actually got were the core rulebooks for the upcoming My Little Pony RPG, with the beta expansion series Donkey-Land Campaign Setting :) |
| Feor04-10-06, 11:53 PM | The only way this is true is if the supposed source of this got a beta book of the PHB2 and somehow the thread started got it into his head this was 4th edition, otherwise, Gorgon Dung. |
| babysamurai04-11-06, 05:38 AM | Actually, I don't see why people get their panties in a bunch over 4th edition. It will definitely come out one day, but I'm sure it will be as similar as 3.5 was to 3.0. It won't make all of your 3.x books obsolete - I still reference 1st edition books in my 3.5 campaign. They're not going to throw the d20 system out the window...more fine-tuning. Bring it on. |
| Deacon Liadon04-11-06, 07:09 AM | He couldn't be takiling about Arcana Unearthed could he? Or possibly Evolved. They are, after all, pretty big books so they match the description. |
| Beezelbob04-11-06, 07:41 AM | I suppose it's possible, but I would think it would be decidely easy to tell the difference between a Malhavoc Press item and a WotC item. :thinks: |
| Rivelstraz04-11-06, 09:26 AM | The only way this is true is if the supposed source of this got a beta book of the PHB2 and somehow the thread started got it into his head this was 4th edition, otherwise, Gorgon Dung. Could be. Imagination+Attention whoring+some random new about PHB2 = This guy. |
| evilagram04-11-06, 06:30 PM | I would just like to say That am calling this friend's bluff. He now says that when he was little he "clicked something" on the D&D website and now gets free D&D stuff shipped to his home. He also says that his uncle is an artist for some of the books. I, knowing that they mention the artist's name in every picture they draw, asked what his uncle's name was. He told me he didn't know HIS OWN UNCLE'S NAME!!! He said that he thought it was Marty and that he had changed his name a couple times because he didn't like my friend's father or something. He sounded very unsure of himself. I'm currently asking for some solid proof. I asked if he had d20 cyberscape, he had no idea what that was! He's supposedly bringing some books to prove his connection to WOTC tomorrow. Unfortunately I will be on vacation on thursday so I won't be able to update after that until next week. |
| narukagami04-11-06, 07:23 PM | When he was little? Depending on his age that could be back when TSR still had the d&d rights. Meaning that he shouldn't have been getting anything since WoTC bought the licence, were his story in the least true. Even if it does exsist, its probably somebody's printout of the SRD or 2nd ed rules or something. Your friend is an idiot and you are an even bigger one for listening to him in the first place. |
| Fargren04-11-06, 07:27 PM | If he told the true, maybe he just got a preview of the PHB II. It's coming out next month, you know? not a big deal. |
| MadRaccoon04-12-06, 03:04 AM | One of these days a game company is going to make a game system that is fully computer integrated. Then all the companies will do it, and eventually WotC will be one of them. A diceless paperless system that can be run from a single computer in such a way that roleplaying is entirely that...roleplaying. All the mechanics will be handled by computer "simulation." THAT will be 4th Edition. And it will rock your socks off. |

If you came to an agreement with your DM about a houserule, but it's not programmed into the system you couldn't do it. And talk about railroading, yeesh. I think the first company that tries that will crash and burn and the rest of the game companies will run to get as far away from it as they possibly can. |

THAT will be 4th Edition. And it will rock your socks off. If we want to play DnD on a computer, we'll buy the online version, and we don't even need a 4th edition to do it. In the advent of all the online and console-based RPGs, DnD is successful partly because of it's simplicity and lack of technology. |
| Edymnion04-12-06, 02:57 PM | The only way this is true is if the supposed source of this got a beta book of the PHB2 and somehow the thread started got it into his head this was 4th edition, otherwise, Gorgon Dung.If true, then he just got his uncle fired *AND* a massive lawsuit levied against him. Because anyone involved with working on those books do get PDF copies of them to work on, they also have to sign Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) that basically say "If I say anything about this to anybody you don't say is okay, I give you the right to sue me for every last dime I own". |
| evilagram04-12-06, 04:03 PM | If he told the true, maybe he just got a preview of the PHB II. It's coming out next month, you know? not a big deal. Hmm, maybe so ,although he did mention it before PHB2 was anounced. by the way I'm thirteen and he is a bit younger (either twelve or thirteen.) I am no fool. And I'd advise that you do not call me as such. I'm going to try and get him to bring whatever it is to school sometime. God I hope not, that sounds horrible. Why would you want a computer to handle everything? There'd be no room for creativity. I think the first company that tries that will crash and burn and the rest of the game companies will run to get as far away from it as they possibly can. But because the system would handle everything there would be no need for house rules because there wouldn't be any game mechanics to use them on and if a character wanted to create a magic item then there would be a freeform system for him to create it with. A VR D&D game would be the most successful game ever created. |
| ReverendCow04-12-06, 05:33 PM | And yet, I'm still not convinced. Now, if you were to provide us with an actual name for his uncle, as well as an exact title for the work which you are referring to, both verified by a Wiz_O, then I MIGHT buy it. Also, people use house rules because they don't like existing mechanics. What would happen if people didn't like certain mechanics of such a computerized system? They'd be screwed, wouldn't they? |
| Edymnion04-12-06, 05:42 PM | Hmm, maybe so ,although he did mention it before PHB2 was anounced. by the way I'm thirteen and he is a bit younger (either twelve or thirteen.) I am no fool. And I'd advise that you do not call me as such. I'm going to try and get him to bring whatever it is to school sometime.Okay... how to put this diplomatically... Your friend is lying through is freaking teeth for attention, he's pulling all of this stuff out of his butt, and you're buying it hook, line, and sinker. He has already proven that he is lying through his teeth in that he can't even give you the name of this mysterious uncle. Stop believing him. He is lying. Period. He does not have an uncle working for WotC, he has not seen anything, he is lying to get you to pay attention to him, and you are doing exactly that. He's playing you for a chump, and you're going right along with it. But because the system would handle everything there would be no need for house rules because there wouldn't be any game mechanics to use them on and if a character wanted to create a magic item then there would be a freeform system for him to create it with. A VR D&D game would be the most successful game ever created. No it wouldn't. I would not want to play a VR D&D game that was run entirely by computer. Computers cannot adapt, they can only do what they were programmed to do. If I wanted to snap a table leg off and use it as a club, I could in pen and paper, but I couldn't in any computer version unless someone had already thought of me doing exactly that and programmed it in. You cannot deviate from a computer game's pre-made plot. You cannot do anything it doesn't let you do. It is railroading plain and simple, and in the cases it isn't, there is no unifying plot, it would just be a fancy MMORPG, which already exist, and you can already wander around them in 3D. They are not the most successful game ever created, and most companies that try to run them go bankrupt. This isn't .HACK//Sign. |

At one point he had a Super Nintendo a year before they were supposed to be released. But of course he kept it up high in the closet where no one could see it and he never played it. He also claimed to own every single G I Joe action figure every made, but this massive collection was in storage and he only played with the 10 or so figures he actually liked. At one point he had a brand new 10-speed bicycle, but of course he had to keep it in the garage all the time and no one could go in the garage so he just rode his little bmx. The list goes on... |
| Sir Knight04-13-06, 07:45 AM | This is about the lamest thread I've read in a LONG time. Kids are silly... |
| pangalactic04-13-06, 04:22 PM | Ahh, I miss being a kid. Sometimes I wonder when gullibility became jaded cynicism. Then I look at my younger brother and realise that if I was still a kid I'd also still be a dick. |
| ReverendCow04-13-06, 06:20 PM | Ahh, I miss being a kid. Sometimes I wonder when gullibility became jaded cynicism. I can't speak for anyone else, but that happened gradually for me. It happened as each of my hopes and dreams were crushed under the hard-soled jack-boots of reality. |
| SOPI04-15-06, 11:30 AM | Ahh, I miss being a kid. Sometimes I wonder when gullibility became jaded cynicism. It happens when you hit puberty. First of all, the virtual D&D thing. NO! D&D is one of those games where it's not as much fun unless you sit at a table with your friends and are able to laugh, joke, play, and otherwise have a good time with your group members as you play the game. Second of all, the whole "My uncle works for WotC." thing is bull. I used to do stuff like that for a little while when I was in second and third grade (my dad works for Nintendo, I've got a cousin who works for WotC and supplies me with MtG cards*, etc.), and I can sense the lie easily. Don't let him make a fool out of you. *My cousin actually did supply me with MtG cards, but they were his old ones that he didn't use anymore, not ones from the WotC warehouses.** **Wait, does WotC have warehouses? |
| SolkaTruesilver04-15-06, 06:18 PM | First of all, the virtual D&D thing. F**K NO! (Pardon my French.) D&D is one of those games where it's not as much fun unless you sit at a table with your friends and are able to laugh, joke, play, and otherwise have a good time with your group members as you play the game. I don't think a computorized D&D would work, but an automated system would rock. You sit around the table, and each have they little "Computer-PC". That will automaticly "roll", apply each modifier for circumstance (and the DM's bonus or malus if he is generous/sadist) and telling you if you succeed. The DM would not have to prepare everything at hand. He just tell the story, and then ask the "Computer-DM" to generate "a party of orc, challenge rating 3 adapted for the party previously inputed." Or "Random dungeon, 12 to 15 rooms, in the "drow outpost" architecture", with the proper encounters and treasures. Ahh... that would be just a neat use of the technology... No more dices, better and quicked improvised area/encounters. Eventually, we could even have a computorized battlegrid, to see everyone's character, the spell effects.. etc... We could simply play our character, have crazy ideas, and have fun without having to know every rule by heart. |
| kaeso04-15-06, 07:45 PM | virtual D&D would totally work. It would be just like the Holodeck programs on the Enterprise in Startrek: the Next Generation. You would load the programs you want to play, and it'd be amazing. After all, Captain Picard sure likes role playing in a virtual world. *sigh* I'm a nerd, I know... |

You could decide to make out with the orc, and the Enterprise computer could keep up. You try that in a modern day game, and you wouldn't be able to do it, because the programmer didn't think of it first. |
| ORC_Paradox04-15-06, 08:55 PM | I wouldn't want such a thing. How many times did that holodeck screw up? If it wasn't the holodeck, it was the transporter. Just a friendly reminder to everyone: Do NOT try to get around the language filters. Doing so is a violation of the CoC and you will get a warning. |
| WizO_Cat04-15-06, 09:10 PM | I wouldn't want such a thing. How many times did that holodeck screw up? If it wasn't the holodeck, it was the transporter. You forget - I seriously think that the dilithyium crystals were made of paper mache ... :D |
| Vengeblade04-15-06, 10:27 PM | You forget - I seriously think that the dilithyium crystals were made of paper mache ... :D Are you trying to tell us that everyone who attacked the USS Enterprise really just wanted to have a pinata party? Because I would totally beleive that over the whole my uncle works for WotC story on this thread. |
| SolkaTruesilver04-15-06, 11:59 PM | Maybe not to the point of having a holodeck creating 100% of the universe (there would be no more DM!), but simply specialized computers (or software?) to assist DMs and Players about the fastidious 10000 rules of the games. And it's possible to do right now. I can imagine a good informatician player create a random generator working along preset parameters. Like: "Kind of ennemy party" (Orc, Drow, Giant, Troll, Rogues...), Challenge Rating, Composition of the PC Party, etc... And a good dungeon generator. The DM would not have to prepare everything ahead (he would only need to focus about the story and the NPCs). And could be lest frustated to learn that the PCs managed to go around the super-personnalized encounter of 10 Orc Heros he made 1 hour to design. |
| SOPI04-16-06, 02:08 AM | Just a friendly reminder to everyone: Do NOT try to get around the language filters. Doing so is a violation of the CoC and you will get a warning. Sorry. My bad. :( |
