With the advent of 4e on the horizon

4e is being worked on? I just thought people were being stupid.

why on earth would they release 4e now? I really don't think there is a call for it and 3.5e is rocking right now. Is anyone as confused as I am?

thought I would start a new thread with a reply...

What would cause wizards to come to the conclusion that we (the consumer) would need 4e now?

What, you don't have the books yet? They're great. Of course, they're only available in Japan, and they are in Japanese, but I'm sure they'll show up here soon.

I'm totally kidding by the way. People have been heralding 4e since about a week after 3.5 came out. There is no official statement about when it will come out, and periodically the developers tell people it's a good while off. Are they actually working on it right now? I doubt it. Are they thinking about what they want to do with it? I bet yes.

To be perfectly fair, there is no word from WotC that 4e is coming, but reasonable thinking, using what has happened at CMP, a lot of talk here, on En world and elsewhere, and the types of books being thrown out the door in Renton WA leads a lot of people to believe that 4e is on the event horizon.

There has been mention of a momentous announcement at this year's Winter Fantasy (I refuse to call it by the new name they gave it) and although I am not privy to what thatannouncement is, I can only think of one thing that would be given the "wait and see" hype - 4th Edition.

When thinking about whether now is a good time to release 4e or not, don't think in terms of being a Gamer - think more in the mindset of a corporation who does not want to go the way of TSR and lose money. This whole 4e thing will be about money - not a need to improve the game. Those calling for that level of modification are the equivalent of the D&D Social Abberant. :D

So at the moment, all is well, but there is a rot festering in the somewhat hallowed halls of our favorite game-maker. Rest easy - it gets worse from here on out.

Yeah, the "type of books", like more entries in the Complete series, which aren't at all full of feats and spells dependent upon the way Third Edition works.

You do realize that you can never actually get to the event horizon, right? Objects just accelerate up to the event horizon and stop.

Money.....Money.....Money
People willing to line up to buy every single D&D From WOTC Marketed.
Slap a D&D label on a Book and Many People feel that you can't play without it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there hasn't been an official announcment of the new "pay for bonus material" subscriptions mentioned in a recent D&D survey. I would guess that the finalized version of that will be the big announcement.

When 3.5e stop making money they'll think about 4e. Intill then be happy with what you have.

As seen from the outside, yes. The person approaching the 4th edition would reach it, but not appear to do so to people sticking to 3.5.

Unless 3.5 need a MAJOR overhual...i doubt that 4th will be coming out any time soon, however I wouldn't be suprised to see another unearthed arcana type book out for stuff for 3.5...

4th Edition had better not come for a long, long time with all the money I've invested in 3.5 Edition *shakes fist*

I am SO glad I only bought the 3.5 PHB when it came out, and not the other two core books. What urked me was that I had only purchased the 3.0's a couple months before they went 3.5 :headexplo

So I'm holding onto MY money and waiting for 5.0. ;)

This is going the way of the old 'Complete series' (which never seemed to be complete!)

Now I'm stuck with such lovelies as The Complete Sha'irs handbook, The Complete Gladiator's Handbook, The Complete Spacefarers handbook, The complete Ninjas handbook, The Complete Book of Villains, etc, etc...

I'm still waiting for "The Complete book of half-troll Elephant herding one armed Monkey Boyz" to make my collection truly complete.

the light actually decelerates away from the horizon until it comes into equilibrium. The object itself goes in.

Okay... What is it you are looking forward to about 4e? After you've answered that question, do it yourself. Example: I want to do hit locations! Solution: Playtest it until you have a rule everyone's happy with. Don't rely on WOTC to give you exactly what you want.

Meh, given the fact that there haven't even been any rumours on a new edition outside the wild theories bandied about at the release of 3.5, I'm fairly certain that 4e won't be released until at least 2008. Depending on how much more stuff they can squeeze out of us, 2010 is about the latest I see WotC holding it in before they release a new edition.

Do You see a big neon Sign on the Wizards site saying 4.0 coming soon no. Do you see allot of product release dates going probably into 2008 for 3.5 stock? Um yes. Until wizards actually starts asking for ideas as they are wont to do when designing lately I'm not lending any credence to this. 4.0 will not happen in this decade Thank you and goodnight

The planning for 3.5/4.0 was in the works as 3.0 was being released.

WotC never stopped planning for 4.0, even after 3.5 was released.

Always looking ahead, those chaps at WotC.

:)

p.s. They are listening to you too. That's how they do their planning. So be smart not silly or thoughtless when you complain or criticize the rules.

Oh for bloody hell sake ! Enough about this whole crap, I'm tired of seeing 4e threads poping here and there on these baords. Can't peoples just understand that it won't be released 'til Wotc says so ?

Sadly it would seem that they're incapable of it. Otherwise these Zeus-awful threads wouldn't keep cropping up.

Personal Speculation:
What if the so called 4E and this proposed subscription service are one and the same?

I too, as many above, do not see a P&P 4E anytime soon.

But, what are they going to call a web based subscription service, if there is one? The "D&D Experience", could you really get a lamer title?

"D&D Online", oops, already taken and abused.

So why not "D&D 4.0", has a nice software-ish sound to it... and kills 2 kinds of rumor threads in one name!

In all seriousness, I don't see any 4th Edition (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndlist&brand=All&year=2007&tablesort=1). In fact I see a bunch of 3.5. Sure, I guess if they are working on 4th, that's a good thing... Why? Because when they release it years and years down the line, it'll have a lot of thought put into it... and it might actually be properly edited too! Imagine... no errata!

The current release schedule for the Dungeons and Dragons roleplaying game extends to August of 2007, there is no announced revision of the D&D Rules on it.

When D&D 3.0 was revised for the 3.5 release (a revision, I might add, that can be played by supplementing the original 3.0 books with the revision data posted on the internet for free, thus making it possible to play D&D 3.5 without laying out any more hard-earned cash), opinions and playtest data was collected from players all around the world regarding what rules worked and which ones didn't. No such collection of data has been started.
