4e: A Tail of Two Puppies. [Archive] - Wizards Community

You are a young boy* who's just gotten off the bus from school. Your red backpack is slung over one shoulder as you rush to your front door. You can't wait to get your puppy and then all your friends together to play.
You enter the door and see your father throatkicking your puppy to death. He notices you and smiles. "How was your day son?" He sees the horror on your face. "Oh, that. Don't worry son, in nine months you'll be getting a new puppy. Sure, the new puppy was raised by people who don't like puppies, he's antisocial and doesn't care what you think of him, and you and your friends will have to learn to get along with a new puppy all over again; but just think of all the new fun you'll have. Besides, there really wasn't anything new that old puppy could do." He pauses, then smiles again "Oh and here's the best part. In three years we are going to put new puppy down and get another puppy. He'll look like the new puppy, and have a similar attitude, but new puppy.5 will be even better than new puppy. Isn't that great?"
Now my puppy may be missing some patches of fur. He may have cataracts and not hear as well as he used to. But I love my puppy and we have many more great years ahead of us, I intend to make the best of them.
*Before anyone calls this post sexist, I'd just like to point out that the character sheet says "male". If you are offended, take it up with the DM. I am just the narrator.

Seriously, I mean. Wow.

In any case, I think the actual scenario is more like a "getting a second puppy" when you've had your first for a while. Sure it might add to the expenses taking care of a new puppy, and maybe the old puppy won't get as much attention, but....what in the world were you trying to get at with a puppy-kicking metaphor? Go to the Doomsday thread in the 4e forums for this, but leave puppy-killing out of it! Personally, I'm gonna wait for more info to decide whether I like the idea of getting a new puppy......and I'm never using puppy metaphors again.

08-19-07, 12:19 PM Kicking puppies to death is pretty grotesque and emotionally upsetting. There's very little similarity between killing an innocent animal and discontinuing a product. I find the whole idea kind of offensive really.

There's no need to resort to sensationalism. Nobody is commiting a crime here. WotC is making D&D 4e. You still like D&D 3.5. There are people at a site called dragonsfoot who still like AD&D 1e and 2e and go on playing and supporting them. When WotC made 3e I guess those folks said "No thanks. The old one works fine for me." No animals were harmed.

They're just gonna stop making more. That's more like your dad telling you that he's not going to buy your puppy any more toys because you've got a lot, and then later getting your sister a new puppy and buying it new toys. Sure, you might be a little jealous of your sister, but why the heck should all that get in the way of you having fun with your puppy?

"Support" is a load of ****. A supplement treadmill is completely unnecessary. Tons of awesome games never have a single supplement written up for them -- often because they're just not necessary. Write your "core" book well and there'll likely be very few things that could go into another book. Of course, RPG publishers today almost all follow the "supplement treadmill" model because they figure that's how you can make a lot of money, so they get you to believe that you actually need those damn supplements -- which is what, in turn, causes people so much heartache whenever there's a reboot -- but it's all just marketing and bad design.
