Assuming this is an honest question, then no. There have been no official announcements from WOTC about 4E. The rumor mill is fat with gossip, which still causes this question to pop up on the boards every week or two.

I imagine it does. The reason I ask is that I'm running 3.0 right now. I would like to upgrade, but will wait for 4th ed if it's close enough.

I looked back through 2 pages to see if someone else asked before, but couldn't find a thread. Thanks for the input.

Not that I am going to switch, but my only hope to catch up on the 3.5 books I want is for 4th edition to come along. :)

4th edition came out last week. It only has a 23 hour release, then they cancelled it because in those 23 hours, someone devised a way to make an infant Pun Pun six seconds after the character's birth.

In economic terms, 4e development should start once current edition sales become sub-optimal for an extended period of time, probably around 3 quarters(sales seasons). It would probably take at least a year to develop a good edition, two years to develop a very great(is that correct grammar:P ) system. The well probably take the middle ground, as most companies do, so they can balance long term and short term profits.

This means if it started developing today, it would likely be launched mid 08. My guess is it's not in development, but in the discussion stages, which means that development may begin somewhere between mid to late 07, to release early to mid 09. this assumes that sales will be poor for the next two quarters, which seems may be likely as it appears they have cut back slightly on the amount of product they are putting out in the hopes of maximizing profit.

Of course, this is all business talk and purely speculation, but gives a solid idea of what may happen.

My guess is an announcement early 09, with it being released around mid 09 or holiday season(october) 09.

In other words, it's anybody outside of wizards guess, as they have the actually info.

Of course WotC was really planning 4th edition right from the moment they released 3E. But the large number of issues in 3E made them rush it out as 3.5, rather than wait for their planned date of 2005. Given that they had aleady planned once for the cycle to spike and fall in five years, it would seem likely they would plan the same way for whatever replaced 3.5.
Which of course means waiting to hear what the big news is at DDXP this year.

If you plan on 4th edition coming out in 2009 or 2010 you would be pretty safe. I seriously doubt we will see it any sooner then that though I expect 4th to come out sometime in the near future.

I think we'll get about a year's worth of advertising and little hints from WOTC when it does come out just because that's what they did with 3.0.

Course this is all speculation. ;)

Maybe you could pick up a 3.x varient to hold you over in the meantime? I recommend Black Company by Green Ronin personally. Or maybe Monte Cook's alternate game [forget the name...]?

Planning and developing are two different things though. Have you heard anything official that would confirm the are developing it.

And I doubt it will be announced this year, but it's all just opinion at this point.

It came out in 2000. Supporting the 2010 theory. The one made by Wizards.

7.67 is where it's at.

Reminds me of the 4th Edition thread where someone claimed that the Japanese were playing 7th Edition, and it was done entirely on PDA.

Doing all of 10 seconds of reasurch (and going beyond your question), I would say that 4ed won't come out before 2010. The evidence you might ask? History. My Ad&D (1st ed) has a copyright date of 1977, My AD&D 2ed PHB has a Copyright date of 1989, My PHB 3.0 has a copy right date of 2000.

Do we see a pattern? 12 years between AD&D and AD&D 2ed. and 11 years between AD&D 2ed and DnD 3.0. So, no sooner then 2010 for 4.0 based on this pattern.

Of course there is no reason that WoTC has to continue to follow this pattern, but really anything less then 10 years would prevent customers from being able to play coherent rules sets.

Actually, I heard they weren't even going to bother with a 4th edition. They are planning to just skip straight to 6.5; the new books are all going to be books on tape. Character sheets are going to come in the form of palm pilots which the DM can send information to via a small computerized DM screen.

That would be me.

But seriously, as others have said, I don't see it coming out before 2010ish.

I'm actually looking forward to 4th edition (3.75 maybe?). I'm hoping they won’t scrap the d20 system altogether, so that all of our 3.x books don't become totally obsolete.

For one thing, when it inevitably arrives, I hope they ditch the travesty of a mockery of a sham that is the CR system, and stop with the game being designed/balanced around this 4 encounters a day malarkey.
CharlieRock

02-07-07, 08:07 AM
balanced around this 4 encounters a day malarkey.
4ed will reward 1.5 times XP for every encounter over 4 per day. This will be referred to as the OTXP system. :D
bonethug0108

02-07-07, 08:28 AM
Overtime?!? xp:D

I think the cr is good in theory, but poor in execution. The biggest problem is it doesn't take into account the specific players in the group. It also seems to get progressively more difficult to be accurate as the players level up.

How you go about correcting that, I could not tell you. Maybe if the core classes are more balanced, especially at the higher levels, 4e cr may be more reliable.

And how many encounters per day do you want them to base it on? If you just want that part taken out all together, the pc's well still get tired eventually. If you are suggesting that the cr=pc, so that all resources are used in that encounter, I suppose that could work. Dm's could then decide how much of an actually challenge and how much of their resources are used. Then Dm's could throw a bunch of mini challenges at the players(as that is what equal cr's monster are right now), and then if he truly wants to challenge them, he throws in an equal level challenge instead.

I thinkif they scrapped d20, maybe the could implement a system where you could at least convert the current rules involving that aspect into it. It shouldn't be too hard to do. Maybe a 3d6 system, to steal an example from unearthed arcana.
Zumarai

02-07-07, 08:33 AM

I prefer the "per encounter" approach (ala ToB) to balancing classes, not the absurd assumption that the PC's have to have 4 encounters a day.

I prefer the "per encounter" approach (ala ToB) to balancing classes, not the absurd assumption that the PC's have to have 4 encounters a day.

I would also pefer that. It would make balancing a trillion times easier. An equal encounter should beone in which the monsters are the players equals. Then once they figure out how pc's scale as they level, they could suggest about what amount a monster of a certain cr would drain them.

I whole heartedly agree:)

Yes, the three base classes from that book can spend a few minutes refreshing their manoeuvres.
jdarksong

02-07-07, 08:53 AM
Hmm. Doing that to the 'core' classes would substantially up the power level (I would think...) I would think that if all the classes were set up that way it would end up being a little too computer-gamey for me: go into room 1, fight, wait for mana to recharge, go into room 2, rinse, repeat until satisfied.

I guess it just depends on how it is set up. Monsters and bad guys in general would need something comparable to keep them being a challenge, and rarely if ever would you find yourself in a deparate situation. Has it's good and bad points I think. Interesting thoughts.

I always hated the fact that their isn't a rest period to reagain spells and hp after an encounter.

I have a house rule that allows such. If you rest 1 hour, you get a percentage of those things back, usually about 15%. If you rest 2 hrs it goes up 10% , and 10% each hr after that also. Thus if you rest 7 hrs, you get 75% back. This keeps sleeping the best option, while allowing characters to decide on another period of rest if they don't want or need to sleep. I also changed it so 8 hrs. restores 100% hp, though it takes away from "serious injuries", but that is another house rule.:D

It all depends on the dm and how he runs his campaign. The dm should provide more than just that, but if that is how a group likes to play, why not.

And to keep monsters a challenge, make cr=pc's full resources. That would keep them viable.

Not true – WotC designed 3rd edition around a party of 4 characters (Fighter/Cleric/Rogue/Wizard) built with the Elite Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) going up against 4 encounters a day of a CR/EL equal to the party's EL.

Yeah, it is a foreign concept. The ability to keep going would be quite monotanous. I think it could be balanced out by the fact that you don't know if the next challenge could kill you(though that's always a concern). Whereas now mostly you stop because of hp and spells per day.

I think injuries should be something they should try to implement. Maybe if you take half your current hp in damage, you roll a save. If you fail, you are too injured to battle for that encounter and must have bed rest and/or magic to get back past more than half your total hp. That way, you could battle with an injury, but be at a significant disadvantage.

We introduced injuries back in second edition when Combat and Tactics came out. They result mostly from critical hits. Currently in our 3.5 games we use the massive Hackmaster critical hit chart (d10,000) and use fortitude sves to avoid the effect. Fort DC = damage dealt. Makes for some very interesting role playing effects.

02-07-07, 09:21 AM
When 4th Edition comes out WotC will have bought its own lumber company and paper mill and will make character sheets 16 pages long to increase the sale of paper.

The new 16 page character sheets will have room for everything and every new system on it, such as power points, charka binds, mysteries, truename magic, manuvers. Unfortuantly this stuff won't be out for 3 years so the extra pages will go to waste since Wizards of the Coast Technologies will have programed printers to print the full thing regardless of if you only want to print pages 1, 2, 4, and 7.

I just hope that the fire and forget memorization magic user is taken out in 4th edition and the sorcerer gets axed. Those that worked on 3rd ed should have made a further leap with magic instead of giving us an underpowered sorcerer and a wizard that didn't change much with the leap from 2nd to 3rd. The main change for him was the creation feats, with exp. spent as part of creation.

Why they added a caster class for arcane but threw in a monk for the divine is beyond me, and why make the monks lawful? I would think that neutrality would rule for the monk, like a traveling monk.

ok, getting off subject, gonna sign off now.

No, 4th ed is not coming. I would think 3.5 could go on for another 10 years if wizards would be more inteligent with the accesories.

It would be a major change, and I can see it being published side by side with 3.5, naming 4th ed Advanced Dungeon And Dragons.

did I just err?

Beats the endless whining that goes on here dail

You seem to be the only one whining on this thread, the rest of us are actually having a nice time.

Actually I am referring to the Wizards boards in general, not the thread.

ALSO: How you perceive my two posts, one asking are you still talking about 4th edition which is a stale subject and the next complimenting another person's post while pointing out that the wizards boards do see dozens of whiny complaints, as whining is beyond me. Try again, next time use logic...

Try again

Should I, as Steely Dan put it, "Go Back, Jack, Do It Again"?

Wheels turnin' round and round...

Sums up these forums pretty nicely sometimes, no? :P ;)

Somebody apparently zinged me a few days ago. I'm not gonna go digging to quote it. Whoever it was earned a cookie.

Absolutely.

Nice to know there is at least one other person on these boards who digs the Steely.

I liked Manowar's Wheels of Fire. I heard they were switching over to d20, too.

Hmm. I just typed it up elsewhere, so I guess I'll post it here.

Because editions in D&D aren't like editions in Magic.

Magic editions are released to keep certain basic cards in circulation, like shock. D&D editions revise fundemental flaws in the previous edition, and 3rd Edition doesn't have flaws big enough in it to warrent such a fundemental change.

If 4th Edition is ever released, it will be a rehash of 3rd Edition. Thee will be errata. You may see some other changes - new artwork, maybe psionics will be core, maybe the Warlock. New rules maybe become standard. Vancian magic may be replaced, or it may not; to me it seems to work fine.

But there won't be anything *fundementally* different. You old 3E character would be just as playable in "4E," without any grand changes other then eratta. Or if your a Vancian caster, I guess, though again it seems to work fine to me.

The funny thing is, the 4th Ed rumor was started as an April Fools joke, and has taken a life of its own. People just want to believe that its true! As a player that has gone through many editions (1st, 2nd, 3.0, now 3.5), I'm damn glad its only vapor. Hehe.

Well, we all know it will inevitably happen one day.

It's a consequence of my age (31) and upbringing (father who listened almost exclusively to what we now call "classic rock"). Here, have a crate of papaya.

Edit: Yes, I know that isn't Steely Dan. I'm checking to see if you know who it is.

Aja.

Seriously, though, 4th edition? Aren't we gonna have to download each chapter for that into our brains for a flat fee of $5/per?

Nah. They stopped producing those at PS 5, after that the went onto Virtual PSX, with virtual reality.

I don't give a hairy rat's ass about 4th edition or any future edition. I'm not giving WOTC another dime. And if the gaming community at large refused to buy into these "wallet bleeding" schemes, then maybe they would stop.
I doubt it, but maybe.
