Ok no offense but they need to stop this crap. D&D doesn't need to be like the power rangers and have multiple editions that eventually run it into the ground and need to be shot to be put out of its misery before it embarasses itself anymore.

Here is the link: http://www.enworld.org/index.php?page=4e

Go to it and read what it says. It will explain everything.

what do u mean "It doesn't explain anything"? It proves that wizards is planning on coming out with another edition of D&D in the next 2 years.

I'm just afraid that they are going to make the game worse instead of better. Like bringing stupid rules back like "THACO" and the like. And making the game harder to play than what it was like in 3.5. (Which simplified game play 100 fold by letting up on all the stupid unnecessary rules.)
THe last thing I want is for Wizards to ruin ANOTHER good game.

Um, hello? It's spelled 'THAC0', not 'THACO'. Just kidding. God, I hated THAC0.

It really explained nothing. The only people speculating about 4th edition were not people who would be working on it. The only thing that could even remotely be considered "official" are the parts from Sivils and Dancey, yet neither one actually says that 4th edition is right around the corner.

In fact, they both mention that WotC is always working on ways to improve the system in ways that the community wants. What they don't come right out and say is this: "when the number of houserules outnumber the actual rules, we will see a new edition." This is what happened with 1st and then 2nd edition. The houserules to fix problems we pervasive and consistent throughout the community so TSR (then WotC) made the appropriate adjustments. There were so many, new editions were warrented. Technically, this is the same thing that happened with 3.0 to 3.5, they just kept the core mechanic the same so no completely new edition was needed.

Before people keep getting their panties in a bunch over THAC0, it went the way of the dino. It was a good mechanic for the system the way it was set up, but things changed. THAC0 will not work if they keep the idea of higher numbers being better.

Before speculating on what rules will change, don't ask what they will bring back (they probably won't because it's gone for a reason). Ask what POSITIVE changes could we see in a new edition?

That guy takes a giant leap in ... erm... "logic," drawing such conclusions as he has.

When somebody says that something will not exist in 2007, it is not proof or in any way an indication that it will exist in 2008.

For instance, say my mother asked if my wife and I were going to have another child, and I said, "not this year, anyway."

One would not expect my mother to then call every relation we have and tell them that we will be having a child next year.

"Not this year," does not mean "Yes, next year."

It means NOT THIS YEAR. And that's all it means.

This is even more true when you consider that the 2007 date was probably forced into the conversation by the questioner, not the answerer.

This is an old tabloid trick. You ask the guy repeatedly if he intends to do something this year. When he finally gets fed up and says "no, not this year," you then get to imply that he is indicating he will do it next year. Sells papers, doesn't it? Too bad it doesn't have to have any basis in good reporting or truth.

Anyway, my old pal Jace pulled this sort of switcheroo on me all the time, which is one reason why I don't talk to him much anymore.

Yeah 3.5 has some pretty stupid things in it. How do you know it is going to make things worse. It could make things 100% better, like replacing objective alignment /hint. Alignment ALWAYS creates problems since no two people agree 100%, there is always a thread going about it. Be nice to have a system that replaces it that actully makes sense unlike the current system. 3.5 says anything with 2 or less int cant be good or evil but mindless undead are. There are many things that can be changed for the better.

And making the game harder to play than what it was like in 3.5. (Which simplified game play 100 fold by letting up on all the stupid unnecessary rules.)No offense intended, but I have a feeling you're suffering from convenient partial amnesia:
While the 3.5 rules are clearly better organized and complete than those of earlier editions they are not at all any easier!
It's become virtually impossible to play out a fight without using miniatures and some parts of the rules are overly complicated, e.g. grappling is basically a parallel combat rule-set.

Then again, maybe I'm all wrong and I'm the one suffering from partial amnesia ;)

If Wizards even launches 4th edition, the OGL and the different posibilities it make posible all messed up, and its sure that many people still use of the OGL thus winning money and Wizards lose grip (and money) of all this.

Its more logical financially talking to launch 3.6 edition, thus you put more books to sell, and not lose the old gamers.

At least it is what i think about it.

While there is no proof that 4E will come out in '08, those quotes make it sound fairly likely. But why is this such a bad thing? If 3.5 is so much of an improvement over previous editions, isn't it possible that 4E will be better than 3.5? In my opinion, 3.5 is far from perfect. And if 4E isn't better, don't play it.

as much as I don't like some big companies, one thing you can always trust about them is that they will try their very hardest to make lots of money. In this case they want to make a new edition in some unknown time in the future. If they want to earn much money off of it they better make it well made.

Why not, dare I suggest, make 4th edition OGL aswell?

I hardly doubt they'd even want to change the "core mechanic", because people love it so much.

I agree with you 100%

A top-notch 3.6 (:D ) core would be really appreciated by the community.
- With a lot of small fixes on : classes, spells, feats, combat (optional rules for those who play without a grid). Best material from non-core books, psionics is an exemple. The polymorph problem to rewrite, and many others. AT YOU! ;)

My 2 cents that the 4.0 is in fact a 3.6 ! :cheer:

I don't really see the problem. WotC was pretty out in the open with the advent of 3.5 saying that the new edition would still be published about ten years later. That is actually pretty common, as most bigger publishing companies will do a new edition about once a decade, to one change old core rules that they felt are to in use to just up and change in errata, to revitalize their sales loses after the years, and to make slight shifts in the general content and theme of their future products. I mean it kind of had to happen. TSR did it what, like six times or so in 20 years. And the fans loved it till the end. Sure, you gotta buy new material, but not every single thing you already own is going to become instantly useless, or WotC will fail ten times worse than TSR, which was not entirely their own fault.

When it comes to DnD, TSR only made two edition changes. They went from the OD&D to AD&D to 2nd Ed AD&D. For their other systems, yeah some went through a ton of edition changes and the fans still swamped to them for a while. Eventually the fans got tired of trying to keep up and the game faded. DnD goes through a major overhall very slowly compared to other RPGs. That doesn't make it any better, but it does show that the designers are reluctant to simply pump out new editions.

The only certainties in life are Death, Taxes and 4th-Ed.

However, If you're using 3.5 now and are enjoying it, I don't see a problem. When it's released you will have the option of not buying it. You see, as with all new releases, you have the deciding vote on whether to buy it or not.

I'm sure there are many people still using 1st-Ed, 2nd-Ed & 3rd-Ed and still having a great time!

If you take the 3 Core books, add PHB 2, DMG 2, all Complete Books and all say, Forgotten Realms books, you have enough info to role-play D&D for ever and a day!

So many people moan about mistakes in 3.5, but as soon as WotC say something new is coming, people moan about that too!
Let's just wait and see what happens. WotC know it's going to have to be very good or they'll just not sell any new stuff. It's that simple.

On the bright side, if 4th-Ed does bugger up the game then some other company will take over and maybe they wont have the Hasbro money making machine pushing them along. This will probably mean less books but we already have hundreds of them!

Fantasy works in mysterious ways!

"We find them very funny.... WotC does like to hear about what fans want in a new edition as some of the items that are coming out this year are from what fans talked about online a few years ago. When WotC decides to announce the release of a 4th edition we will give trade partners and fans ample time to prepare."

It´s very intelligent from WotC. Do you know the quote ¨the client always is right¨?

Please, be careful with the.......misunderstandings.

I like 3.5, I own damn near every book made by it. When and if anyone converts to 4.0, I'll probably be content to stay in 3.5 given the fact I have invested so much into this game and probably won't explore 1/1000th of the options and modifications I can make to the game now. Thats not to say I don't appreciate the modifications and options, I do. Very much so in fact.

If you can write a better game, have at it and submit rules to a publisher. Otherwise, ya got no reason to whine.

Well, with the amount of 'stuff' coming out right now I doubt it will be within the next 2 years.

Even so, just because there is a new edition doesnt mean you HAVE to play the new edition, there are plenty of old timers who are still quite content with 1st and 2nd ed.

For some examples HERO is in its Revised 5th edition, GURPS is in its 4th, Shadowrun is in its 4th as well, Marvel has had at least 3 supers games, Mutants and Masterminds is already in its second. So yeah, as the oldest RPG system family out there having only 5 editions is pretty good.

Just a question here, even if they brought out a 4th edition, coulf you not continue playing 3.5, 3rd, etc....? Just because they bring it out, does not mean you need to play it.

You can't go by previous editions. You have to go with the market. Currently, there is a glut of material on the market. something needs to be done to shake things up and allow a new market cycle of new material.

I'd even go so far as to suggest you watch the Winter Fantasy conventions over the next three years. My guess is, based upon everything WoTC has been doing, that Winter Fantasy will be where they will announce the upcoming new edition one year out. It's already too late for a Gen Con announcement, and WoTC has been de-emphasizing Gen Con of late. This means anything happening in late 2007 is extremely unlikely.

If we are to see a 4E in 2008, most likely you'll hear an announcement at Winter Fantasy 2007. I'd say the odds of that are fairly small because there would be a lot of hints of something big coming at Winter Fantasy 2007. A Gen Con 2007 announcement would put the release in late 2008. That would be what I would consider optimal based upon current market saturation levels, but is not as likely as a Winter Fantasy announcement, IMO.

Taking those things into consideration, Winter Fantasy 2008 may be the most likely announcement time. That would put a release in early 2009,

A 2011 release is way out of line with the current market glut. something needs to be done in order to refresh sales.

RPG sales overall throughout the market are down.

That said, a publically traded corporation demands more than just good sales and profits. Growth and meeting set goals are what matters. In order to provide sales growth in the D&D line, a shake up will become necessary

That checks with everything I've been seeing for two years now (despite what some "Wizards" officials have been saying) and brought up occasionally on the forums...not that anyone wants to really hear or believe anything like that.
