This rumor pops up about every week and a half.

There is still no evidence of it, and WotC has 3.5 books planned well into the future.

While there is no doubt in my mind that Wizards will eventually release another version of D&D (they might call it 4th edition... they might not), I don't foresee it happening any time soon.

4th edition is a rumor. It pops up far too often. I would that every man, woman, and child on this board learn that 4th edition threads are not necessary. THERE'S NO UPCOMING FOURTH EDITION!

Because rumors of 4th edition have sustained a chain reaction in which each post claiming or asking about the release of 4th Edition generates two more post which each will generate two and so on. Ladies and Gentlemen, 4th Edition has achieved Nuclear Fission.

Edit: It has been brought to my attention that due to my lack of understanding of nuclear physics that I have confused Fusion with the Spliting of Atoms. The error has been corrected. I repeat, WotC is not using 4th Edition in the production of Hydrogen Bombs.

Well, there may have been a plan to announce it recently and release it in a year or two, but hostile reaction to a mere rumor would have quickly quelled anything even remotely dealing with that, in fact if there was anything it was quickly denied.

:)

However I suspect that rumor that abounded a few weeks ago is responsible for some of the more recent threads popping up still.

I'd just like to add that in Zherog's GenCon thread (which apparently seems gone now :( ) he mentioned that WotC said some things about 4e.

But as I suspected it was just the normal blah in form of "... 4th edition is unevitable ... in some time ... at least anounced one year before released ... ".

So, there's no need to crap your pants. :P

Although, thinking about what I've read about Faiths of Eberron in the CO board thread... man, I wished 3e would just die. :nonono:

I don´t believe in that boring rumor but I wonder why we haven´t news about the D&D titles from May 2007, or we are unaware of the publishing date of the next d20 Modern soucerbook....(perhaps d20 Spectaculars?).

I rebember in the last days of AD&D 2nd Ed. some spell compendiums (priest, wizards) were published... and too the magic ecyclopedia (someone like magic item compendiums...). Devir, the publishing factory to Spanish language... has started to stop the rythm of publications, or it reject translaty certains soucerbooks...I rembeber Martinez Roca, the last publishig factory of AD&D in Spain stop radicaly the publications some time before the news about a 3rd Ed. I´m not sure, but I don´t think anyone were going to surprise me.

Perhpas we only have to wait until..... January 2007, for example, to know the future soucerbooks from 2007 Spring..

Even when 4th edition is a reality, it may well be compatible with 3.5 in the same way that 3.5 is compatible with 3.0, so I wouldn't worry too much about my books becoming obsolete until we know that 4th edition is coming out and that it will be so different from 3.X that everything that has come before will not be easily adaptable.
Even if someone makes a thread about "What would you like in 4th edition" or somesuch it seems to create a new "4th edition is coming!" thread. Don't give it any thought unless it is official. Not "I know someone and they say...", but official.

What do you mean? 3.5 IS 4th edition...they just renamed it to make it seem less harsh.

Ouch. Sorry to hear that. :( That was some bad thing, I hope things will work out better for you in the future. I also know that women only cause problems, therefore I'm very glad that I'm single (and hope to stay that till my last moment on this damn planet; but that's another story ;) ).

Maby because I have only come back to the boards in the last week?
Hey, welcome back! :D

I was not trying to cause you problems, just asking a question.
No problem -- at least with me. It's just that like threads about

Search
the orb of X spells
stupid DMs who put paladins in loose/loose situations

this topic comes up very regularily.

And as mentioned, WotC is considering a 4e. It is just not about yet. If someone has Zherog's thread about GenCon bookmarked... there he said a little about that topic.

I personally would rather like 4e. It was the perfect opportunity for WotC to get things done right like

ditch Vancian spellcasting in favor of weaving (as seen in the WoT rpg)
redo arcane spellfailure (either replace it with another mechanic or apply it to all casters)
nerf, Nerf, NERF, NERF the ridiculously overpowered divine classes (I just say favored soul vs sorcerer, or druid/cleric vs everyone else  )
make psionics core
bring spells down to a more reasonable level (gate, anyone?)
redo the game mechanic (although d20 is basically a good system, there is much way for improvement)

That is just a small amount of what I'd like to see with 4e.

I bloody hope that is not the case. If 4e is fully compatible with 3e there will be some head-rolling revolution on the boards. If a new edition comes around, I want to see some substantial improvements in mechanics and gameplay (like doing away with that rediculous measuring every distance in "squares").

If I compared Shadowrun 4e to any previous edition, I must say that WizKids has made some impressive and very good changes to the system (such as in: now for the first time an elf with a high dexterity can shoot better than an orc with a low dexterity when both have the same firearms skill rating). Although that makes SR4e absolutely incompatible with any previous edition crunch-wise... But seriously, DnD3e did the same to AD&D, so... *shrug*

I hope WotC would do the same.

It's not a sick joke so much as pointless, irrational preoccupation. There are simply too many people who are not satisfied unless they can weep and wail that the END OF D&D is just around the corner.

Ignore any and all 4E discussions until you see HARD PROOF. You'll live a much happier life.

I know they've been pumping out material more quickly than before, but keep in mind: there was about 11 years between 2E and 3E, and a pretty good amount of time between AD&D and 2E.

The jump from 3.0 to 3.5 was a bit annoying (it seems like they could have done a better job editing and revising the books in the first place), but I don't see a 4E for quite a while (5 years + ?). And even if they did pump out a 4E in 5 years, it would still have about a decade between it and 3.0.

And even if they do pump out a 4E, you don't have to buy new books (although it is tempting). The old ones work just fine, if that's the game you want to play.

There seems to be a good decade between systems. 1st Edition AD&D was the late '70s and early '80s. 2nd was the very late '80s and the '90s. 3rd didn't appear until '99.

So we should expect it in 2010 with the announcment at the previous GenCon (so summer '09). That's if they space it out from the start of 3E. They might very well decide to go from the start of 3.5 to avoid the sting of another quick change (albiet twice as long as the shift between 3.0 and 3.5).
This would put the release at 2013. A mere seven years away but which still feels all sci-fi and far future like all 201X dates for this old man...

Seven more years of these frakking posts on a bi-weekly basis... That's over $9 in nickels!

Once sales lag the pressure will be on to release 4e and give sales a nice healthy boost. WOTC is a business and they need to make $. There is nothing wrong with this and I look forward to 4e. I love DnD but the system needs an overhall. After level 10 things tend to break down thanks in main to the spellcasters > everything else.

My money is on an announcement in early to mid 2007. I look forward to the new edition. Should be good :)

Good point on the Saga system Baby Samurai. It should preview some ideas on combat and maybe the skills system. Still I think the real work needs to be done with spells and spell casters in DnD. Maybe the jedi powers could give us some clues?

I really want them to make Skills less clunky.

Not the way they are used, but the way they are chosen/allocated.

We're all fooling ourselves. (Well, except baby samurai, who is using 7th edition.) 4ed is already upon us. ToB was really the indicator. There are so many magic systems already out there, and now warrior types can actually contribute more effectively. 4th is already here.

Or.

They'll never release a 4th edition. That's because they know full well that about 2 weeks after that, the boards will have threads popping up every 10-14 days about 5th edition. And of course someone will think themselves clever by replacing the '5' with a '$'.

Cheers

Otto :)

I agree. And about the date... I´m not sure. Rebember in this time whole products are constantly updated. But I would rather a good work that having it soon.

I think de future updated d20 is being designed not only for us, but to the adaptation to videogames... Do you rebember the videogame Baldruc Gate in the last days of AD&D? And now it is Neverwinter Nights 2, D&D:Stormereach, Dragonshard, D&D: heroes....

Will we seen a ¨reboot¨ of old campaing settings like Ravenloft, Mystara, Spelljammer or Darksun?

That would put the release of 4E only 5 years after 3.5 and 8 after 3.0. Fans will not tolerating having to buy that many books again, so soon.
WotC lost a huge chunk of the market share with 3.5 and the flock of fans to White Wolf and other settings (or leaving the hobbey altogether) and so many people I talk to still play 3.0 or 2E. If 4E comes out then very few people will make the change and will buy no new books and Wizards will lose money.

You compare this to the end of 2E forgetting that things are very different in publishing now. A couple books get released every month so they're going through the easy topics more quickly.
And we still haven't see the 'black border' reprint, like in 2E before the Player's Options series came out. WotC can still make a mint reprinting and revising 3.5 (ver 3.5.5) and releasing the Core books again with full errata, updated rules (swift and immediate actions), updated monster statblocks, new art, new production values, etc.
And since we already know most of the books coming out for '07, the earliest that will be done will be late '07 or, more likely, '08, thus keeping 3.5 alive for a few more years

I disagree. WOTC could release 4e tomorrow and they would make a mint.
They didn't lose a chunk of the market, the market grew substantially enough for everyone to get bigger pieces of the pie.

Many people leave the hobby. Many will return because of a 4e release.

The rumor is annoying, and the topic played to death. But I wonder why so many people think it's a mystery that the rumor keeps popping up.

It's no mystery. The 3.0-to-3.5 upgrade scarred people.

Look, a lot of people plopped down hundreds of dollars on 3.0, only to find it useless a year later. D&D is strangely competitive, and the need to stay current is a pressure greater than the greatest peer-influenced bong hit could ever be.

In this case, staying current meant plopping down even more money than the first time. Gas tanks went empty, credit cards got maxxed, kids went hungry.

As far as I'm concerned, this is what Wizards not only asked for, but begged for. You and I, and the other forum posters who get bored with the topic have a right to, but Wizards deserves every dumb 4th Edition querie that can be shoved down their collective gullet.

People tend to expect the worst in the first place. But D&D players are simply shell-shocked from their experience. It's just Post-Update Stress Disorder.

PUSD. I'm PUSD. Aren't you?

BS.
Stock dropped and there were numerous Wall Street reports of how WotC's market share dropped while most other company's rose slightly. 2003 was not a good year for WotC or the gaming industry as a whole.
In fact, it was a pretty disastrous year. People stopped buying many 3.0 books for fear they were obsolete and many licensed and d20 publishers went under. Books didn’t sell well, even for WotC. Why buy any of the new releases (or books from last year that you were holding back on) if they’re only going to be obsolete and need heavy revision in two months?
It was a crash!
A couple years later WotC recovered its market share. Probably because so many companies went under that there was less competition…

There are people who are still just getting into 3.5. There are no less than two new threads at this very moment from people asking basic advice after just getting back into the game. People are still going to keep coming back and coming in regardless of a new edition. A quick release to 4E might scare off people who were thinking of coming back (for a few years) and drive away many more current players.
At this moment it would do more harm than good.

Actually, Hasbro started 2003 (http://money.cnn.com/quote/quote.html?pg=qu&sid=2340&symb=HAS&time=5yr&uf=0)in a rut and ended the year on quite a high note, and a high that they are hitting again after a two year slight doldrum.

What does that have to do with D&D?
WotC is a drop in the bucket of Hasbro, a very, very small niche. And stocks were just as low for the release of 3.0 and it's entire publishing history. I doubt that 3.5 single-handedly lifted the entire company out of the hole caused by 3.0...

…Of course it’s smaller, faster and cheaper.

I was under the impression that Sword World still was only really used with Second edition, or "The Complete Edition" which didn't come out till the 90s anyways.

What is Sword World?

Do you mean 2nd edition AD&D?

And that supports your statement that WotC's stock prices (Which don't exist) did bad in 2003 how? I believe this may be a case of switching the goalposts.

Where did I mention stock prices? At all?

No, I mean sword world.

There are some that say Lodoss war was based off of AD&D, which in part it was, but there was another RPG, which is where lodoss and the Crystania campaigns use and occur, called sword world. Basically AD&D, but with vast differences. It is a 2d6 system for starters.

The books are basically records of the actual campaigns that took place in the game/world with an actual party if I recall correctly, and are still ongoing. Then someone got the bright idea to try to adapt the books (which were based on the game and gameworld) to an OAV and there you go...Record of Lodoss War series.

If I understand it all correctly. Problem with Sword World is that I think it's a Japanese Only system, meaning everything for it and on it is actually only in...get this...Japanese.

I'm not a player of the system though...

But I am a Lodoss War fan as well as a Crystania fan.

Nah, I think we figured out that it's really 7th.

1e D&D
1e AD&D
OD&D
2e AD&D
2e AD&D Player's Option
3.0
3.5

Yeah, 7th. 8th if you count pre-1e Eldritch Wizardry.

What's the difference between 1e D&D and OD&D? The Rules Cyclopedia is just all the 1e D&D sets combined, and they aren't much different from Greyhaw/kBlackmoor/Eldritch Wizardry.

But I guess it's ephemeral since the edition numbering is now more confusing than Final Fantasy's. I agree, though - 3.5 is actually 8th edition.

I suspect that 3.5 is to 3e as Player's Option is to 2e. If that is the case, then 4e should be expected around 2009-2010.

The point is what was your reaction between clicking the link and before the page loaded...

And yes I had to do it. I've been wanting to do it for a long time. I missed the chance last april and I'm warming up for next april.

There's always this link too...

:ahem:

Huh...

There's probably more similiarities between 1e and 2e than there was between the Rules Cyclopedia and the orginal D&D even with Greyhawk/Blackmoor/and Eldritch Wizardry tossed, in.

To vast to really not in this thread without making it a full blown report.

That's the joke. People kept saying that 3.5 was 4th edition, so a few people got annoyed and resulted in that, to show how stupid that claim was, as there had been much larger changes before that did not result in a new edition.
