But Neely, this is very much the right forum to discuss this, and it's part of what a thorough book on Realms magic would address. I.e., not a catalogue of spells, but discussion of what it's like to craft and cast and fine tune them, work with the Weave, how mages think about principles of Art, how enchantments interact, etc. etc. -- all bubbling below the surface and occasionally addressed outright in places like VGATM.

06-09-07, 02:41 PM I believe it will debut with the new D&D Subscriber Website that will have "pay for content". The amount of 3.x info will be too much to input into the site, test play through the generators, etc. Considering some of the lofty ideas like character generation and all the other generators such as the ones Code Monkey was working on, it only makes sense to start with 3 new 4.0 books and a website that has already worked out all the kinks in being compatible. In a sense, everything would have to be run backwards and forwards through the internet generators before it is even released in hard copy. CD keys within the books would unlock them to the generators. This is all my assumptions of course, but it follows a logic have been ranting about for years.

However, that would require one of two actions from WotC.

1. A complete and utter invalidation of the products they're releasing for the rest of this year (assuming the Digital Initiative is announced at Gen Con).

or

2. Holding the official, big announcement on the Digital Initiative until this December, and then try to coax people into buying the new edition either during, or immediately after the big Holiday season (which would be suicide if done that way, IMHO).

As I don't see them doing either, I don't think we'll be seeing 4E for at least another year.

And even then, if it isn't blatantly superior to 3E/3.5, only those people obsessed with keeping up with the Jones'/having the latest whatever, will bother to buy into it, given the relative versatility of the current rules, and how little extra rules are actually needed to have a good game.

I just bought most of the 3.5e books lol (only ones I haven't got are complete champion and the 9 swords one, so I spent lots of ŁŁŁŁ on them)and I don't think that I could be bothered to fork out another ton load of cash to buy the next load of books.
