Okay, a new guy just joined our group and sent me his character sheet. He has a base of +3 for his fort save. He is an elven wizard. He has taken the vow of abstience and sacred vow but I don't have the books in front of me to double check if this is what gives him that base fort save??

Any help would be great.

p.s. he has no other feats that would help with this and only a +1 con modifier.

Well, the base Fort (with no modifiers added in) for a 4th level wizard is +1. The obvious modifier is his Con mod. Are you refering to his base Fort or his total modified Fort?

As for the vow, I don't rememeber offhand. I almost never use them, so I don't remember their effects. I'm thinking (and this is a guess :P) that the Vow of Abstinence (giving up alcohol, IIRC) give you a bonus against poisons or something like that. If it does boost your Fort, it's only for some specific situations, and is not a blanket bonus that applies to all Fort saves.

...I'll have to look that one up. ;)

It's just his BASE fort, he has a total modifier of +5, and he has no notes on whether it's +5 vs some things and not others.

Just a general tip: Don't let your players use rules from books you don't have/haven't read.

I have the book, I've read it cover to cover, which I do with all my books when I first get them (lame, yes but I enjoy it). I just don't have them in front of me to reference.

I'm hoping he's just adding in a bonus vs something else (like poison) but I'm not sure.

:D For once we are in total agreement. :D

Vow of Abstinence is +4 Fort against poisons and drugs. It looks as if your player has made an error somewhere :)

Not necessarily. The rat familiar (which I always take as a wizard), grants a +2 to fort saves. But really -- you should just ask your player how he or she arrived at the +5, breaking down the bonus at each step.

While a well built 4th level mage could conceivably squeak out a +10 fortitude save (Base 1, Rat familiar +2, Great Fort +2, 18 Con +4, Cloak of Resistance +1) or maybe even higher with other feats, thats not the issue that I see in the OP.

There is no way a non-houserules or variant wizard has a BASE fort save of +4. There are no feats, class abilities, or otherwise that add to or alter BASE saves. That's why they are "base"; everything builds off of them, up or down.

Assuming you want to get techincal, ala Unearthed Arcana's handy fraction chart, he has a base fort save of +1 and 1/3.

Hope this helps in some way.
