Not counting the DMG classes or the 3.0 Shaman and Sohei. Counting the UA generic classes and the Erudite. It just boggles the mind that there are so many classes out there, and that they're not done yet. Keep this up and we'll have no need for prestige classes ;)

We needed prestige classes?
Touché

One of the reasons for the many core classes recently is that many people prefer to be able to play their character or strategies, etc. before 6th level or so.

I can certainly stand behind this, as most of my campaigns are low level and it can get a bit repetitive with the classes then.

Look at it this way, before they qualify for their PrCs, a rogue playing a spy, a rogue playing a thief and a rogue playing an assassin are all pretty much the same in game mechanics. Yes, they can roleplay differently and have slightly different skill alocations, but in the end they do pretty much the same thing in combat.

To add to that, many times the core classes require a certain method of playing or strategy to be effective. So if the choices you make for later are not very effective until then, you might find low levels a struggle.

So a solution? make classes playable from day 1

It's too bad they couldn't just come out with some sort of classless based d20 system that allows you to choose class features, hitdye type, BAB and saves as you advance... like a point system. Pretty much glomp all of the class features, feats, and class-based abilities into a series of chains.

there is something like that in UA. though it does not really grant all the class abilities.

Many have tried to make systems like this, but there just becomes too much stuff to calaculate and too many balance issues arise as well

That may be true, but I am sure it would still be less complex than balancing 53+ classes...
What is UA?

Unearthed Arcana. The Generic character system allows you select class features in place of bonus feats.

trying to balance 53+ classes? you don't try to balance them all at once, and ultimately game balance is up to the DM, so as lame as some people may perceive it, if (s)he says "no dread necromancer" that means no dread necromancer.
one last note, game balance isn't really that important in a TEAM game, which DnD usually is, now if you mean the balance between char power and the DM's monsters, there is always a way to make things a real challenge...so "game balance" isn't that important.
if any thinks otherwise please post, i'd like to see what others think.

I agree somewhat, but it'd be nice to think all PCs were created equal. Even if you're helping each other out, it's nice to be able to contribute as much as everybody else.

Personally I wouldn't really call classes from outside the PHB "base classes," but that's just me I suppose. IMHO the base classes are the standard PHB classes. The other classes presented in assorted supplements I consider "optional classes." I prefer PrC's myself since the players actually have to work for the abilities rather than being handed instant gratification, but that is the trend of our modern era in many facets of life so I'd imagine I'm in the minority on that.

I don't think the UA Generic classes can be counted as normal base classes. The system only works if you remove the rest of the classes, as the point is to simplify the issue of too many classes and other options.

:twocents:Eh, I'd call the PHB classes "core" and the others "base". Also, instant gratification makes it seem like they're getting uber for nothing. They still have to work up to what they want. None of the base classes give them a prestige class type ability. It's just shuffling and redesigning the regular abilities.

I like the variety available. Sure, I'll probably never play them all in my life time, but it's nice to know that I could :P

An example of why I think the variety is a good thing: Paladin vs. Knight. In a lot of respects they are the same class... at least in the fact that if you saw them riding up to meet you, you might not immediatly know the difference. They are both honor-bound fighters in heavy armor who serve a greater ideal. Personally, I prefer the Knight. I like their taunt-like abilities and the shield buffs. Also, I never really wanted to play a Paladin, because I'm not that into fighters with magic or having to have the prerequisite: Deusche Bag to qualify for the class (okay.. so that's completely opinion.. but as far as I'm concerned completely true.)

Sure... Hexblade and Duskblade are a lot a like. Do we really need Ninja, Scout, and Rogue? Why not? It's fun. Saves players the trouble of multiclassing Rogue and Ranger to get a sneaky forest-type when they can play a Scout.

The past smattering of book releases still gets a thumbs up from me. Sure, there were some misses (Healer comes to mind), but overall makes for a more fun game with more options and more individuality... especially in large gaming groups.

okay.. I'm done.

Sigh, in this mass glut of 20th level classes you're bound to miss a couple...

Dragonlance Campaign Setting (Mystic, Noble)

I'm not going for third party stuff (there are two other base classes in Dragonlance), but those were printed first party.

I like to consider PHB classes primary and preferred classes and use the whole expaded list in PHB II as normal classes. Anything else is strictly DM permission. Not that I DM any more than I have to, but also the rest of the group.

Oh, and the Oriental Adventures classes, though those are 3.0.

Was Psionic Artificer a substitution type deal ("Instead of Craft Wand, you get Craft Dorje!"), or was it it's own class? As for the 3.0 classes, yeah, I'm trying to stick with what's playable in the present.

I agree, thought I like some ¨optional¨ class of UA like the battle socerer or the paladins of freedom, tiranny and slaughter..

With 52 basic class...Tehn does it mean perhpas a basic class compendium can be published in the future? ;)

And I like the others basic class, because is too boring always the same ¨barbarian half-orc¨, ¨rogue hafling¨ or ¨bard gnome¨. Why not a hexblade drow, a swashbuckler gobling, a ninja hobgobling, a favored soul aasimar, a spellthief tiefling, a scout gnoll, a shugenja genasi, or a warlokc kobold? I like the variety!!!

The trouble is.... can it start to be many much in a near future?

3.0 classes are playable at present.

If a 3.0 class has not been updated, than it’s still suitable for a 3.5 game.

Ninja of the Crescent moon is certainly Very playable- but I don't think that class is suitable for anyones campaign.

Too many classes.
*Shrugs* Your fellow D&D gamers here wanted more base classes because there too many prestige classes, all because they don't want to formulate a short-term goal to gain that prestige class.

And then there is the semantic definition over the definition of "prrrrestige." *cue fancy violin music*

My own list;

¨General¨ Campagins:
Player's Handbook (Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Wizard)
Player's Handbook II (Beguiler, Dragon Shaman, Duskblade, Knight)
Complete Adventurer (Ninja, Scout, Spellthief)
Complete Arcane (Warlock, Warmage, Wu Jen)
complete Divine (Favored Soul, Shugenja, Spirit Shaman)
Complete Warrior (Hexblade, Samurai, Swashbuckler)
Dragon Magic (Dragonfire Adept)
Heroes of Horror (Archivist, Dread Necromancer)
Miniatures Handbook (Healer, Marshal) (but almost nobody chooses it for PC)
Oriental Adventures (¨Oriental¨ Shaman, Sohei)
30 basic class

optional campagins (new ¨power¨ system):
Expanded Psionics Handbook (Psion, Psychic Warrior, Soulknife, Wilder)
Complete Psionic (Ardent, Divine Mind,Lurk) Erudite out of my list.
Magic of Incarnum (Incarnate, Soulborn, Totemist)
Tome of Battle (Crusader, Swordsage, Warblade)
Tome of Magic (Binder, Shadowcaster, Truenamer)
7+3+3+3 = 16

for some fixed campaigns:
Eberron Campaign Setting (Artificer) Isn´t it a nPC class?
Dragonlance Campaign Setting (Mystic, Noble)
= 3

Out of my list:
Dungeon Master's Guide (Adept, Aristocrat, Commoner, Expert, Warrior)
Unearthed Arcana (Expert, Spellcaster, Warrior)

Perhpas Adept, Aristocrat and Expert if they were designed specifically for PCs. I wonder if it would be viable the commoner like PC class if it have a aditional (no-offensive, to avoid the power gamers) feat in each level

Total 30 +16. (and perhaps... in some cases +3).

The trouble is creating a basic class with a interesting background....

But don´t worry. This is... like a democracy. WotC will publish whole that what was bought by us. When you buy is similar to a vote.

Yes, but their surely must be at least three times as many prestige classes...
