I know we need a starter book but what else would you think would be good to start with? Book wise and all.

Until you have a Player's Handbook and have read through it, and are already playing in a game, you really need nothing more than a set of dice, paper and a pencil.

If you do not have a gaming group, then you need one of those too. If you and your friends are starting up cold, then you also need a Dungeon Master's Guide and a Monster Manual.

That's it.

Firstly welcome to the pit of madness we call D&D (and this forum)
You need either a starter set, or the three core books: the dungeon masters guide (DMG), the players handbook (PHB) and the monster manual (MM), althoguh you will eventually want to get the three core books, the starter set is meant to give you all the basics you need to start a game.

Nothing else is needed, everything else is purely a matter of adding more to your game. Some people refuse to use anything other than the core book, others will use anything to hand. If your one of the latter, the expanded psionic handbook is regarded as being practically the fourth core book (the bold wording was important, the psionics handbook is out of date, and thought of as messed up), and the complete series gives an expansion on some each of the general areas of characters (warrior, arcane, divine and adventurer), although the complete warrior is regarded as the best of the 4.

Hope this stuff helps...
