I noticed a thread called “A 20th level wizard vs. 10,000 goblins” recently, and I was wondering what would happen if a fighter took on 10,000 of the little green guys.

The situation is as follows:

1. Both sides are aware of the other’s approach about three days in advance.
2. Nether side can call upon further allies (aside from things like summon monster).
3. All goblins are 1st level warriors aside from their leader who is a 3rd level aristocrat.

Who do you think would win?

The fighter, using the following strategy:

-Build AC into the 26-ish range. Don't need any more against goblins since it won't help. Get +3 full plate, a ring of protection +1, an amulet of natural armor +1, dex bonus of at least +1, and the appropriate ioun stone. Cheap stuff for 20th level
-Stock up on necklaces of fireball
-Stock up on potions of protection from arrows
-Stock up on healing potions
-Get onto a flying carpet or flying mount, staying at very high altitude
-"Bombs away!"
-Use a potion of protection from arrows
-Use the carpet or mount to maintain higher ground advantage and hack away with whirlwind attacks and/or great cleave.
-Heal at regular intervals
-Boast at a local inn about your glorious victory over 10,000 goblins.

If you've got some really dumb goblins or an unimaginative DM, maybe that would work.

If the goblins have 3 days to prepare for this high level character to approach, they're going to have time to build some basic fortifications, and that will force the Fighter to come down and play after a while. He can drop all the alchemist fire he wants on the ground below, while the goblins are relatively safe in shallow tunnels, firing arrows at the Fighter's mount (assuming a flying creature rather than a carpet). Enterprising goblins might also have time to construct ballistae or catapults even, and Pro. Arrows doesn't stop a ballista bolt.

Also, with the numbers of the goblins, they'll be using Aid Another to help each other hit the Fighter. And Overrun, Grapple, Trip, and other attacks to keep the Fighter off balance. Nets would be a wise suggestion, as well.

Lots of goblins are going to die, but once they get the Fighter on the ground (and if the Fighter wants to win before he runs out of protection from arrows potions, he's gonna have to) the goblins can use their numbers to their advantage.

So the Fighter will need to prepare for both aerial and ground combat if he really wants to destroy the goblins. The Fighter might be able to do it, but with close meleers making one attack Aided by others, a few second rank meleers with reach weapons and others Aiding them, and third rankers with whips and nets (and the guys with whips readying actions to disarm/sunder potions the Fighter draws), and several thousand guys behind them, the Fighter will be in trouble.

There was a huge thread on here about this last week. Must have been deleted because of flames?

I like using the swarm rule where since there's so many that melee damage is useless.

In the real world this guy would be killed in a matter of seconds due to the amount of attacks hitting him from all sides and getting bumb-rushed to the ground, pinned and speared to death.

But in D&D...

wouldnt it be funny if the fighter had flamecasters bolt, from weapons of legacy? (he could launch a fireball once per turn, as a 7th lvl wizard

As DM, I'd arm my Goblins with shortbows at least, maybe crossbows for better range, but for the sake of argument for now, shortbows.

If the fighter gets within the max range increment of the goblins, they all open fire. They will need a 20 to hit anyways (and a 20 always hits, right?), so they light the guy up from max range.

Going with just the law of averages, 10,000 goblins x 5% chance to hit = 500 bow hits. 500 bow hits x average damage from a d6, heck, lets say they are small bows (3.5 edition) = d4 for 2.5 pts average damage. Gee, our hero just ate 1250 pts of damage, minus 100 for that Potion of Protection from Arrows (max protection 100 pts). Heck, lets be generous and put a Stoneskin on him too (max protection 150 pts) and Mr. Fighter still takes 1000 pts of damage. And that doesn't account for the 1 in 20 hits that actually end up being x3 critical hits either.

Obviously it can be argued Mr.Fighter can square off with the goblins in lots of different ways, but head to head vs 10,000? Suicide, pure and simple, if he gets too close to them.

That would be my take on it.

Remember though, it's unlikely that all the goblins can be in range at the same time. Basically what you're saying is that every goblin is in about the same spot. If you have a big field of goblins no matter where the Fighter is there are going to be goblins who are too far away to do anything useful. It's really all a matter of how long the fighter can stay in the air. If he's in the air at an altitude that is max range for a crossbow then only the goblins directly below are actually in range.

Would the Fighter be able to win? I don't know, it's a tough question to answer. It all depends on a lot of things. Could he do it?

The 1250 point damage exapmle ahows up two problems, one a 5% always hit chance. But for the fighter more significant problem is the 5% always miss chance. A mage has no such worry with a fireball etc. I think the fighter would be pretty cheesed if he did come down to ground level and every 20th attack miraculousy missed. Any of his attacks should be automtic successes(4th attack BAB +5, mel wep +5, 21 str +5=+15) against a goblin AC 15 QED. As for the let the arrowing begin there are so many ways around it infact the fighter should not have to face any ranged combat at all(barring the goblins unloading archery into combat, boots of teleportation DMG 250, cloak of etheralness DMG 253) the other chestnut to negate your mass destruction archery attack is plate mail of invulnerability(DMG 218) giving DR 5 so all but the crits are worthless, or armor of etheralness (DMG 218) again to get in to melee. Etc....

So bearing this in mind here is an outline of how I would build.
-as Kilate said Ac in the 26 ish range with Invulnerability, +5 Full plate of Invulnerability(+8 for cost) Amulet of Natural Armour +3 (64K gp armor+18k gp in amulet) : 82k gp
-Orb of Storms DMG 263 :48k gp
-Boots of Teleportation : 40k gp
-Stone Salve DMG 267 :4k gp
-Ring of Freedom of Movement DMG 232 : 40k gp
-Ring of Regeneration DMG 233 :90k
-Any combo of ridiculous weaponry depending on fighting style: 2x+7:196kgp
-Potion of Undetectable Alignment: 300 gp

total 500 300 gp. Plenty to spare.

So how you want to fight I'm not sure but i figure two weapon and cleave or single weapon using whirlwind & a dancing weapon whatever is your fancy. I figure about 13 attacks every 2 rounds without getting into deep thinking on permutations(conservative estimate figuring on whirlwind 8 dead goblins 5 ft step five dead gobs or whatever combo with two weapon proficiencies), 5% miss means 12.35 'live attack rolls' e.g not 1's. With AC 15 all four attacks are easily made instant hits barring aforementioned 1's. With Str and Magic doing in the region of 8 to 12 damage before rolling the weapon damage dice, I assume I'm good for 12 gobs every 2 rounds. Thus 12 deaths in 2 rounds x 5 = 60 gobs a minute x 60 minutes = 3600 goblins an hour after rounding.

How you build you fighter I dont care spend a skill point on Learning Goblin.

So this is how it goes.
Preparation
Summon a big storm with orb of winds.
Wait for storm, put nuttella on pop tarts for that sugary quick energy he's gonna need soon.
Apply Stone Salve; now protected by stone skin.

Storm arrives he's got 4d12 hours of storms=no freaking missile weapons.

Press Play on my gnome built Kenderphonic stereo, cue Metallica Ride the Lightning (or other cheesey title that ties in to orb of storms) Drink potion of undetectable alignment.

March over the Hill, Teleport in close.

Begin slaughtering, now I figure 1 in 20(5%) hits th fighter, but is absorbed by the DR 5 except for the damge rolls opf six. On top of this 1 in 20(5%) is also a crit at x2. The math is laid out below first the crits then the regular damage.
-10000 attacks x 5%= 500 hits.
5% critical: 500 x 5%= 20 x ((3.5 dam x 2 crit multiplier)-DR5) = 40 damage from crits
- regular attacks that roll a six, 500 hits minus 20 crits=480. 480 x 1/6(chance of rolling a six on damage)= 80. Each 6 does one damage, 6 damage minus DR5 is one damge. So 80 damge from there as well.
80+40= 120 damge.
So he's got like 30 left in stone skin right??? Oh and he can regenerate? Scare him a little, go on.

Begin insulting them in their own language, worth that skill point. Laugh at their confusion as the wonder whether I am evil or good. Find the aricstocrat and skin him for the door mat to the house. At 3600 gobs an hour the fighters gonna nuke em in 3 hours, well inside the worst case scenario for the orb of storms.

The Ring of freedom of movement means that the fighter will not be grappled to the ground and stabbed. If for some unbelievable reason he did get pinned he'd use my boots of teleport to reset.

There is plenty of gold left over to solve any other problem, He is unhurt from my math, and please note all rounding was done in the goblins favour. His only annoyance is having to trudge home all wet and muddy for a minimum of an hour before this storm buggers off.

Any questions.....

If he uses the Mantle of Faith (DR 5/evil) and Heavy Fortification Armor(nullifies all crits and sneak attacks), he cannot be hurt by the arrows no matter how many are shot at him.

Haven't noticed those items. I was just banging out gear I kinda knew, but yeah even more ammo in the old "you can't touch me cannon"!

There are ways to get bigger DR's that the goblins couldn't bypass in any scenario, either in more expensive items or templates (unless the goblins sold all their useless gear to get some magic items and left a large number of themselves unarmed, which lets them damage the fighter a few times until he sunders all the weapons). So give him DR, ring of freedom of movement, a maxed out weapon, whirlwind, combat brute, and maybe if we're allowing PrC's here get him supreme cleave....he'd slay somewhere around 16 or more goblins a round. So assuming that (which is stastitically lower) he would kill 160 goblins a minute, or 9600 goblins an hour, and he'd never take a hit, or take a few meaningless ones until he broke the pitiful magic weapons that threatened him.

Throw in a ring of regeneration for kicks. That is a bloody pile of goblins.

And i mean, the fighter would know exactly what he was up against. The goblins wouldn't be smart enough to get the magic items needed or trade up to alchemist fire to bypass DR (since they're all low level). The goblins would have to resort to throwing giant boulders at a single small target (very hard) to deal him any damage and as soon as he's in the middle of him attacks that might do him damage that they're capable of will be just as dangerous to their own men.

Yup, definately a bloody pile of goblins. I bet this guy would become a god who's portfolio is "making goblins pee their pants" after he kills enough of them and inspires enough fear to make them all believe in his power as absolute.
