Yep. Paris Hilton's in it, as is Damon Wayans, Jim Carey, Drew Carey, Marlon Wayans, Will Smith, Ben Affleck, Steve Buscemi, and Kevin Costner.

Please take note, only two sentences in this post are true.

hehe Yeah the "Yep." sentence and the sentence saying only two are true! LOL No real news or confirmations have been released other than they are making it. I did read a vague reporting that it is indeed a true sequel to the first (which I thought was fun and entertaining, on par with an episode of Hercules or Xena... they coulda done better though).

It would be kind of neat if they including a little picture-in picture of a group at a table playing, which you couldn't hear, but when a person spoke for their character their mouths and the actor playing the character's speech would line up. They'd roll and you could tell by their reactions how the character was about to do. The DM could narrate.

Heck, I'd settle for some on-screen dice that would roll for an outcome. That might get annoying after awhile though. :)

Or maybe that's just silly.

Good greif. Where did they come up with this cast? With exception of the very forgettable Bruce Payne, who are these people? And Gerry Lively hasn't done anything more impressive than a few beer commercials as a director, certainly Windfall has been bettered by some good commercials.

I do believe that "Dungeons and Dragons the sequel" might just rank right up there with "Nugra, the Impotent" in it's entertainment value. I really hope I'm dead wrong, but wow, what an absolutely nowhere cast and director.

Bah. Cloak and Dagger, and it's heartwarming message that roleplaying is for delusional 11 year olds, was responsible for me having to spend most of my adolescence hiding Dragon magazines from my parents like they were a stash of Japanese eel porn.

Hell yeah, they're pretty nice too. :D

Btw, Bruce Payne - as with most of the cast - was directed to act and speak the lines a certain way...I can be almost 100% sure that the sequel-makers won't repeat that kind of mistake. I'm still kind of surprised that Jeremy Irons didn't shove a boom mike up Courtney's arse in the first film and walk off the set.

As long as the Second movie doesn't stink like so many sequels have I'm all for it! The 1st D&D movie was actually pretty decent, all things considered. What people don't seem to understand is that it's really REALLY hard to encompass an entire gameworld in 2 hours worth of scrpit and acting. Just think of how long it takes to put together that world on paper. The movie doesn't focus on that, however. It focuses on the exploits, accomplishments, and perils of the heroes and the villains they face. Just look at the Lord of the Rings and how it showed off the majority of the world through the path that the heroes took. Think about that and be a little more open-minded when you go see the next movie and you will most likely be a little more open-minded about their hard-work ;)

Plus wasn't the LotR movies together like 9 hours long? :P

I have heard a bunch of crap from people over the first D&D movie saying that it is well..crap basically.

They say it is overly cheesy, and not realistic enough..but when in reality..thats EXACTLY how a typical D&D game works. A rogue decides to do something stupid (2 rogues in this case)..they meet another party member and more danger shows up and they either fight or get away..then they meet another character randomly who decides to join up as well..the characters end up in a tavern to discuss strategy..then someone else comes in and screws it all up. Then they have to do goofy side quests (like that guild of thieves trap thing) which leads back to the main quest and having to either fight or run. Then someone dies and it is really cheesy.

That is the basic plot to the D&D movie..and the basic plot to a D&D game. :)

I really liked that part of the first D&D movie. I don't want the 2nd one to be overly serious..I want it to be like I am watching people play another game of D&D.
hiryuu

10-23-04, 04:21 AM
I dunno. I'd have liked to see a Slayers-style comedy, as that would be closer to D&D than the last film.

"Oh my god! Are you okay!"
"S'okay, I got hit points," the fighter says, with an arrow in his face.

"I'm the good guy, you're the bad guy, that means we throw down. See, right here, my character sheet says chaotic......... neutral. Okay. It also says my Charisma is 8. Screw the character sheet. Me good, you bad, stabby death for you!"

I could sit through dialogue like that.

Need dumb fighter, overzealous cleric, hot headed wizard or sorcerer, and the one character who's so stacked over with templates he just ends up being ineffective. Ah, and everyone conveniently ignores his appearance, even though he's obviously not normal or common at all.

If anything we should have 4 people to play as the 'players' and 4 DIFFERENT people playing as the 'characters'.

Would also need one guy to be the 'dungeon master' and then probably a few people to play multiple roles as bad guys.

Could even go into the original batman stuff were words pop up when people get hit..but only for like 'CLEAVE!' or 'POWER ATTACK! or other special attacks. Hell..for a magic missile you could spray paint a raquetball red and superglue some streamers to the back of it and throw them at eachother, lol.

Doesn't have to be a masterpiece or anything..just have to get the main idea across.

Doesn't matter about a cast list..if this happens WE (or me and people in my area) will be doing this. Screw having a company from the outside taking our glory! :)

If anything we should decide what types of characters we should have as both players and characters.

Do all the players have glasses..or is one a stereotypical nerd with other people around the table as well?

Do we have the characters be a basic default group (maybe without a dwarf or halfling since we aren't running a big budget thing here, heh)..so a rogue, fighter, cleric, wizard? Or substitute cleric and fighter with a paladin..the rogue with an overly flamboyant bard, and have a druid who complains about how much the forests are so much better than the city..etc?

This is, actually, a really better idea than making a senceless and boring as the first D&D movie.

Even if I'd never read one of those books, there is no way they can make it worst than the D&D movie.

Yes, so I suppose you could do it again. Only this time you get to put Salvatore's name on it. It might be worse than the first movie, but it has twice the name recognition.

We could even rename Drizzt to "Drow Tidus."

You guys are forgetting one major thing here.

This is the Dungeons & Dragons movie..NOT the Forgotten Realms movie..NOT the Dragonlance movie.

Dungeons & Dragons's default world is Greyhawk..now whether they use Greyhawk or some homebrew world is upto them.

Putting Drizzt in the movie would be stupid because that would make it Forgotten Realms..which is not the case.

Having Salvatore write for it would make it Forgotten Realms..which is not the case.

Having Weiss and Hickman write it would make it Dragonlance..which is not the case.

So instead of bickering over Forgotten Realms or Dragonlance or SPECIFIC settings..try to find a general middle of the road subject here. Dungeons & Dragons is not limitted to setting, so keep your setting preferences out of this thread please.

Since RA Salvatore, Margaret Weiss, and Tracy Hickman are some of the best selling Fantasy authors I think your opinion is in the minority.

And so you feel the need to defend something that doesn't need defending? As if somehow my professional opinion suddenly makes yours worth less?

At least I can rest easy the fact that I also write fantasy and science fiction for a living and I can point out where Salvatore makes ROOKIE MISTAKES that I'd be ashamed if a high school student made (namely: characters never develop, dialogue is bland and overdone, and plots are recycled, sometimes two, maybe three times and passed off as new. Also, location description is not Slavatore's strong point). The rest of my immediate family is also int he writing businees (my mother teaches poetry and fiction writing at UCF, and my stepfather teaches English and writes ornithology books and prose-style nonfiction accounts of jungle exploration). I'll say one good thing about Salvatore, as is my policy: Salvatore knows how to write a fight scene well (I think this actually is what account for his popularity).

Amount of money something's made isn't a good gauge of how good it is - I think we can all agree Phantom Menace isn't worth the filmit's printed on, and yet it was one of the highest grossing movies of its decade, while Avalon would have died a horrible, quick, painful death at the American box office while it's possibly one of the best movies I've ever seen.

Historically, bad things often do well (look at the current situation in Hollywood - it's an entire industry built on being trite, cilchéd, and overdone), and as Americans, we tend to like the underdog, and we also don't like to think too much (seriously; look at how many films, books, and television lately required you to think to understand what was happening - you'll find practically none, not even The Matrix, which felt the need to spell everything out for you and use repetitive questions in a vague attempt to be zen).

I say if you're not gonna require the audience think, at least be funny.

10-25-04, 02:39 AM
To be fair the second and third matrixs didn't spell out it's ending, and because it did so it they were far less popular than the first. Of course that also might have to do with the time wasted in Zion, but then again I tend to represent a minority opinion.

Trite for whom? The viewing public at large has seen LOTR and a tassle of fantasy movies before it that were basically HERO completes Quest and defeats Bad Guy.

The Dark Elf Trilogy would have a drow (an entirely original concept to the public at large), touch on issues of prejudice (not dealt with in any fantasy movies I can think of), take place mostly in the underdark (and entirely new setting for most movie goers), take place in an entirely evil society (a new thing for most movie goers) and involve what might be termed an anti-hero (at least at first).

Tell me of the horde of fantasy movies that have these elements such that they are tired and cliched?

If instead you are referring to tired and cliched to us fantasy enthusiasts, may I remind you that, technically, LOTR is the tiredest of the tired and cliched of the cliched. (srcasm on) But somehow it worked (sarcasm off).

I work in the film business and, in fact, am an employee in one of the companies that was going to produce the film, before we dropped out.

I doubt the second D&D movie will go straight to video (amazing to me how many non-film people think they know about the biz). The first one made a nice profit for its producers and distributor. Yes, the film was lousy. Yes, it didn't do that well in the Box Office. But it was also shot for something like $16 million, which is unheard of for a special effects movie. It drew enough people into the theatres, and then video and DVD and pay TV, to justify doing another one.

My prediction is that the next one will have a bloated budget, since the director and Joel Silver probably don't have enough sense to realize that the only reason it made money is because it was so low budget. When fewer people go to see the next one, because the first one was so bad, they will then lose a ton of money and that will be the end of the D&D movies.

I asked the director about that, and he said that he just didn't have the CGI budget to do more than that. In fact, he was under immense pressure to cut the beholder altogther, but he wanted to at least include it for a second or two. Doing a beholder in its full glory would have involved a pretty intense CGI work up.

The first D&D movie was supposed to me a $100 million budgeted epic. But that fell through and the budget plummeted precipitously.

I had a chance to read three draft scripts of the movie, the first epic budget one, which was just horrible and eventually made its way onto the screen sans many expensive scenes. There was a second, lower budget script that in no way resembled the storyline of the actual movie that was produced. That version was so-so, and could have been salvaged. It has a neat scene in an underground city of the undead that could have been done nicely.

I'm all for a fun movie, but I find nothing in the first D&D film as enjoyable. It ranks right down there with Star Trek: INSURRECTION (the TNG cast considered it a fun film to be in, but many Trek fans find it less than enjoyable to watch).

My example of a fun yet enjoyable movie is Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl.

And if you check out the movies coming out in the near future, you'll see that there is likely to be a rather steady flow of fantasy films. Basically, *because* of LOTR, we can expect many more, regardless of whether they are "good" or not. Just look at all the documentaries that came out after Michael Moore's craptastic Fahrenheit 911. Because he made a bundle, everyone is suddenly hawking the "next big documentary" -- and not just at the indie orgies.

Yeah, Dr. Demento's "let's listen in on a D&D Session" proves how even more "stupid" a typical D&D session is then the D&D Movie

It was the last movie we saw as a Family before my Dad Died and though he knew I play D&D games, he didn't know much about the game mecahincs and such and he enjoyed the Movie Very much.

For what it was I enjoyed it too though I loudly said "THis is a Homebrew Campaign" like 1 minute into the Movie, which immediately made me lose expectations of seeing Drizzt, Eliminster, or "the Simbul"

Some people suck at DMing and Story set up, Especially when it's a "Home brew". The Story wasn't that bad, though I feel everyone was expecting an established story or at least a story in the Forgotten Realms and not a "Homebrew" World and story which is why they were upset.

Back to the topic at hand

The original movie at least attempted what many of us wanted for years, a D&D movie.

While it failed, we can hope for a joining of realities. The second movie, knowing the first one failed, will learn from its mistakes and be better.

The presence of LotR will, as Seeker95 said, will probably cause a wave of new 'fantasy' movies. Take heart at that. Some of them will suck, horribly. Others might be okay. And a scant handful will be good. If LotR and D&D and stuff like that never came out, we'd see maybe 1 fantasy movie come out a year. If that sucked it made it 100% suckiness. If there's 10 movies that come out, and there's an 80% suckfest, that means there's still 2 good movies.
Korone

10-26-04, 06:26 PM
The problem is that they're making the second movie based on the first one.
(If not, I hardly see why they had took the same actors and the same character.)

So, it can only be with the same 'history', same genre. Well, be like the first one. A comedy-like movie for kids and unmatured teenagers.
How can it be a good movie ?

At least, if they could spend these few millions on somethings usefull than wasting them.
Cervantes

Anyway, I know they worked hard on the film. I was following it during production a bit, and they all wanted it to be of Lord of the Rings caliber, and kept getting cut off on every side from doing it. I watch the movie, and it really is kinda painful, because of all that hard work that went into it. Even Jeremy Irons seems a bit over-done, a bit melodramatic.

Hoepfully we get some umber hulks and Illithids this next time around. I'd pay money to see that.

What I think would make a kickin' film: Neil Gaiman scripting Planescape.

The problem is that they're making the second movie based on the first one.
So, it can only be with the same 'history', same genre.
How can it be a good movie ?The same way Highlander 2 can be sucky when the first one was great. And the way they can make a third one and just pretend the second one never existed. The same way Star Trek II can be so impressive that the long lame V-Ger of Star Trek I is easy to overlook.

It's a different movie.

I wish they'd really do Greyhawk, instead of Forgotten Realms.

I recently had a friend of mine tell me they are workin on a nother &D movie is there truth in this?

I believe it is called "The Scourge of Fury"

It's already out and is a "Choose your own adventure" thingy

Actually more like "space Ace" and "Dragon's Lair" but more rigid where you only make certain decisions and it is basically a Linear storyline that you make the right predetermine desicion to finish the movie properly

Maybe,
But IMO the second is going to suck as hard as the first one.
I've rarely seen a second movie that was better than the first one, expecially when the first one sucked. Unless, when they took a different story/character/etc. Which isn't the case with D&D2.

Star Trek II (the best of the entire bunch)
Terminator II (same character -- new side)
Rambo (sequel to First Blood) (at least as good)
X-Men II
Swan Princess II
Tomb Raider II
Addams Family Values
More than a few of the Friday the 13th movies.

I've said, that the first one sucked. None of these had a suck-ass predecessor that can be compared as D&D.

The only things that can make some bad, is cause the movie is old and didn't had the technologie compared at today.

Only Airplane and Swan princess that I have no ideas what they are..

Well....

As usual, I'm with you most of the way here Seeker, but...

Airplane II? One of the lamest sequels ever? Not even written by the same people!
Rocky II. As you said, basically a remake, except he wins in the end, which for me, takes it completely out of the running. Blech.
Addition to the list. Godfather II.

Happy er, Viewing.

Get the Scourge of Worlds DVD. It's Greyhawk enough for ya.
