| Rickiel06-09-06, 01:14 PM | Sometimes one can tell nearly everything about a person by their home. The appearance of said home from the outside, the actual inside, the books on the shelf, the trophies hung, the dinner plates still needing to be washed... But as adventurers, PC's do tend to move alot and that means rarely having time to spend to tending the ole' fortress before being called to slay the evil dragon, find the wand of world saving, and of course cooking up a tryst with the local princess. As a wandering notion that's been buzzing in my head for the past day or so, have you as a player, DM, every tried describing a character via what's in their house? What precisely is in a wizard's workshop? What books does the cleric read beyond religious text books? How many kids does that fighter have anyway?! |
| Shaggy_Shaggs06-09-06, 01:44 PM | I have as a player, once, but it didn't work out too well. Nobody really cared about the large log cabin painstakingly built by the (formerly) retired warrior's own hands, on secluded woodland property paid for with most of the funds from his old career, set near a great river and lake for fishing. Nobody noticed the total lack of weapons to be found, nor his hyperactive daughter's toys strewn about the livingroom, nor samples of his son's budding poetry attempts hung up on the outside of the cooler. A few did find amusement in his wife's complaint about the lack of easy access to trendy entertainment out in the middle of nowhere, at least, but none appreciated the peace and quiet and slower pace of the home and grounds. I guess to those other PCs at least, the only thing noteworthy about a middle-aged warrior trying to have a normal life is how many pieces he tears the latest BBEG's body into, once he's dragged out of retirement yet again and pushed over the line, from duty to murderous berserker fury. |
