A couple of questions. [Archive] - Wizards Community

1. What EXACTLY does +1 to existing xcastingclass do?

2. I can't find it anywhere but will I receive the 20% XP penalty for multiclassing from Shadowcaster to Master of Shadows?

Keep in mind that I'm not a DM nor do I have any of the books memorized.

You don't get an xp penalty for taking prestige class. +1 arcane or divine casting level gives you more spells per day and known if applicable. Example you take a level into a prestige class that gives 1+ to existing caster level, you would gain whatever bonuses from the prestige class in addition to more spells per day and or known as if you had taken a level in your previous class.

-you are treated as one level higher in determing the effects of any spells you cast (i.e., using an orange ioun stone)
-you gain spells as a caster one level higher than you were before receiving this bonus (i.e., gaining a level in certain prestige classes)

2. You do not receive xp penalties for gaining prestige class levels. Ignore these when determining xp penalties.

12-06-06, 12:33 PM Could you tell me where you saw that there's no penalty on XP for gaining prestige class (as opposed to standard multiclassing). If possible, I'd like to know the book and page. I've had disagreement on that one before and couldn't find the answer.
