Large Gnoll

A couple of years back ... when i had just started DM-ing, one of my DM-friends had his birthday. Another friend of his had been playing DnD for over half a decade, and asked if i was itnerested in DM-ing for him and my friend for one afternoon. I agreed ... OF COURSE!!! ... and went to work. I made everything up from scratch, so it wasnt the adventure that i am used to dm-ing, but it was fun nonetheless.

At some point, one of the characters was missing from the inn the party stayed at. He went out gathering herbs in the woods. He was ambushed by a couple of wolves and cried out for help. The party responded and killed the wolves, and took out a few skeletons on the way who were burning and raiding a cart with a few nobles. It was a quick battle ... nothing spectacular and nothing special about it ... but the guy ... who had DM-ed for over 5 years was stunned by my DM-ing performance. I was stunned by his stupitdity ... How can you call THIS the greatest battle ever??

My question ....

What is the greatest battle one of your characters has ever been in? Or what is the greatest one you have ever DM-ed??

Largest as in size? Easy: about 2 years ago, the group I was currently playing with walked into a village only to find out that it was being menaced by a massive gnoll army, so we gave them some help. That night, the gnolls attacked and, in a massive battle we managed to win. The DM said that out of 147 gnolls a grand total of 3 got away. This was not including the two gnoll elites (each was a third level ranger), and the Gnoll Druid that was leading them. It was a huge fight.

Just how many people were in this battle besides the 147 + 2 +1 = 150 gnolls?

The largest battle I have ever run was a long time ago when I had a huge climatic battle near the end of the campaign. The PCs were involved in a war, with over 1000 troups on each side. Of course, I only properly ran a small part of the battlefield that included the PCs...who happened to ride out against the elite groups. So there were about 30 to 50 (I cant remeber exactly) enemies, with the 4 of them and several NPCs. It was pretty epic :)

Six 4th level PCs and three 3rd Level PCs (who were refered to as "meatshields")
10-12 mixed townspeople (first level Warriors, Experts, and Commoners)
Four Centaurs with no class levels (At least I don't think they had any class levels)
one 7th level (I think) Druid and his fourth level assistant

So, about 25-27, plus the Shambling Mound the Druid Summoned. It was brutal!:fight!: :fight!: :fight!:

Heh, I just recently ran a "Contest of Champions" as part of my ongoing campaign. It involved 5 11th-13th level PC's, and about 35 similarily-leveld NPC's. The Contests ranged from one-on-one combat, to group combat, to the final Grand Melee, of over 40 level 10+ characters.

It took a loooooong time to do, but it was a lot of fun :)
