i just wanted to know if there is any place to play D&D over a chat system, i love D&D though my friends and I can't get together to play all that often, and I'd like to play extra on the side. Is there a site were all the players and the DM talk by typing and games are hosted like that?

You can take it beyond just basic chat and die rolling, and instead play online with virtual miniatures on a virtual battlemat, using what's called virtual tabletop software. Click the link on my signature to see one that I've developed.

If you want to see a comprehensive list of all the virtual tabletop software available, so you can "comparison shop", check out http://www.battlegroundsgames.com/links.html (the VTs are near the bottom of the page). The list includes both commercially-sold and free programs. You should be able to find something that meets your needs, whatever they are.

Hope this helps.

I play in the play by post format. I've found it most forgiving to my lifestyle. The two sites I'm in love with are http://www.dndonlinegames.com and http://www.myth-weavers.com

Both are great sites with wonderful communities. Plus there is NO shortage of players, which appeals to me as a DM.
