A Dungeon Keeper feel/setting? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I posted a while back about looking for a setting that would be ripe for having characters that are evil and could be fruitful in a setting. So I tried Ravenloft (Nuh uh), then a few others from independant companies but I finally realized "Why not try to pull the Dungeon Keeper story angle." Dungeon Keeper was a PC game where you are the BAD game stuck in a world populated by Good and you basically had to let everything go to hell. So now the question I pose is "What would be the best setting that is ripe with goody goody paladins and filled with TOO much optimism that a truelly evil and smart character could rip apart with glee?"

Wait...is that he one where you had to build and defend a dungeon?
If so, I have a great idea or two.
If not, then how is it different than a normal evil campagin?

(Forgive me if this does not follow the game concept all that much, I only played the game for about an hour and that was many many years ago)

My idea is simply, do not make them human. Humans tend to not to be known for defending a dungeon.
Go with a race that does. Kobolds are easy enough, but they make better hirelings than masters.
My next idea are Illithids.
...
I think I have been DMing for too long. ^_^

So with those ruled out (You could do Illithids, you could just not have it above grounds. Wait! You could! They could have a cave where they gather information about the normal world and palidins come to constantly stop them! Ohh!) and dragons too obvious, think a it smaller. Hmm...
Maybe half humans, half demons? That would give reason enough as to why people are after them. They wish to protect the dungeon and expand it because it is their only sancuarry in the good ridden world.
So as thus, they get the other demi races to help them, building an system that works with them as the bosses and leaders of military attacks, while having XXXX race work as the scouts and cannon fodder.
Then they get some clerics, alllowing them to turn the dead paladins into the undead.

Hm....:behold:

Ummmm, well.... I ment in a more serious tone. Not actually EMULATING the game to D20! I ment the storyline and feel of being the Villain and working your way in the shadows into a land of good.

I think any tone that has Illithids in it is rather serious...

Besides that, there are no other settings that remotley resemble dungeon keeper, or it's far superior sequel, dungeon Keeper Two (keeper... microscopic pigs are stalking your dungeon)

I think what Pocky has posted is a rather good idea.
(Keeper, your dungeon floor is lumpy... have your minions jump up and down)

However, if you want to have things on a slightly smaller scale... go out and buy Dragonstar. That setting has a great idea that would certainly allow you to have your players be evil, since they could simply be... say... drow explorers hired by the current emperor to go out and scout out yet another boderlands planet.

Though, I honestly think that Pocky's idea is rather good.
(Keeper... a lost spirit has wandered into your dungeon... oh wait, it just wandered out again!)

But here are a few modifications...

Along with all that, the PC's must gather together pieces of a powerful artifact... once completed, they will be able to cast the surface world into shadow, allow their more light-sensitive minions to fair well on the surface... and invade the surface worlders ONCE AND FOR ALL!
(Big monsters... big game... I LOVE IT!)

Next your gonna suggest all my creatures stay away from gamgling otherwise some magical influence will have them all dancing when someone wins big and cashes in. ::Raises his hand:: Why I oughta!

P.S. That is utterly disturbing how many quotes you can remember from Dungeon Keeper 2 :D

(Keeper, your dungeon is damp, install central heating).

The witching hour, Curses Half Price.

Oh are you still here? I was just about to lock up...

Damn that was a good game. One day they will make the third one.

About all I can think of is to add in the BoVD. Unless you are going for Garlandesque campy evil, add in some of the real thing.

And for good ole paladin bashing nothing beats the realms. Foes are scaled all the way up with plenty of "Orcus" grade antagonists like Elminster.

You forgot to mention that they'd be dancing to the Beegees 'Disco Inferno"

(burn baby, burn baby, DISCO INFERNO!)

PS. I actually downloaded that song...

PPS. The reason I remember so much is because I can remember what I want, and nothing else...
