| HunterBlack10-01-05, 05:03 AM | I can't find the answers that I am looking for in the books so I will ask you guys. 1) IF you have an item that raises your INT does that allow you to learn spells sooner? For example. Your int is 14 and due to that you can't learn a 3rd level spell unless it is 16 or better. If you are wearing a helm or something that makes raises your int does that allow you to learn spells you wouldn't be without the item? 2) When using a bow do you use your dex for the “to hit” or strength? Secondly do you add the dex for damage or is that. 3) What is the deal with touch attacks? |
| FlameLover10-01-05, 05:14 AM | 1) A higher Int score will give you bonus Spells Per Day but your Spells Known are FIXED. So you can learn any number of spells from another spellbook or scroll, etc. you don't gain any from a high Intelligence (permanent or otherwise) 2) Dexterity bonus instead of Strength to hit, and Strength PENALTY to hit if you have less than 10 Strength. You can apply your Strength to damage if you use a composite bow though (check the PHB for details) 3) They are normal attacks except they ignore armor and shield bonuses. Che k the glossary in the back of the PHB for more details. |

For example. Your int is 14 and due to that you can't learn a 3rd level spell unless it is 16 or better. If you are wearing a helm or something that makes raises your int does that allow you to learn spells you wouldn't be without the item? An item that raises the casting stat of a caster grants that caster extra bonus spells (once they've rested, not immeadiatly). Because their casting stat is higher, it also increases the save DC against their spells. And, as far as I know, it lets you learn and cast spells of levels you couldn't before (though you still must be high enough level to have at least 1 spell slot for that spell's level). And you can cast 3rd level spells if your casting stat is 14, highest level castable is casting stat minus ten, not casting stat's modifier. 2) When using a bow do you use your dex for the “to hit” or strength? Secondly do you add the dex for damage or is that. Always use Dex for "to hit" bonuses for ranged attacks (including bows), unless there is some kind of ability in effect that states otherwise. Damage bonuses (even for ranged attacks) usually come from Str. (The most notable exceptions being Sneak attack bonus damage dice or various accuracy based feats such as weapon specialization). Note that with bows you always apply a Str penalty to damage, but a Str bonus to damage can only be used if the bow was built to accomadate it (see Mighty Composite Bows int he equipment chapter of the PHB). 3) What is the deal with touch attacks? Touch attacks ignore armor, natural armor, and sheild bonuses to AC. These attacks only require the attacker to touch the opponent. Touch attacks usually do not provoke attacks of opportunity (though casting a spell that grants a touch attack is a different story). Touch attacks used at range are called ranged touch attacks or rays. Rays are identicle to touch attacks, except that since it is a ranged attack it uses the attacker's Dex modifier instead of Str to modify the attack roll. Also of note is the incorporeal touch attack, which is much like a touch attack, but it does not ignore AC bonus that are force effects (such as Mage Armor or Bracers of Armor). |
