| lordconservative08-14-04, 06:09 PM | His mother has made a rather strange request. For him to be allowed to play, I must find a reformed occultist with extensive knowledge of the game to say that there is no connection between D&D and the occult. I was speechless for nearly10 seconds when he told me this over the phone. Perhaps I could provide her with some good articles or threads on the subject instead. Would any of you mind posting some links? (I'm not very good with Search) |
| Jagyr Ebonwood08-14-04, 06:21 PM | I remember awhile ago I read an online article from a guy that about fits that description...I'll see if I can find it. Lots of people on here know where it is, too. Maybe someone can point it out. |

| Jagyr Ebonwood08-14-04, 06:38 PM | Thanks, Kaya. Perhaps that article ( here (http://www.mjyoung.net/dungeon/confess.html) ) is the one I was thinking of. |
| Plunderer_of_the_planes08-14-04, 06:55 PM | try this (http://www.humpin.org/mst3kdd/) |
| Seeker9508-14-04, 07:40 PM | Oh for Pete's sake. If his mother is really demanding that, he is better off not playing until he gets to college. (Note, the "if" and "really" are italicized for a reason. I do doubt the validity of the request. Who knows how to access website message boards, but can't type "reformed cultist dungeons dragons" into www.google.com?) Although the trolls are often visible within the cages, we are advised against feeding them. |
| Gryllmyre08-14-04, 07:49 PM | I'd much rather expose my child to D&D than a reformed occultist. A REFORMED one, even. |
| Ashrayn08-14-04, 07:52 PM | If the mother wants her child to find someone who practices in pagan rituals and rites, he should find someone else to play DnD with. There are Christian DnD players. He should find someone like that and play with them. |

Please don't be so rude. |
| Zyphus08-14-04, 08:10 PM | Reformed? Like brought back from his essential salts? What if there just are no occultists that play D&D? The next thing stranger to someone saying they are an occultist is someone that says they used to be one, which makes me wonder just what they are now. Ditto the person that said it isn't worth it, or the one that can find a church group to play with. Or just invite his mother along. I had a crush on one of my friend's mother. I wish she had played! |

One of my best Dm's and later players was a friend of mines mother....although I never had a crush on her I can say she is the one person who got me interested in Fantasy as a whole and not just D&D. We had some great games especially the night that we kept spilling Tea all over my FR maps....Sad to say she passed on about 5 years ago but every time I play I can't help but feel she's right there with us playing along...... Sorry for the ramble but Zyphus did have a good suggestion Invite hos mother along...We let my mother play one time to show her that it was a harmless game and she had a blast.... |
| Joni-san08-14-04, 09:35 PM | Well there's The Escapist (http://www.theescapist.com/), a quite usefull site. The only flaw with it would be that it never updates. |
| Seeker9508-14-04, 10:30 PM | Originally posted by lordconservative I typed exactly that and it brought up nothing useful.Funny. I got 42 hits, with eleven of them belonging to a religious blog site. Did you read some of that stuff? I'm sorry if you perceive my skepticism as rude. In 26 years of playing D&D, I have met many closed-minded anti-D&D individuals. But I have met none in the past five years, and only one in the past ten. In that time, NONE have been willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. Your friend's mother fears it is connected to the occult, and is willing to speak with an ex-occultist before she lets her child play? Either she is the stupidest mother in the world* (and you shouldn't be hanging around with any offspring her genes could produce) or your request is a joke. I'm willing to concede it could go either way. * By stupid mother, I do not mean her narrow view of D&D. I mean her willingness to trust the word of a former occultist in evaluating a game she doesn't trust before letting a child whose word she doesn't trust play it. |
| WizO_Catoblepas08-14-04, 10:40 PM | Ok, that's enough. I'm going to leave the thread open since the guest seems to ba asking the question in earnest. Let's remember that accusing a guest of trolling is considered baiting and is against the Code of Conduct. If one does feel that the thread violates the Code of Conduct, then report it. Otherwise, if one doesn't agree with the subject matter of the thread, then that individual should just not reply. |
| aravilar_holistacia08-15-04, 09:56 AM | Certainly this topic comes up frequently enough here in General, and my 2cp are much the same as Plunderer's. Letting your friend's mother watch a game of D&D is a great way to show her that there are no rituals or anything of the kind. She should be a responsible (mature) adult and realize that the game is just an extension of the imagination, with some dice rolls, and if she thinks rolling dice is an occult ritual, you're better off just letting it go. Like Seeker, I've seen some pretty stalwart D&D opponents, and most of them will not change their minds about it. You'll be lucky if your friend's mother changes her mind, but even if she doesn't, you can't say you didn't try. |
| Zherog08-15-04, 10:22 AM | * hides the sacrificial dagger behind his back and puts away his spell book * Yeah - I agree with aravilar. Just remember to not do those things on the night she visits. :schemes: |
