He's a wizard and he's EXTREMELY powerful and he's trying to kill a very popular young man. And he has flesh on his bones so he's not a skeleton. And he has multiple phylacteries. Although he calls them something else. I won't say any more than that.

I thought you could only have one and jump to another when you lost it... whilst He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has several and can't be truly defeated until they're all destroyed.

I thought you could only have one and jump to another when you lost it... whilst He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has several and can't be truly defeated until they're all destroyed. Don't know about in the core rules, but in the Forgotten Realms the ancient Lich Aumvor the Undying crafted an epic spell that changed his phylactery into the bones of one of his former apprentices - meaning anyone wanting to kill him has a couple of hundred phylacteries to track down. This has been gone over a dozen and a half times ever single freakin' JKR movie/book release...What's really horrible is the way those meanies make you click on the threads, especially when it's obvious what the thread is going to be about, knowing full well that you don't like them. Then, adding insult to injury, they grab your mouse and hit the "reply" button, and use your hands to type words in the box (over your protests), all the while saying, in a sing-songy playground bully voice, "Stop bumping the post! Stop bumping the post!" I'd be pretty sour, too, if I had to put up with jerks like that. Maybe you can get a lock for your door.

They're a part of general folklore, like hobgoblins, redcaps, hippogrifs, derro, sorcerers, dragons, zombies, werewolves, etc.. Specifically, there's a story about an undying sorcerer who hid his heart in an acorn. The word "lich" itself is just another word (albeit a very old one) for corpse.

newbiealpha 12-12-05, 09:30 PM	Acidangel, I will give you a hint. This villain is in the Harry Potter world. And okay, maybe Voldy's not EXACTLY a lich, but he is very close to one. He's certainly evil enough. And he did take out his own life force or soul, or anything you want to call it, and put it into an inanimate object in order to keep his physical 'rear end' safe from harm. And by the way, I was plenty subtile, or I mean subtul, or subtle, or something like that. :mad:
