Matan says he has personally met soldiers whose military career was harmed due to their connection to the game. Most soldiers who play Dungeons and Dragons simply do not admit to it while they are in the army, he says. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't this the same case with homosexuality not so long ago? If so, then history has once again proven to repeat itself.

"These people have a tendency to be influenced by external factors which could cloud their judgment, a military official says. "They may be detached from reality or have a weak personality - elements which lower a person's security clearance, allowing them to serve in the army, but not in sensitive positions."

Get the cleric to buff me, I'm going in!

This has been around for a while. At least a few months. I wonder what they do to gamers who don't play D&D but do play Rifts, Palladium, World of Darkness, etc.? Are they ok because they don't play D&D?

I'm shipping out for basic training in the U.S. Army in about a week, and my job in the army requires me to have security clearence, and they asked me not one thing about playing D&D. They drilled me on my finances and criminal and medical histories, as well as any connections I may or may not have to any organizations or foreign countries.

you would think that larping would help a guy in the forces. all that running around in forrests has got to give you some mad skills.
one thing the army needs is wizards "i cast detect WMD.......what do i see?"

Yes, this was posted before. In fact, if you look at the date of that article it says "02.28.05" and I definitely remember reading that sometime last April.

One of the reasons for this may be simple prejudice. Many roleplayers in Israel are olim from the former Soviet Union, who are discriminated against by the native born Israelis.

The military represents the single largest occupation-group of D&D players. Not only do they not hide the fact they play, it is a great way to blow off steam and fill the long, boring hours between duty shifts.

Yup. I'm Army MI, and never have I ever been surrounded by so many gamers. Of my current groups, only one player isn't in the military.

Guys ... I hope we're all aware that this is not the US Army doing this but the Israeli Army?

Just checking.

This damned Israeli army thing again?

A couple of months ago, it was involved in every third thread around here.

Yeah, the U.S. Army doesn't care a bit. When I was in Desert Storm I had a security clearance, and I played a LOT of DnD (we had nothing else to do most of the time). My DnD hobby never once came up at all, and we certainly didn’t keep it secret that we played. In fact, we publicized it quite a bit. Never once did an officer have a negative comment about it. I did have an NCO that ribbed me about it several times, but I used to get the same thing from my dad so it didn’t bother me much.

No offence to anyone here, but I must say that during my time there I was unimpressed with Israel. However, I can say the same for Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. I would advise anyone to avoid the middle east completely if you can, it’s a bad place to be all around, especially for women.

There's a lot of fascinating history and culture over there, but I'll take a good A&E or History Channel documentary rather than risk getting blown up for no reason other than I was born in the most amazing country in the world.
