| pr0fess0r04-21-05, 07:09 PM | Hi all After not playing D&D since my high school years some 20 years ago (but being a fairly experienced EverQuest / EverQuest 2 palyer, if that helps) I picked up the latest DMG, PH and MM and a set of dice recently, as well as Sunless Citadel, for me and 2 friends to play. (We just finished playing the LOTR edition of RISK a few times and they wanted to step up a level:) I've been reading all three books, and while I'm happy I cna run the game in terms of describng the world and working with the players, what I'm nervous about are the huge number of rules. I'll never remember how well an Elf sees in the dark or whether to roll a save or a reflex and so on. I guess my question is this: what is the basic workflow of a game? i.e. what should we all be rolling for an when? Is there a guide or a cheat sheet somewhere that looks something like this: Player walks into an area where I know a creature is hidden: - roll initiative - roll ??? Player wants to try climbing a tree: - roll ? Combat: - roll xx for npc. Add yy + zz - roll xx for player. if player is an Elf, add ??? Movement: etc etc You know what I mean? A summary of what to do in various situations, so for the first few games we're not forgetting to roll when we should, and we're adding up all the right scores and so on. i know the DMG has a brief simulation of a game session, but if anyone has some examples or links that point to playing it for the first time I'd greatly appreciate them many thanks and regards Lucas |

When someone is trying to do something that might not succeed, have him roll D20 + whatever ability modifier is appropriate + whatever skill is appropriate. Combat takes a bit to get used to. Read the chapter carefully, and then make sure you have the basics (initiative and attack) down. The rest comes with practice |

Also, you might want to go buy a DM screen, the tables on there might be just what you're looking for as it summarize pretty well what you outta know to make a quick decision. Also, be all honnest with each other. You're not familiar yet with the 3.5 rules, your friends either, together you can all agree that for the first few sessions, you will take it easy and take your time to check things and answer questions. You're there to have fun, but also to learn the rules as you go. Take your time at first, don't push it, and just have a great time! :D |
