Are you a player or a DM?
What campaign world do you play in?
What aspects of the game do you like most?
What books do others in your gaming group have access to?

The book *I* would buy is not necessarily one *you* would appreciate.

If you like monsters-your in heaven. All of the mms. If you like to expand the classes get the class guidebooks or complete books. IF you like the world your in and want more things get more books on the world. Read online reviews on amazon for books. Just get the one that appeals to you.

I would say get into psionics(psihb, expanded hb) I think thats like the most popular supplement known to man.

Races of stone is very good! Nice background-information, new classes, a new race, helpful feats.
I often found the feats and spells of the complete - books not very helpfull

The new domains of the C.D. are interesting, and there are some nice prestige-classes - but it is only good for lovers of a cleric.

Take a look at Unearthed Arcana. It's got a bunch of variants that expand possibilities.

On the other hand, most of these variants can be found at www.d20srd.org, so there may not be a need to buy it.

Basically what class do you play most often and then get that Complete book to round you out..

Also if you like playing different races one would say the Savage Species isnt all that bad.

If you like playing the basic races with a few tweaks then check in the Races of books..

personally, i think the new(er) book, magic of incarnum is really neat. Then again, i got it not too long ago so its still in that new, shiny phase. I have yet to actually use it and break it in

Expanded Psionics Handbook is effectively Core Book 4, so go with that.

magic of incarnum is really neat.My problem with recommending this book to someone asking the type of question provided by the OP is that Incarnum is a radically different element. You either use it in your campaign or you don't. And if it doesn't fit your campaign, the whole book is useless to you. The OP is having trouble providing us with details (and with choosing a book, category of books, or even line of books), so a book like Magic of Incarnum just seems a bit too specific.

spelling is a skill i only have 1 rank in. but because of my nordic history i have to take a negetive 2 in that skill. and my intelligence is a modest 8. so i am lucky i can even sign on the computer. what most of you already know is the book called dungeon master guide II.

I suggest a book like The Lord of the Rings trilogy or C.S Lewis's The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. Perhaps for fun Douglas Adams, or for historical reference perhaps the Bible, or even Beowulf. Gilgamesh is also a good one.

These are the most effective books for reference in any Dungeons and Dragons game.

I_Strahd, your reply has climbed you to the top five in my list of the Boards' Light Hearted!
Not that everyone thinks that's a good thing, but in my book, you're okay. Welcome to the Boards!

Unearthed Arcana is good if you already have a strong grounding in the basic rules, otherwise it might be "too much, too soon". The DMG II has many strong points, and should be helpful to most players, but even more so to DM's. If you want psionics, the XPH is the only source for those rules, but I am unfamiliar with it. Each of the Complete... and Races of... books have both weak and strong points, but each series could have easily been done as a single book.

If you are the GM and don't have an idea on setting yet you may want to pick up one of the campaign setting books such as Eberron (which was written for v3.5) or Forgotten Realms or something.

For campaign worlds get greyhawk. One book nothing else-$26.95. Im a follower of greyhawk. The core is made for it. Also it uses it for examples.
