| Doopliss02-10-06, 10:54 PM | Recently, there have been a few attempts at creating a long-standing player competition, most of which have failed due to, among other things, bad luck. I'm stepping up to try one, also. There's currently one judging position vacant, that I can't seem to fill. There are no requirements, just post if you're interested. For rules and information, see http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=578944. |
| Zherog02-11-06, 11:30 AM | The thread's not failing, dude. It's barely been 12 hours. Consider this a bump for ya - I'll ask my questions here instead of the other thread to give you a boost. I'm not completely clear how the second part is judged. Could you post a quick example? I mean, the first part is fairly easy to figure out. But I don't quite get how somebody judges the actions of an adventuring party. Maybe I need more caffeine first. ;) How many entries do you anticipate? that might effect whether some folks are willing to spend some time working on the nitty gritty details of judging. Oh - I'll add one more, though it's more a comment than a question. You ought to determine up front which books are allowed to be used when building a character. Core only? Any WotC? Anything at all? It's an important piece of the mechanics you need to resolve. |

I was the only guy who made a judge application in 12 days since Doopliss set it up, and one of a mere three posters in that thread.Consider this a bump for ya - I'll ask my questions here instead of the other thread to give you a boost. Well, it seems you're too late now in either case, since Doopliss is on vacation, and cannot answer your queries. I shall do my best, however. I'm not completely clear how the second part is judged. Could you post a quick example? I mean, the first part is fairly easy to figure out. But I don't quite get how somebody judges the actions of an adventuring party. Maybe I need more caffeine first. Yeah, get more cafffeine. Caffeine good... Okay, this is my understanding. Each competition a new mission is made, possibly with a particular theme to it (Ie- lots of traps, or puzzles, or a swarm of goblins to smash) with a required level assigned to the mission. Doopliss (And possibly the rest of us judges), who will act as the DM, sends each participant through this mission (who are not necessarily all of the participants from part 1 of the competition), and we judge based on how much resources the PC has used. For example, if Bill Bloggs, the PC example, somehow died during the mission, but because he took all the hits and relied on risky tactics that would have looked incredibly cool but just didn't work out, 0-1 points would be given for Resource Expenditure (Depending on when the PC died), but 8-10 points would be awarded for risk (Depending on how much **** the PC got into) and 5-6 points for Interest (Depending on how cool it would have looked as a movie). Roleplaying points are awarded for doing stuff in-character, much like you would award a player Roleplaying Experience for not metagaming and contributive to the mission as a whole. So, say Bill Bloggs got killed while trying a risky situation that looked cool, because he badmouthed the benevolent king, with his über guards at his side, And his alignment is LG, And his roleplaying stats are all 18. Roleplaying points? 0-1. The candidate can choose to make his actions public, and everybody else on the forums might say that he deserves more roleplaying points, because Bill Bloggs had an obnoxious personality. If a substantial number of posters agree, then the judges will be more lenient in point-giving. I hope that's all. How many entries do you anticipate? that might effect whether some folks are willing to spend some time working on the nitty gritty details of judging. Well, since nobody posted on the other thread, I can only assume they're either already gearing up for the first competition (this we have seen some evidence of), or they're groaning in their chairs, wondering how long this players competition's gonna last, because the other three never finished. So it's up in the air at the moment. But I'd assume about 10-25 candidates. Oh - I'll add one more, though it's more a comment than a question. You ought to determine up front which books are allowed to be used when building a character. Core only? Any WotC? Anything at all? It's an important piece of the mechanics you need to resolve. Doopliss said it's an open field. So, anything at all. I would probably advise candidates to pick only material from WOTC-only 3.5 books, however. |

Does that include all the stuff in Unearthed Arcana? That could get ugly. What about something that appeared in both a 3.0 and 3.5 book - especially if the 3.0 version is better (yes, I'm looking at you Order of the Bow Initiate prestige class)? |

Ooh, Unearthed Arcana could indeedy-doo make things ugly. I would ban UA and say 'take the 3.5 version or take nothing' but certainly not without consultation with the other judge. It's this sort of stuff that makes me really want a third judge about now. |
| Zherog02-11-06, 03:50 PM | :D I'm still not too keen on the second piece, but go ahead and put me as a judge. I think having stuff like this strengthens the community, and makes the place better for everybody. Hopefully, the idea takes off, and more folks are willing to judge in the future. One idea would be to contact, privately, some of the folks who frequent the What's A DM To Do forum, and see if they have interest in, well, DMing in this manner. |
