Wells lets justr start this off with how it all started. I have a group of friends that trying to play atleast 2 times a week, but with work and school we only get together on sunday.

The group of people we have is great, our d.m. is one you might have heard about, he is on this message bored as milodagreat. There is this one guy in the party that thinks he rules the game, everything that one player wants to bring into the game the d.m. brings it up and we all vote on it. Well acouple of things he wanted to bring in were just insane and we all voted againist it. Now we are very new at this game, me and the d.m. want to just stick to the simple stuff at first and then bring in the different stuff later on. All he does is bi*ch and complain about how we are jerks and lame for not wanting to go for the crazy stuff. Just because of this when my character was dieing he didn't use a potion to save him or try to heal him and then i lost my character. He feels he is gods gift to the game, he is a level 20 :censored:. I very close to my boiling point with this guy
what should I do

thanks

p.s. sorry about the swearing, I'm just really upset about this, he makes me want to quite the game, he even wants us to get a new d.m. cause he can't get away with murder. I totally disagree with him, i really enjoy our d.m.

Well simply talk to him about what kind of campaign you guys want. If you do not want to play as power-gamers, tell him so. Do not quit your game if he is the one who's making the game dull. He has to adjust to the kind of campaign you are looking for, otherwise he's the one who will have to quit. Also, your DM should remind him that what he knows isn't the same as to what his character knows...it isn't a video game. As a DM myself, everytime he would want to use something his character doesn't know, I wouldn't let him do it or i'd give him some exp penalty...and maybe both.

What did he want?
What is the parties Level?
What sre the race/class combos of the party?

Example: The Party is comprised of a Human Cleric, Elf Mage, Dwarf Fighter and a Halfling Rouge and they are all level 20. The Dwarf wants a +20 Soulsucking Axe. The Answer: NO!

This will help us judge the situation. Also what kind of monsters are you fighting? Where are you fighting mostly? Want to kill this guys character because that can be arranged.......

I'm a half-orc barbarian
there is a eleven figther
a human wizard
and a dwarf cleric <--------- it's him

he wanted a great sword the is 2d8 and it had something else that was broken on it i can't remember
and becasue he coul;dn't get it he made a cleric instead of a fighter

i said he if got that i would get a shotgun that when u turn it side ways you get +7 to damage

A greatsword that does 2d8 damage isn't the worst thing in the world, you know. In fact, I'm pretty sure that would be the damage of a greatsword made for a large creature. So if he were to use it, he would take a -2 to all his attack rolls. *shrug* So he's trading 2 on his to-hit roll for an average of 2 points of damage.

Wildonion is right. Slow down there Tarsh and talk to us. Answer us a few questions and we can be a lot more help to you.

1. What is this book that *only he has* called?

2. What other things does the player want apart from the sword?

***

Things you should bear in mind, in bullet points.

1. Your troublesome friend must not spoil the fun of others. If he does, then dont play with him.

2. If you do have a vote system, then he should do what the vote says and so should everyone else.

3. He's not dumb, this troublesome player. By playing the party cleric, he has the power of life and death over everyone else. However, there is nothing stopping other players from taking levels of cleric. Also, if he chooses not to benefit the party by healing you, then you can simply let the monsters eat him.

4. You are not in competition. If he gets a big sword, then he uses it on the monsters. This works to help you and the party. Never feel jealous because another party member has some cool abilities or deals a lot of damage. Unless, of course, the GM doesnt keep up and that player kills everything on his own. Then it is the GM's problem and not the player's.

5. You are a level five party, things only get bigger and wilder from here on out. Dont be surprised if people want a challenge or to go and hunt for specific items that seem quite powerful. Remember, by this point, most people should be nearing spells and attacks that deal pretty big damage compared to the level or two before. The game is changing and the party has crossed a considerable line of toughness.

6. Even the troublesome player doesnt know everything.

7. You GM needs to understand how you all feel. If you are unhappy with this player, then tell the GM. Perhaps he cant act because you have all said nothing. He needs your support and advice as much as you need his decisions and leadership.

8. Some players, like this troublesome fellow, can sometimes be calmed down by getting what they want. Some, however, are never happy and just want more. Has your GM been limiting the game so that there really are no magical items and challenges around? Is the game actually a bit tame and boring? Take a step back and ask why you enjoy it. Can you see that others may not enjoy it as you do?

9. Talk to the troublesome player and see if you can make use of his knowledge. After all, if he is so clever and has this book, then maybe he can suggest some ways that you could do better in the game. He gets excited about things, but things only he knows. Maybe he can be helpful as well as a pain?

10. In the end, if he wants to go get some dangerous and powerful item or ability, then the GM can up the stakes and set out a challenging game where that is available. It is true that the party may get mashed, but a wise GM makes the dungeon so that others are important. After all, a powerful player may be able to kill anything on his own, but when he needs someone else, in a separate room, to press buttons while fighting monsters...then he has to help that other player to succeed or he fails. He must be put in some situations where he realises the value of the party as a whole. D and D is a team game, though there is still room for individual players to shine.

Ummm...did I miss something?

Your party butnut is 20th level, and the rest of you are 5th? What you need is to take your foot, apply it to his posterior in the general direction of the door. If this is a problem due to size, find a bigger foot, have him TCB.

Violence solves everything. :D

I believe the 20th level comment was referring to his "real life" levels in that masked word..... ;)

I beleive that is a PrC in D20 modern.

If not, it should be, I'm pretty sure I'm epic paragon status in that class. :smirk:

Well. even though I'm a 'fireworks' *****, it's good you worked things out. :D

Edit: Didn't think the word would be censored. It sounds like 'horde', if you remove a letter first, and in this context I don't think it's offensive as it's self-descriptive. Pimpin' ain't easy.

Hello, I am the DM of this game and I just want to straighten out a couple things.

For the most part "Tarsh3164" is correct when he says that there is a certain player that is having problems adjusting with the rest of the group, but I really do not feel it is as bad as many of you think it is. Just to clearify a couple things:

When the player who is currently playing the Dwarven Cleric didn't heal "Tarsh3164"'s character it was because he was not playing a cleric at the time, he was playing a Dwarven Fighter and he either 'forgot' he had or wanted to save his healing potions for himself. It was not like he was playing a cleric and refused to heal him.

Also, there was never a chance of him having a weapon that he picked out of the other book because I set a rule that since we were all beginners we were going to try and stick to the core books. I also spoke with a friend who played a lot of D&D back in the day and he said that generally when a player comes to you with a weapon and is like "Can I have a great sword that deals x damage instead?" the answer should be "No." so I trusted my friend since he knew more about these things than I did.

More recently I have decided that it is the players game more so then it is mine. So if they want to come up with items they may, but I decide what level they should be and how they can get them. Nobody starts with specialized weapons, this was "Tarsh3164"'s idea and a very good one at that.

Tarsh - since you're new around here you may not know this. But using "masking" to avoid the filters is a big time no-no around here. For example, using $ in place of S like you've done a few times....

So. What have we learned today class?

Before you air out your gaming issues in a public forum, take the issue to your GM. Especially when he's currently signed in, reading your posts and available by PMessage. If that doesn't culminate in the desired effect then bring it.

I've wasted too many keystrokes on this thread. I feel cheated.
Zherog

We also learned not to mask, because it makes the mods grumpy. And nobody wants grumpy mods. :D

Here's my advice.

1. It's a very good idea to stick to the core books when you are newbies. When I start my campaign, the players will use Player's Handbook ONLY. Then allowing more amd more stuff later, as they gain more experience. (Both as characters and as players - three of my four players are entirely new to pen and paper RPG:s, but they have played some D&D computergames so they know a little bit.)

2. I think voting is a bad idea. The DM should be all-powerful. She shoudl listen to input from teh players and consider it, but always have the final say.

3. If a player acts immaturely (for example doing ingame ******** for real life reasons), then the DM should step in and verbally grab him by the ear. Remind him that even if the character isn't a good-aligned hero, he is still unaware of the player's real life concerns
