| phishhead199107-27-05, 04:59 PM | those of you who have read my posts know that ive only been playing D&D for 3 weeks with two friends and still unsure about things. My question is when battling a player rolls twice each round, once to see if the attack hits and one to inflict damge(is this right?)the DMS GUIDE makes it seem that you roll three times. |
| Asciiman07-27-05, 05:11 PM | Well.... no. Not necessarily. Nothing says you have to attack at all. Wizards and clerics can cast spells and they don't have to roll anything, sometimes just the target of their spells might have to roll a save. If a player runs, pulls out an item, readies an action, then no, the don't have to roll anything either. You only roll to see if you hit if you attack an enemy with melee or ranged combat. If that roll is a sucess, only then would you roll damage. But understand that things like cover and certain spells add in a miss chance that has to be rolled as well. |

| Nurgan_the_drunked07-28-05, 05:06 AM | So magic missle doesnt need a THAC0 roll? No, it hits automatically (at, least in 3.x, but if you're refering to THAC0 you're on a different edition than most of us). Some spells do require a to hit roll, though (e.g. scorching ray) phish, per attack, a player rolls once as an attack to see if he hits. If this is a critical threat, roll to see if it confirms (same attack bonus, see if it hits). Then roll damage. |
| Lord Ian Stark07-28-05, 06:56 AM | So magic missle doesnt need a THAC0 roll? Magic Missile Evocation [Force] Level: Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level) Targets: Up to five creatures, no two of which can be more than 15 ft. apart Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: Yes A missile of magical energy darts forth from your fingertip and strikes its target, dealing 1d4+1 points of force damage. The missile strikes unerringly, even if the target is in melee combat or has less than total cover or total concealment. Specific parts of a creature can’t be singled out. Inanimate objects are not damaged by the spell. For every two caster levels beyond 1st, you gain an additional missile—two at 3rd level, three at 5th, four at 7th, and the maximum of five missiles at 9th level or higher. If you shoot multiple missiles, you can have them strike a single creature or several creatures. A single missile can strike only one creature. You must designate targets before you check for spell resistance or roll damage. Reading is good food. |

As this is obviously a joke, I will reply with, :D . Since even in 2nd edition Magic Missles were an automatic hit spell. If it's not, look here ---> http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35 |
| dsnime07-28-05, 03:23 PM | I've only been playing with the stuff for a week and it doesn't say anything about magic so we treated it like everything else. |
