| Talking_Sword04-10-04, 12:39 PM | Hey everyone, this is my first time posting here, and I have a question about half-dragons. I have a human character who is on the Dragon Disciple prestige class path. If and when he does reach 10th level Dragon Disciple and becomes a half-dragon, does he lose the benefits of being a human, such as the one extra skill point per level? Also, concerning dragons and how long they live, is some of that longevity conferred upon the half-dragon? Thanks for the advice. |
| Seeker9504-10-04, 01:45 PM | 1. No. (edited because Ogre was right and I was wrong.) 2. Once the character gains the dragon type, s/he *is* a dragon. I would let the character's age progression slow to equal that of a dragon, but gain no backwards compatibility. The dragon is adult, and has the remaining years that an adult dragon would normally have for its color. I would place the characters as "equivalent" to 150 years old (the middle of Adult Dragon) and that would leave the character somewhere around another 1000 years of natural lifespan. |
| Majic8604-10-04, 03:18 PM | In the Council of Wyrms Adventure(2e,TSR copyright 1994) Book 1 page 29 it lists a chart (Table 7:Half Dragon Charateristics) with ages. I found it works well with 1/2 human/Dragons but not well with say longer lived creatures like elves, It says half-dragon base age 14 + 1d4 And Race Maximum Middle/Old/Ven. Half-Gold 300+5d10 150/200/300 Half-Silver 250+3d20 125/167/250 Half-Bronze 200+4d10 100/133/200 ...but I prefer using the base demi-human age, then taking the demihuman Middle/old/ven and add some to each one for good measure. |
| Ogre4Hire04-10-04, 08:39 PM | A character that changes type or race due to class effects never lose their racial abilities. A half dragon/half human still has his bonus feat and skill points, so the Human Dragon Disciple would still gain the extra skill point per level after becoming 10th level as a DD and attaining the Dragon type. Note that this is not true if the race/type change is from some other effect, such as a reincarnation spell or one of the Major Change rituals described in Savage Species. |
| Escef04-11-04, 08:05 AM | Ogre is correct. Yes, the caster now has the dragon creature type, but loses none of its human benefits. That is how adding a template works. To say otherwise is like saying that a troll with the half-fiend template loses its regeneration ability because it is no longer a troll. (Coincidentally, never use a half-fiend troll, they are much more powerful than their CR would suggest.) |
