A question about Spell Targets [Archive] - Wizards Community

11-05-06, 02:32 PM If a spell's target is "one humaniod creature" does that mean just humans, elves, dwarves etc... can be the target or can Giant types and Monsterous humanoids also be the target? Example spells would be Enlarge Person and Ghoul Guantlet.

Creatures of type "Humanoid". Not Monstrous Humanoid or Giant.

There are a few exceptions, but their target line is usually "one creature with humanoid physiology," not "humanoid creature".

Whenever a spell says "humanoid" it refers to the creature type, not to just anything that is roughly human in shape. Humanoids include all of the races found in the Players HandBook; various goblinoids (goblins, hobgoblins, bugbears); all of the subraces of elf, dwarf, gnome, halfling; humans, and a few other creatures of the humanoid type. It does not include giants, outsiders (such as demons, devils, angels, etc.), monstrous humanoids (medusa, hag, minotaur, etc.), and so forth.

If in doubt, check with your DM.
