first, the idea since you will get what the question has to do with it

this might have been disscused before (or even been published, if so could someone point it out to me)

a combat system that is a little closer to reality
1. you get a parry bonus that is equal to half your attack bonus, this would replace the AC system (you get hit or you don't)
when attacked you roll an opposing parry check using the parry bonus, if your parry is greater then you deflect the attack

2. Armor would soak up damage, if you get hit in armor it still hurts, damage to you would depend on the armor you have on,the armor would take damage as well(gives a reason for the armorsmithing skill besides just
crafting)

second, where is the vitality system I keep seeing mentioned around the boards?

In the Unearthed Arcana, there are varient rules that present a Vitality system and Armor as Damage Reduction, just like you wanted. ;)

Now, I have seen a d20 system in which you rolled a parry check each round. In that system, there was no static base AC of 10. Instead, you rolled a d20 and added applicable modifiers (Dex bonus, size mod, etc).
Beware, though. This system made melee combat much longer, both in and out of game. Kinda cool for dueling or gladiator style fights.

Firstly, realism and D&D do not mix.

Secondly, your parry system will just slow down play for no real benefit.(I tried a similar one myself for a while).

Third, armor as DR doesn't work too well. AC in normal D&D at higher levels does not protect from the first attack, it protects from the second or third. Given how low many AC's will be with your system the armor would have to prevent 50-100 points a whack to be useful.

And lastly, there is a wound point/vitality point system in the older (non-SAGA) version of Star Wars d20 (don't know about SAGA). You can probably find it in Unearthed Arcana, which is all Open Game Content material. You can find it HERE (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/home.html), just scroll to the bottom and start poking around the Unearthed Arcana section, you'll find it.

I actually use a parry bonus IMC based on 1/2 of BAB rounded down. It's useful to me because my games are lower magic than normal and so the characters may not have magical armour. It works out well.

Go here (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/variantAdventuring.htm).

Yes, it's all 100% legal, and official WotC material.

You can thank me later.
