A question from a new player. [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-22-04, 11:13 AM I just got the Dungeons and Dragons Basic set, and I have a question regarding to the grid where you put your minitures on. When you simulate combat with that grid and putting it on the table won't the players see the layout of the whole dungeon even parts they haven't explored?

Are they supposed to see it or do I have to hide the parts they haven't seen yet and if so are there any easy ways to hide them?

The easiest way to hide things is just not show it to them in the first place. Only set up on the map what they can see.

12-22-04, 11:24 AM Thanks for the welcome, so does this mean I have to have every room drawn separately on a separate grid as well as the grid with all the rooms together for my reference? to simulate combat? Or should I just draw the rooms as my party arrives there?

12-22-04, 11:37 AM Probably the easiest thing to do it is to draw as needed as long as you have a master map for reference. Unless you have the desire and the time to do it ahead of time. It is a game and you need to be having fun also, so do whatever you enjoy doing.

12-22-04, 11:38 AM Only draw in what they know about. Don't draw in sections of the dungeon they haven't seen yet. And don't draw in secret/hidden doors, that's kind of a dead give away that they're there.

12-22-04, 12:24 PM Rodak and Escef are on the right track. I use a battle mat only for combat. And I only draw the area in which combat takes place. Mapping the rest of the dungeon areas that I describe as the party is exploring is left up to the party's mapper.
