| Konzik07-29-04, 04:56 AM | OK, first of all sorry, this surely was clarfied before, but this forum is huge and when I used search option I got like 2000- 35000 (!) threads. I want to ask whether items that increase your casting atribute ( Wisdom, Intelligence, Charisma) also increase your spells per day. for example I play a Cleric ( WIS 16 = +3 ) and I find an item that grants +2 WIS. Does that mean that aside from getting the difficulty to save gainst my spells increased I also get an additional spell per day from 4th level ( as now I have 18 WIS and +4 modifier) Regardles of the answer, if it's possible, please tell me where can I find this rule. My DM insists that he has read somewhere that such items do not modify your spells per day , but he can't tell me where was it written. I think he's wrong, but I may be mistaken |
| Bob Gein07-29-04, 05:27 AM | I think it adds to bonus spells. The Headband of Intellect says you don't gain extra skill points by wearing this item. I assume you gain all other benefits of wearing an Int Wis or Cha item because it doesn't say otherwise. |
| Bait the Bard07-29-04, 06:43 AM | It adds to bonus spells. Unless it says otherwise, it should also affect things like spot checks, etc. |
| Khoomaniac07-29-04, 07:28 AM | It depends on the nature of the stat change. Temporary changes from spells or removable magical items do not change spells. Level related stat changes do change spells. |
| Konzik07-29-04, 07:42 AM | Ok so now we have two possibilities 1. It adds or 2. It does not add Khoomaniac, if you say that, please tell me which book/page it's written that magical items like Cloak of Charisma don't change the number of spells per day. (I know that spells like Owl's Wisdom don't change spells per day). |
| Bait the Bard07-29-04, 08:02 AM | I'm sure an item that remains on for more than 24 hours will provide bonus spells, though I haven't read that section lately. Same for all magicl bonus effects. |
| wizard_thoarin07-29-04, 08:59 AM | Of course, you forget the one blanket rule that does cover this. The DM is always right. Especially since in his world it may not confer the bonus. If you want a by the book Rules Lawyer type answer, I'd do a search in the Sage Advice areas of the website. I'm sure this has come up in a Sage Advice Column sometime in the past. Regards, Wizard Thoarin |
| MrkGrismer07-29-04, 09:12 AM | It was in Sage Advice, as long as the item is worn when resting&preparing spells you recevie the bonus spells as long as the stat remains there (if the 'ring' is removed, they are lost). Note that there are a few items that specifically say you do not get bonus spells from their use. Also note that some things (ie: spell casting prodigy as revised in PGtF) specifically mention no bonus to the DC from the stat boost. Also also note... aaah nothing more, but I just want to put that. :D |
| Khoomaniac07-29-04, 08:53 PM | In the 3.5 Players handbook, look at page 10 under the Changing ability scores section. The last bulleted point makes a point about spells and increasing ability scores. |
| MrkGrismer07-29-04, 11:07 PM | ?? As a character ages, some ability scores go up and others go down. See Table 6-5: Aging Effects (page 109). ?? Howso? ?? |
| Khoomaniac07-29-04, 11:14 PM | Sorry. Next paragraph. My mistake. Same page & section, just the next paragrapgh. |
