Cashban 03-15-06, 09:20 PM	When people say that to me I always point out that Vin Disel plays D&D and he is certainly not a nerd. The reason why people say this is because of Hollywood. They have stereo typed "nerdy" people as playing D&D and video games. Think of prison guards, they got the bad rap from Hollywood too. Or Principles etc etc. Other celebritys jump on the band wagon. Conan O'Brian loves to make fun of people who play D&D. It's a shame but there is not much we can do.

But i dont really think it helps that i dont cut my hair and its almost down to my shoulders. . . What I've had to learn is that I can either spend my time defending myself, laching back and making more people dislike me, or just ignore the people who are too stupid to try to understand things and get on with my own life and make more friends of my own. Needless to say, I just ignore people who are so insecure in themselves that they have to go out of their way to make someone else feel worse. Don't worry man, you're cool as long as at least one other person thinks so too.

Mentar 03-15-06, 09:53 PM	When I started playing back in 86 people considered it a "nerd" game because of two simple facts. 1. It is not physical. (To a jock anything non-physical is nerdy) 2. It requires being able to read, write, and do arithmetic. By 1990 I had met several "jocks" who played or were interested in AD&D, it may never loose the "nerd" image, but as intelligence becomes more important then brute strength games like D&D should prosper.

Geeks: embrace alternative and speculative culture, like fantasy, comics and sci-fi in general. Nerds: Work in highly intellectual circles, computers, classical literature, foreign language, or debate competition. Dork: Someone who is socially inept, may also be termed a doofus, spaz, or weirdo. It is considered a nerd/geek game because it is, you should not run from that fact, but accept it as part of the fabric of reality. THen you must accept that much like intentionally commiting an evil act, playing D&D shifts your alignment one step toward the Geek on the Preppy-neutral-geek scale, and one step toward nerd on the Jock-Neutral-Nerd scale. In the real world there is a third scale the cool-neutral-dork scale. Which is the one that matters the most. I have done to much thinking on this... :P

A LOT OF REALLY GOOD LOOKING CHICKS PLAY D&D!!!!! I mean i have seen some dungeon crawling BABES!!!! And since your average jock type, who has everything God can give a person except the ability for abstract thought, cannot understand why a beautiful woman would rather sit around the table pretending to be great warriors fighting desperate battles against overwhelming odds, with a bunch of skinny smart guys with horned rimmed glasses and pocket protectors, than sit on the jocks lap telling him how handsome he his and fawning over him all the time, and catering to his every whim, they kind of tend to get jealous about it. Hence the ribbing and teasing and razzing, which everyone who has an I.Q. above 30 knows is the crutch of those with ape-like muscles and correspondingly ape-like brains. There, i've said it and it's true. (Disclaimer: Not all people who have muscles are stupid. That is also true.)

One redhead i remember with legs up to her neck, and she knew none of us could keep our eyes off of her and she didn't care. In fact, it seemed to be a source of endless amusement to her. Another hispanic darlin' with long silky black hair and those Marylin Monroe baby makin' hips, ooh la la!!! I'm sitting at a table, and this Flock of Stunningly beautiful Girls walks over, (I'm thinking "Well, looks like they want my table guess I'll have to move...) "Hey you play that Dungeons and Dragons game right?" (Me) "Uh... yeah, why?" "Could you come to my house later, we where all gona hang out, and we thought it might be fun to try something new, can you teach us to play...What, why are you looking at me like that?" (Me again) (internal thoughts) ".... DANGER DANGER TOTAL BRAIN SHUT DOWN IN 5....4.....3...." before said Brain shut down I mumbled yes or somthing, in which case she gave me her number, and directions... I made a few new friends and DMed for a group of Non-nerdy girls, and felt very out of place, as a 15 year old boy in a room of girls who where haveing a wonderful time being Witchs and Pirates, and Amazon Warriors... Yeah that right there makes you wonder if the world has gone Apeshit insane and the fabric of time is unraveling at the seams... For many weeks after this I thought that at any minute the sky whould just explode and rain firey death upon everyone, and when it didn't I came to terms with the fact that the world dosn't make sense and that Girls make less sense and that "Nerd" is a meaningless word, that defines everyone, whos not a Retard... also another "Nerd" steriotype is that people who play don't have Girlfriends/Boyfriends.... wait so let me get this strait.... there are a group of boys and girls in a basment who are not dating anyone, and they are all having a good time, laughing and playing.... Yeah... that sounds like Ohhh I don't know potential Date material right there... plus most people I play with (The people in my Drama/Theatre Group) all have a significant other that more otfen than not plays with us... so yeah, If D&D is a "Nerd" game so be it... if you make fun of people smarter than you, well thats kinda stupid... Leap_UK 03-16-06, 06:03 AM	"Nerd" is an insult waved around by the scared and the thick....and aimed at someone who actually still has an imagination and more than double digit IQ :) Yes the game does tend to attract: * skinny, wimpy, pale, runs-from-a-butterfly types * overweight, greasy, unwashed, black t-shirt clad guys who would do with adding to gilletes profits a little but hey, they aint the norm and so long as they can carry their dice bag / wash before games no problem :) *runs and hides* :devil:

In high school, I was the penultimate jock (sort of): kicker on the football team, winger on the hockey team, pitcher for the baseball team, and goalkeeper for the soccer team. It blew my friends/teammates' minds that not only was I a player of this "nerdy" game, and not only was I was an active enthusiast of the fantasy genre and roleplaying, I was a dungeon master. I remember one of the receivers on the football team walked up to me one day and said, "So, you're a... dungeon master... what's that? Do you like, uh, yeah, build, um, dungeons and stuff?" I gave him a funny look, said nothing, and resumed kicking field goals (and missing most of them because I sucked). Stranger thing is, when I got to college I stopped playing most of my sports, and I went and joined the marching band.

Important thing i learned from DnD: Never drink something that requires a Fortitude save. Regardless, we people of intellect often appear to be of the "nerd" persuasion. One bloke i play with won't talk about DnD at school 'cause he "Wants to fit in". You're a proper nerd when you stop trying. Or summink. No-one has ever accused me of being a nerd. Hippie, yes(The irony of that is staggering, a bit like saying to a K.K.K member that he's black). People think i'm a goth (Gods know how they got to that conclusion), but not Nerd. We are an isiolated, little understood group of people who aren't really understood. Only, instead of listening to Death Metal and slitting our wrists(If you do that though, thats cool. Knew a lovely Lass who did that. oh, how i miss her) we go do nerdish things. Different things. Hope it helped, or at least confused you enough that you find it a work of genius(It is).
Seeker95 03-16-06, 09:19 AM	It *is* a nerd game. You just don't have to be a nerd to play it. I've been to a convention or two in the 28 years I've played D&D. I've been to the gaming stores on D&D night. The non-D&D-related social skills of the *majority* of those you see in such settings are practically non-existent. These guys (and some gals) can spout off the memorized stats of any half-this/half-that, multi-classed, X-point buy advanced creature in just about any supplement. But don't try to talk to them about March Madness, clothing trends, or hot spots for a date. Don't ask them what their favorite deoderant is, what shampoo is best for normal-to-oily hair, or how the local college sports team is doing this season. These guys (and occasionally gals) are the front line face of D&D. These are the ones that get noticed as playing D&D. They are the ones who get interviewed when the local news team picks up the wire feed about D&D having a 30th anniversary. They are the ones who end up on Beauty and the Geek with the title of Dungeon Master. These are the ones your older sister is afraid you are going to be like (or convinced that you already are). Just as some of you found it easy to label D&D as a "not-jock" game requiring intelligence (implying that jocks don't have intelligence), the stereoytpe of D&D is set. It is a nerd game, no matter how many non-nerds play it. Just like football is a game for big dumb brutes, no matter how many intelligent folks choose to play it. If the above descriptions fit you, I am sorry for you. But keep having fun with D&D. It is something you and I have in common. If the above descriptions do not fit you, then just accept that you are a non-nerd in a nerd game. It doesn't make the game any less fun.

But thanks to the growing popularity (credited in the largest part to 3.0 which opened the game to people without a PhD in calculus :D ) the social stigma of playing D&D has greatly lessened. I've found that few people care that Vin Diesel plays (awesome as it may be. I bet he'd join my game) however what I have noticed is that since my friend and I stopped dressing all in black, adorned with spikes and chains (as many gamers in my area are wont to do) and adopted a more mature, fashionable style of dress (the two best dressed geeks in Southern New Hampshire as far as I can tell :cool: ) people, when they find out we play D&D, dont laugh as much as they used to, and actually ask more questions about the game. Heh, the funniest thing about it is the average reaction. Random dude: YOU play D&D? Me: Yep. So does he. Random other dude: WHAT?!... Well...what do you do?

EDIT- Oh, and geeks are people who bite off chicken heads at the circus. Last time I checked, that wasn't a common occurrence at the gaming table.
arjomanes 03-16-06, 10:42 AM	I'm lucky in that I work at a place where nerds and geeks are the norm, rather than the exception. About half the graphic designers I work with played D&D or some other rpg in high school or college, and some still do. And those who haven't played are a little curious, or at least accepting of the hobby. It was the same in college; nearly all the art students were familiar with D&D and other nerd/geek interests. My current gaming group is composed of local Minneapolis artists and musicians (and one electrician), half of whom work at the local modern art museum. And several people I've known who I wouldn't characterize as geeks or nerds, including a guy who's a black belt and teaches karate and a girl who's a tournament kick boxer, play D&D. It's a game that anyone interested in fantasy/sf, board games, video games, reading, etc might be interested in. Sure D&D's got a bit of a geek/nerd stigma, just like skateboarding has a slacker/stoner stigma and football has a jock/neanderthal stigma. All these stereotypes are true to a certain extent, but they cannot possibly be the norm. And Conan O'Brien pokes fun at geeks and nerds because his whole show is about nerd culture. With the popularity of alt music and geeky shows like Conan, it's more acceptable being a nerd now than it ever has. Embrace it.

I remember more than a few times being called a nerd, or more often a geek. I generally don't care, because I actually have a good reason for 90% of the things I do, most of them don't. Generally I hang out with the group that is "Geeky" and "Nerdy" at my school. We started a club called L.A.G. (Local Area Geeks) which is in fact a geek joke in and of itself. But we are also the only group in school with three people starting a business and three enrolled in college at 11th grade. To almost-quote bill gates "You have to be careful who you call a nerd, because you will probably end up working for them or using something they made" and it's very true. To bring this back to a "Is DnD nerdy?" post, I would say that it in and of itself isn't nerdy, or geeky, but yet, it is of a genre that attracts nerds and geeks to play it, that said, if you play DnD or others call you something it doesn't make you that, unless you see yourself as that. Personally, I'm a geek and proud of it!

Personally I blame it all on the movie. :D I started playing AD&D in college. When I saw the movie I wanted to have them pass a law requiring you to be at least 18 years old before you could play the game. I mean how can kids effectively play this wonderful intellectual persuit of role playing? Recently I've been thinking about raising the minimum age to 40. :P Or married. Although this 44 year old male would be prohibited from playing. :(

Only no one really cares about it unless they themselves play/want to play/are wondering what you're reading once you get past being a Freshman. However, some people never get past being one, so your mileage may vary. Just don't buy one of those cars with the horribly gas mileage.

While that's true (and, of course, the converse is true as well), y'all want to know where I found the most girls? I'll tell you. Ready? LARP. Seriously. I've gamed with more women in various LARPs than I've ever gamed with at a table. Now, mind you, this only goes for MET games - but I've seen a video or two of "boffer" LARPs like NERO and whatnot, and it seems like they have a good number of women as well. C'mon how could a game where people hide away for weekends while rolling dice and pretend to be wizards not be considered anything but geeky? of course not everyone who games is a geek and I still love this game (despite 'retiring' for 10 years) but it certainly does knock you a few notches down the "cool totem pole" :D on the topic of attractive women playing RPGs; I think its just a case of the standard being low that an average looking person gets raised to the level of a hottie. of course computer RPGs (especially console ones) are becoming increasingly popular among girls, especially in places like Japan. However pen-and-paper gamers still tend to be a scary bunch in general :cool:

Sure, gamers are their own breed of people who have personality differences, but they aren't antisocial people who sit in closets and caves preparing for the next week's session. (Speaking of which, I am now tempted to prepare the next adventure I DM in a cave. :P ) People think it's nerdy because not many popular people play it and you have to be literate and fairly good with numbers. Really, it's not as nerdy as people joke. (It's nerdy, I must admit, but not really nerdy compared to what else you can do on a Saturday night.) On another note, don't always expect people to think it nerdy. In school I was referencing Monty Python and the Holy Grail when a lot of people (boys and girls) were agreeing that it was a really great movie. Jocks, nerds, preps (all labels that really aren't that nice, but oh well), all social categories can enjoy things...even D&D.

Besides, I don't go out of my way to point out that religion, for all the good it does, is only one more line that sewperates and is merely a tool for the powerfull to excuse shamefull acts (no matter how good it may be, it will always be used shallowly by onbe individual) or to point out that the only real thing that "proffessional" sports does for the US is to further widen wealth gap of this sad and broken nation. :rant: But I've been ranting. Anyway, my pointy is that it's not the jock that makes D&D a nerd game. It's you saying that it's a nerd game that makes it one, after all, you play it. Note: I'm curious about something. I have this gift where, no matter what someone does to **** me off, when i get home, I've completely forgotten my anger and am happily doing what i please without wasting my time hating those who waste my time with their trite comments. Does anyone else have this gift? PS. I'm sorry if I've offended anyone, but i wasn't being serious. that was just ranting.

Appearently the Gods of D&D are shining their holy light down upon you. What did you do to please the Gods so? The average charisma of the women I have played with is about 8. Nah can't be the case I have a team of 8 players 5 are in fact well off intelligent, females, i'll not insert the usual lingo here cause you all can imput what you will. Guess I'm lucky but I find that it's true. nerd maybe but there are a few female's out there that do value literacy and a sharp intellect hell most of the guys on the team nearly died since i had an all girl team before the guys joined needless to say it was awkward as they were my friends and i kinda forgot to mention that fact that and one of em's my girlfriend and we kinda hid that. ( the look on their faces was priceless gotta say think :OMG! ) I practically had to kick em out of my house when the session was over they would not stop groveling at my chairs edge. i was kinda funny really. guess I'm lucky but I wish you all the chance to meet and have a felame grace your table specially one whos average stats are in the double digits. it's a funny issue cause i never thought of the game in that way then again i'd rather have an intelligent discussion then act within the social norm anyday so if thats a Nerd welp sign me up cause I'm a big time one but a big time one with a great D and D team and a damn intelligent Girl at my side Yay for Nerds!

What is wrong with exploring your adventurous side through a game of creative details and strategy. The same is true of Axis and Allies, Stratego, and even Chess! The truth is that most people don't want to take the time to plan and create an interesting character. They would just rather push a button on a computer or video game and play the same boring thing over and over, replicating moves and scenarios that won't even get D&D gamers to spend a quarter or waste a token in an arcade environment. We are creative thinkers! Go Nerds!

Besides, chicks dig a guy who knows the difference from a Greatsword and a Bastard Sword and develops his mathematical skills for fun.
