A small problem [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-20-05, 02:00 AM i am in a campaine now where i am a 3rd lvl rouge and i just got hired by the maine city in the kingdom, and i work for the government as a member of the spy/protectors of the kingdom . (not the problem) the problem is how do i go about practicing my rouge skills when i cant steal from my kindome without the leader of the spy/protector knowing ( he watches me close and is at least 15th lvl)?

12-20-05, 03:10 AM Umm... you're still going to be using your skills to accomplish goals while on adventures or spy missions, aren't you? What's the problem here?

You tell your DM to stop being a goof. This sounds to me like you DM meta-playing to curtail you from playing your PC properly or effectively - n other words it's a load of crap.

No important 15th level character - especially one in charge of the entire kingdom's spy and espionage agency - is going to spend his time babysitting some low level flunky. That is patently ludicrous. It's like the head of the CIA spending all his time doing ride-alongs with a security guard. Pure bunk.

12-20-05, 12:02 PM Rogue (or rouge) doesn't equal thief. They just focus on skills rather than combat and know how to hit where it hurts. It's entirely possible to play a rogue with no ranks in Slight of Hind, Hide, or Move Silently (Although those usualy bennifit a spy) so don't think of it so much as being restricted in one ability, but able to expand in others.

12-20-05, 12:15 PM James Bond is a rogue, but he doesn't steal fro Her Majesty's Service. He might bend the rules a little bit, and has no problems stealing from the bad guys.

That's how you should play your rogue, not as a stinking thief, unless you're NE/CE alignment of course, but then expect to be caught and put in jail/beheaded some time in the future.

My advice: play James Bond: Lot's of Bluff, Diplomacy, Sleight of Hand, Move Silent, Hide, and the occasional Sneak Attack.

Rogue not = thief.

oh and the thing about the 15 lvl guy watching me close is that the 2nd night i was in this town i broke into his house and stole a bunch of stuff lol :D ( not knowing who he was). He then broke into my inroom slit the throughts of the 2 chicks i was with when i went to get some ale. i came back in the room and i was like WTF, so i got a gaurd and when he looked out the window a massive explostion went off and destroyed the entire building :P (my DM is a real pyro)

Said leader of the intelligence apparatus managed to track you down but instead of bringing you to justice or even punishing you himself, he kills a couple of wenches and blows up the inn you're staying at (while you're not in it, apparently).

Following all of this mayhem, he hires you for his organization which is in charge of protecting the kingdom.

Does this make any sense to anyone here?

Couldn't you just..... I don't know.... do what you were hired to do? And seek out OTHER "rouges" that are trying to sneak into the city and steal "stuff"?

Do you not have a party? What are THEY doing?

well the king is the one that told the guy to hire me since i managed to avoid being killed hehe. the king then sent me on a mission to the enemy kingdom to get kill a few gaurds and bring back a pice of armor with there symbol on it as my initiation.

and no atm i have no party. its just a small game with me and the DM, but are curantly looking for more players( not many gamers in SWflorida)

But on the off chance that this is not a gag, I'd have to say go with whatever floats your stones, man. The lack of "fantasy realism," logic, and common sense isn't really my bag, but for some folks it seems entertaining enough.

Which is, after all, what the game is really about, keeping the folks playing as entertained as possible.

So on that note, you probably know your DM better than any of us, and without some logical thought process to base our advice on, anything we can tell you to answer your question is likely to end in an awful mess.

First of all its not a gag, and i have been bad at spelling all my life. i dont really see how you think i spelled my last name wrong, its not based off the guy from escape from LA/New York. i made up this name long befor i ever herd of those movies.

maybe im not explaining the situation right but whatever. all i asked for is a lil advice and all i get is a bunch a crap from ppl, so im not the smartest person ever and not the gratest speller in the world. so what! you think your perfict?

me and my friends dont play conventional D&D. we make our own rules to conform to the game. Besides i dont play D&D to do the same thing as everyone els who plays, i play to have fun and to do things a lil diff then the norm. i play how i want to play and do things my way.

me and my friends dont play conventional D&D. we make our own rules to conform to the game. Besides i dont play D&D to do the same thing as everyone els who plays, i play to have fun and to do things a lil diff then the norm. i play how i want to play and do things my way.
Let me get this straight. You're not playing by the rules in the first place, you make stuff up as you go along in the interest of what is fun for you, am I right so far?

Then you want people here, who play by the rules (because it's the only commonality we have, being an internet community dedicated to a roleplaying game), to give you advice, right?

And you're wondering why you've gotten the responses you've gotten so far?

Back to the unanswered section. I agree, you're not. For that matter, neither am I -- Stephen Hawking (http://www.hawking.org.uk/) and Anurag Kashyap of Poway, California (http://www.factmonster.com/spot/spellingbee1.html) however, probably fit the bill for what you're looking for there.

The difference is, I've made a conscious effort to be clear in my communication and provide the best answer possible to your question in a clear and civilized manner.

Further, I reserve & will exercise the right to post my opinion so long as it does not violate the CoC. As will everyone else in the online community, and there's really nothing you can do to prevent it, so you'll either need to accept it, ignore it, argue it, or in some other way, deal with it -- within the rules of the board.

Now, with that being said, there's nothing wrong with playing by whatever rules you choose to -- whatever rocks your casbah -- but you can't seriously be surprised when people go :uh-huh: or :looloo: when you ask for advice on whatever you are playing.

I'm pretty sure I've already said something to that affect...ah, the acoustics.
