I am DMing a campaign that has a villain who's name is the Dark Lobster, who is a large, mutated lobster of great intelligence. He has many mutated minions to serve him, but I didn't want to make each individual creature, so I created the Mutated template. Any feedback I can get would be great, as well as additions to the template. I don't really know how to display this, so here it is.

Most mutated creatures should have ability scores changed, so I think this:

Roll 1d6 to determine the number of ability scores changed

Pick your ability scores, and half of them gain +1d6 to the score and half lose -1d6 to the ability score

Roll 1d6 to determine how much the score is changed
-------------------------------------------------------------
Roll d% to determine a "Normal" mutation, listed here

(does anyone know how to figure our how to assigne percantages to these?)
Size increases 1 step (i.e. Medium to Large)
Size decreases 1 step (i.e. Medium to Small)
Grow 1d3 extra arms
Grow 1d3 extra legs
Grow 1d3 extra heads
Increase in natural damage by 1 step (i.e. 1d4 to 1d6)
Longer legs/fins/whatever (+10 speed)
Grow wings
Extend reach by +10ft.
Grow poisonous fangs (poison: contact, 1d3/1d3 Str?)
Roll again twice
Roll again three times
Roll again four times
Pick one ability from the "Special" mutations list

And here is the "Special" abilities list (roll d%)

Random breath weapon
Blood Drain
Antimagic Aura
Spell-like Ability
Damage Reduction
Spell Resistance
X-ray Vision

That's all I have out now, so go ahead and look it over.

This actually should go on the Monsters forum.

The judge Dredd RPG has a mutant template but I don't know how much I can tell you without braking cr. Just give climb speeds, special qualities, bonus feats, low level SLAs and ability increases/decreases.

There's a 'monstrous' template in Savage Species that makes for awesome, comic book-style mutants.

I'm not sure having the (random) ability score changes independent of the physical mutations is a good idea - you could end up with some illogical combinations (even mutants need to have a level of internal consistency). I would just have a mutations table with the results granting relevant stat changes (good and/or bad) - e.g. An extra head might boost Int but lower Wis, Armoured Skin granting natural armour but lowering Dex, that kind of thing.

At risk of promoting the competition :) , the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay system is good for this kind of thing (certainly the original version and I assume the new one too). You might be able to find some inspiration material on the net.

Hey, I got some replies!:w00t:

I don't know if the Judge Dredd RPG would work, I'm going for more authentic D&D. I'll tke a look at the Savage Species if I can get my hands on one, thanks for the tip Jayr. I don't really know much about Warhammer, other than you use miniatures and kill stuff and roll lots of d6's. I've posted the same thread in the Monsters forum, so if I don't get back to anyone right away itt may be because I'm doing stuff with that.

Try using the table for random Slaad mutations, wherever that is.

Im glad to see your thoughts are not being shot down, As I would have thought at least someone would have tried :P

Anyway, Why dont you do a number of seperate tables.

Some thing like 0-2 Major Mutations (that being a d3 where 3 = 0)
1d6+1 Minor

Then you have say:

Fast-
Strong-
Tough-
Smart-
Ability-
Perception-

Say have them assigned to two of thoose (Again can be randomly generated).

THen you can give a list of abilities something like:

Fast-
Major:
Wings- 90ft Fly speed (Perfect)
Fins and Gills - Can breath underwater and gains 60ft Swim Speed
Digger- gains tunneling claws, 30ft burrow speed

THen minor could be speed increases.

Ability-
Spell like abilities and the like. Basicly anything that doesnt fit in the others.

Perception-
Darkvision, Lowlight vision, blind sight, thermo vision (Yes i know there are no rules for it), Tremor sense, Divinations etc.

Its all about organization with things like this.
