IMG we have a fixed schedule and lately I (DM) have had to cancel at least once a week (we play twice a week) for the past few weeks. It just happens that for a few weeks, things go awry and then in a few weeks things are back to normal. Whenever I cancel as DM I give everyone 500xp, not much but its my way of saying sorry. Now if a player cancels I will probably run a session, but if enough key ones are out then either I cancel or play a one-shot of some sort, usually something sci-fi to be different from D&D. I have premade characters I email them to everyone and off we go. You could even do a boardgame with the few that show. Like I said though fixed schedule is the key. |

We had a problem with scheduling. Ironically, those most verbal about whining about when we were going to get together usually were the ones changing, rescheduling, procrastinating, and showing up late or leaving early. It didn't help that we gained two new players with their own scheduling problems. This went on for a long, frustrating time, and was one of the reasons I finally said "enough!" and put the kabosh on a seven-year-long campaign. Miffs me because those who ruined it were the newbs, for the most part. The two easiest to work with are the two who had been in the game longest. Thanks for wrecking it, newbies. Anyway, now we have a fixed game every Tuesday night, but only with the three of us, and we have not yet picked up the older campaign where we left off. I'll have to work something out. So, I agree: fixed schedule. But! You might have to be prepared to lose somebody in the process. |
| Draco Strang09-27-05, 04:16 PM | Fixed schedule all the way. Try to find a slot of "dead time" that everyone has free. Sunday afternoons and late Friday nights are usually very good for this, assuming no one has work then. It's like going to class or a job. You just agree to be there, and then you do it. It sounds easy, and it is easy. |
