After seeing some of the disatorus mistakes made by rookie dm's I thought I'd share one of my tricks. In my group we regularly rotate DM duty, however we don't rotate campains. To solve the former DM not having a PC issue we make the current DM's PC an NPC. When he returns to player status the NPC becomes a PC once again. Now this means a little more work for the current DM but it poses several distinct advantages. First off having an inside man in the party gives him a mouth with which to role-play the dropping of hints and suggestions. If the party is headed for certain disaster the NPC can say "NO I won't do that". It also let's the DM round out an unbalanced party. Also it poses an obvious choice of victem for any sort of Doppelganger scenario.

Remeber your job as DM is not to "beat" the PCs. It's to create fun challenges for them to overcome. If your player's characters die on a regular basis you are doing something wrong. I hope this helps some of you rookie DM's out there.
