Ok, I've seen people on the board refer to a "standard" set of numbers, and an "elite" set of numbers. My question is this:

What set of numbers is defined as each set of ability scores?

Also, is there anywhere that has a good explanation of the point buy system?

The DMG, on the first page of the chapter titled Characters, has a description of the point buy system. As for elite and standard arrays, they just refer to the power level associated with certain groups of ability scores. I don't know what the exact numbers are though.

Elite is the 15/14/13/12/10/8. I forget what normal is. I think it's the 10/10/10/11/11/11 option that all monsters published by default use. Elite adds 1 to their CR.

Elite only add 1 to their CR if thay have nothing but NPC classes or no classes at all. As soon as you give a creature a PC class level, you've assumed to be using the elite array.

So, does that mean a troll with one level of fighter and elite array has the same +1 to CR as a troll with just the elite array? According to the rules, it does. So don't use the elite array for anything that doesn't have PC classes.

Oh, and there's also the nonelite array for NPCs and monsters without class levels. It goes 13/12/11/10/9/8. Same total modifier as the base stats, but allows a bit of customization.
