| yuna000000003-02-07, 03:05 AM | What happens if someone has a AC of over 20? how does a monster hit that person? the d20 only goes up to 20.... and the Players handbook v3.5 doesnt cover that. |
| Solaris03-02-07, 03:10 AM | Typically one adds one's BAB and other bonuses to the d20 roll... |
| yuna000000003-02-07, 03:12 AM | so if a monster has a bab of +2 and rolls a 20 and the players ac is 23, the gob is screwed cuzz it can't hit the player? |
| gimby03-02-07, 03:13 AM | From the SRD: Automatic Misses and Hits A natural 1 (the d20 comes up 1) on an attack roll is always a miss. A natural 20 (the d20 comes up 20) is always a hit. A natural 20 is also a threat—a possible critical hit. Tadaa! |
| yuna000000003-02-07, 03:15 AM | So the dm must roll a 20 in order to hit a player with an ac of 20+ if the bab isent high enough...thanks alot for the info. |
| KurenaiYami03-02-07, 03:26 AM | So the dm must roll a 20 in order to hit a player with an ac of 20+ if the bab isent high enough...thanks alot for the info. It's 1d20 + Attack Bonus to hit AC. Attack bonus is more than just the Base Attack Bonus. You also add Strength if it's a melee attack or Dexterity if it's a ranged attack, along with other modifiers that are out there (masterwork weapons, magic weapons, spell effects, feats, etc.) |
| gimby03-02-07, 03:49 AM | Considering this a little more closely: A goblin has an attack routine of: Morningstar +2 melee (1d6) or javelin +3 ranged (1d4) so to hit our hypothetical 23 AC character you will need to roll a 20 either way. However, goblins are CR 1/3 creatures - by second level (the earliest you could reasonably reach such high ACs) you will probably be either fighting a number of these guys (so you have more chances to get that 20) or more powerful creatures - a typical CR 2 "bruiser" would be the bugbear, with an attack routine of: Morningstar +5 melee (1d8+2) or javelin +3 ranged (1d6+2) So would hit your tank on an 18+ with that morningstar. Not teriffically likely, but this chap has probably optimised for defense to such an extent they will have issues actually achieving anything significant in combat. Hope that helps! |
