| Vyctavyre04-05-06, 02:35 PM | Can somone give me an example of a Gnome accent? I play D&D as a gnome in our new story. We want to start RP and I do not think I have ever heard a gnome accent. THough it may help me and my friends if somone could help me with the accents of humans, dwarves, elves, halflings and the sort of any time period. Not D20 Modern any time period that still used medival weopanry. |
| Seeker9504-05-06, 03:16 PM | I would say: "Excuse me, miss. Could you tell me how to get to the constable's office?" A gnome saying the same thing would sound different: "Excuse me, miss. Could you tell me how to get to the constable's office?" Written text is not a suitable medium for the expression of accents. :D |
| Vyctavyre04-05-06, 03:32 PM | Yea, that is true. Though could you tell me how the accents work? How they pronounce words and their vowles. They have high voices ofcourse. Though do they talk with alot of big words? Do they use big words? Let me go ahead and lay down some facts about my char. He is a gnome thief grew up in the city. He is part of the middle class. He is now an adventurer. An acrobat. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht04-05-06, 03:48 PM | Depends on the campaign world, since, you know, gnomes do not actually exist. |
| Vyctavyre04-05-06, 03:50 PM | Ebberon. |
| Aliquid04-05-06, 03:51 PM | gnomes do not actually exist.Lies! |
| Bruunwald04-05-06, 03:59 PM | Whenever I think of gnomes, I imagine the voice of the late great Billy Barty, a little person of large stature who played in a lot of movies over many years. Specifically, I think of his voice in the not-so-great, but not-bad movie Willow, where he played the High Aldwin. |
| ShumpDragonbane04-05-06, 05:22 PM | have you played the champions return to arms game? the second level is gnomes go there and check it out |
| Icosahedron04-05-06, 06:05 PM | http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a358/BlueSimian/Gnome_web.jpg Only gnome I've ever heard. |
| Rickiel04-05-06, 06:09 PM | According to a couple of pals of mine, all gnomes have snotty french accents. Not just any french accents now...SNOTTY, french accents! |
| DDogwood04-05-06, 06:12 PM | Depends on the campaign world, since, you know, gnomes do not actually exist. I have a number of stout fellows with tall red hats in my garden who would beg to differ. On the other hand, these diminutive gents tend to be taciturn, so I can't honestly say what a Gnome accent sounds like. I second Bruunwald's "Billy Barty" suggestion, although you could have a lot of fun exploring the options. For example, what if Gnomes spoke in Haitian accents? Take a look at The Dialectizer (http://rinkworks.com/dialect/) for some ideas. For example, using Seeker95's line: English: "Excuse me, miss. Could you tell me how to get to the constable's office?" Redneck: "Excuse me, miss. C'd yo' tell me how t'git t'th' constable's office?" Cockney: "Excuse me, miss. Could yer tell me 'ow ter get ter the constable's office?" Hacker: exCus3 me, miuss COULD U TELL ME HOW TO GET To TEH CONST4BLE"S OFIC???????????? ' Personally, I suspect Gnomes actually speak Hacker. |
| Silver Ghost04-05-06, 06:23 PM | Gnome's in my campaign world have the following accent: Grasp your nostrils between your thumb and forefinger and clasp them shut. Now in your highest pitch voice, speak aloud. Nasally and annoying isn't it? ....there aren't a lot of prominent gnomes in my campaign.... ;) |
| Chrono Nexus04-05-06, 06:43 PM | English: "Excuse me, miss. Could you tell me how to get to the constable's office?" Gnome: "-excusememissCouldyoutellmehowtogettothec onstable'soffice?thankyouIwouldappreciat ethehelpyouseemypartyandIareverylostandc ouldusedirectionstogetthere." |

| celtredleg04-05-06, 08:36 PM | Like the muchkins from the lolipop guild at the start of the wizard of OZ. As you asked for other races, my dwarfs speak with a harsh scotish accent, drink highland whiskey and play bagpipes. Not everyone agrees of course. |
| Andrew_98004-06-06, 12:59 AM | I have seen dwarves as scotts almost all the time. I have used arabic and spanish accents for gnomes in the past |
| WhiteHarness04-06-06, 02:18 AM | The Norse were undeniably the primary influence on the culture of D&D Dwarves. I don't see how Scots enter into the equation at all. |
| Darth Syntax04-06-06, 02:56 AM | In my eberron campaign the Zil (the national-gnomes) sound vaguely greek (this is based of a history professor I know who just seems very gnomish to me, gregarious, odd, cynical, and devious) whereas gnomes from elsewhere, say breland, have local accents. For the other cultures i have used a wide variety of accents. Aereni: Something like a cross between a japanese buisnessman and someone from the north of India. This ends up sounding a bit like doing a ben kingsly imitation while trying to be Kobyashi (the spelling is probably wrong here) from The Usual Suspects Brels: Varrious commonweath and brittish accents. The common dialect of sharn is something like cockney, although the Dura accents are the thickest. Wroatish accents sound something like Clive Owen (in gosford park) and northern Breland has a mix of wroatish style, only less throaty, and something like a belfast accent. Northwestern brels sound a bit like they are from New Zealand. Karrnath: A variety of Slavic, generalized Balkan, Iranian, Turkic, and germanic accents. The people of Karrlakton sound a bit like they are Croatian, the Rekkenmarkers sound like Danes(except the cannot say the "ch" sound as in church, it comes out shursh), people from Korth sound a bit like they are from Prague, Aturans are somewhere between Russian and Turkish (which sadly i cant really describe very well but it sounds interesting) Vedykarans have heavy Turkic accents (influence from the halflings) and there are lots of very small regional accents. The village of Ice for example sounds a bit like they are speaking middle english. Aundair: French and Spanish accents. Fairhaven has a Parisian accent, Passage a bit more like the accents in the south of france and farther west they sound spanish. Thrane: In the east the Thanish sound much like their Aundairan neighbors but as one goes further west they begin to sound like the offspring of irish people that spent too much time in barcelona. These are just some examples (based mostly on accents i have some familiarity in imitating) of what i do in my games. |
