| HarmMaster200409-06-04, 12:02 PM | Folks, See if you can settle this dispute. In the glossary of the PHB, under regeneration, the entry reads something like, 'typically, fire and acid damage isn't regenerated.' That's true for trolls; it says so under the description of troll regeneration as an extraordinary ability. But what about the spell? The spell regenerate, and items or spell-like abilities that duplicate the spell operate normally against all types of damage, because I'm not seeing where it says, 'damage type X does not regenerate' under the spell description. My position is that, all other things being equal, regenerate will heal and such against all damage types. My friend thinks that fire and acid and whatever else defeats (Ex) regenerate will also defeat the spell. Who is right? |

After the spell is cast, the physical regeneration is complete in 1 round if the severed members are present and touching the creature. It takes 2d10 rounds otherwise. Regenerate also cures 4d8 points of damage +1 point per caster level (maximum +35), rids the subject of exhaustion and/or fatigue, and eliminates all nonlethal damage the subject has taken. It has no effect on nonliving creatures (including undead). Likewise, the Ring of Regeneration doesn't grant the ability (it just heals damage, it doesn't convert all damage to subdual). |

However note that the Tarrasque have the Regeneration quality but doesn't have any special limits for it. From the SRD: Regeneration (Ex): No form of attack deals lethal damage to the tarrasque |

| ThoughtfulOwl09-07-04, 02:46 PM | Ok, so who is right? Can you regenerate fire and acid using the regenerate spell? You can heal fire and acid using the regenerate spell (the 4d8+1/lvl points of damage healed by the spell). As I said, the ability and the spell don't share anything but the name. The regeneration ability is very specific: 1) All damage except those types that bypass the ability is applied as subdual damage, no matter whether it was lethal or subdual. 2) All subdual damage is healed at the given rate per round. Point (1) kicks in right before damage is suffered, and relies on point (2) to scoop up the mess afterwards. The regenerate spell isn't even an ongoing effect (instantaneous duration); it merely heals wounds afterward, no matter the source. The ring of regeneration is more similar to a slowed down fast heal ability; it doesn't convert regular damage to subdual, nor it heals only subdual damage. Instead, it heals both subdual and lethal damage after it has been inflicted. This should give you food for thought. :D |
