AD&D 2nd Edition Question [Archive] - Wizards Community

10-12-04, 12:01 PM The last time I played AD&D was about 5 years ago using the 2nd edition books and FR & Ravenloft campaigns.

So my questions are: Where can I get the last versions of AD&D? I'm having trouble finding anything about it on the WOTC website. Did it get combined with regular D&D?

Sorry if these questions sound dumb, but I've been out of RP'ing so long I'm a f'ing newbie again. :eek:

10-12-04, 12:13 PM They took the word "Advanced" out of the title. It is simply called Dungeons & Dragons now. The latest edition of the D&D/AD&D game is now called Dungeons and Dragons 3.5.

I thought at the time AD&D 2E was the current version, that the difference between D&D and AD&D was D&D had simpler rules and you used minatures alot and with AD&D you had more complex rules, a bigger scope for imagination and didn't use minatures very much if at all?

Has changing AD&D to just D&D mushed the two together at all? :mymy:

10-12-04, 12:35 PM What is now D&D is just the latest edition of AD&D (although not compatible with 1st and 2nd editions, despite evolving from them and having many similarities). There is no separate "simpler" game, which is why "Advanced" was dropped.

And yes, it heavily uses minatures for combat (although any sort of counters will do). I personally like the use of minatures, but you could ask people on these boards how one might play without them.

So yes, to play the latest edition of the game, pick up the revised (version 3.5) copies of the Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual, and you're good to go.

Though not technically AD&D but Green Ronin Publishing is coming out with Advanced Player's Handbook, Advanced Gamemaster's Guide, and (now available!) Advanced Bestiary.

Confusion aside, they dropped the "Advanced" word from the title and game. It is now simply called Dungeons & Dragons.
