my group has been playing 1st and 2nd editions for YEARS, and we want to start 3.0 or 3.5. however, we want to keep the campaign going (characters, places, monsters, etc.). is there a conversion chart available? if so, where?

Don't use a conversion chart for 2e to 3e. Convert on the basis of concept instead. If you are a 6th level party of a ranger, barbarian, cleric and thief-acrobat, make a 6th level ranger, 6th level barbarian, 6th level cleric and 6th level rogue with Tumbling maxed out. Stats can translate easily enough except for percentage strength.

You have to work it out for yourselves. The stuff published from Wizards is wildly off the mark. A 1st Ed 10th level MU took many times the adventuring to obtain when compared to a 10th level wizard in 3rd Ed. You have to break down by XP and convert that way.

Kursk is damn right. You can get to level 10 very quickly now.

Hmm, well for XP comparisons...approximations...

Fighter to 9th level in 2e = 250,000 XP

Fighter to 9th level in 3.5 = 36,000XP

253,000 XP = 23rd level fighter in 3e.

An 11th level M-U in 2e = 375,000 XP

An 11th level M-U in 3.5 = 55,000 XP

Now my math starts to get fuzzy adding off the top of my head but I think

379,000 XP (or somewhere around 380,000) = around a 28th level magic user.

On the otherhand, if one converts them like that, it should be noted a 28th level magic user in 3.5/3e might have a large disadvantage if transferred straight as the type of equipment and the things that can be combined can create a much stronger build in 3.5, hence just for equipment a 28th level 3.5 magic user will stomp on a transferred magic-user typically, unless you give them equivalent equipment as well, which is also part of the headache.

My suggestion, in order to play 3.5, just start new characters. But that's just my opinion.

You are definately better off changing "by heart" rather than trying any mechanical translation. The rules are too different, and things compare way differently to each other.

Got any AD&D books you want to part with ?
