Adamantine animated object gets DR? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Hi all,

I'm preparing for a nasty line up, a lich with a phylactery encapsulated into a tiny adamantine sphere, with a permanent invisibility and dito fly spell, it is also animated (as per the animated object spell) and then awakened (as per spell).

Now: how do I calculate this little entity's hitpoint and DR?

I figured that as a sphere of adamantium it would have DR, but the construct traits says nothing about this. Also, how does the hitpoints/inch and the animated objects hitpoint resolve? Is the two added, or is it just one of the two that is accounted for?

Please help with this nasty item!

Once you animate it, the object is just that - an animated object. Give it a straight up DR5/- since it is adamantine, but its hit points are those of a tiny animated object. It has 2 hit points (d10/2, if you roll for hp).

Animated objects keep their DR and they only get the hitpoints listed in their monster entry.

wait, wouldn't it have its normal hardness, rather than DR? :thinks:

Isnt hardness the object equivalent to damage reduction anyhow?

well adamantine has hardness of 20.... Equipment made of adamantine definitely provides a lower DR than that

That is the damage reduction it gives to its wearer, not what it itself has. Because of this, I woudl actually say the phylactary has 20 DR, not 5... because it is the DR of itself, not a creature inside.

Really, this is the time that you should be fudging it as a DM. This is a highly custom NPC thing already, so give it the DR you want it to have.

Energy damage ignores DR.

Animated objects have Hardness, not DR. So that adamantine sphere will not have DR, but will have Hardness 20.

Raymond's got it right.

Energy attacks bypass damage reduction entirely. Against hardness, however, energy damage is reduced by 1/2 or 1/4 BEFORE you apply the numerical reduction. Hardness applies against EVERYTHING. Damage Reduction only applies to attacks.

They are not alike. Not at all.

Right on. Also remember that, contrary to popular opinion, hardness applies to sonic damage unless specifically stated otherwise. So Psionic sonic (that's tough to say) will bypass hardness, but without a side-note magical sonic won't.
