I'm curious if anyone would like to take a stab at adapting them to the various encounters detailed in RHoD. I'm curious in adapting encounters that emphasize team tactics and use of multiple Hobgoblin types that encourage synergistic battle encounters. Anyone care to be the first? :D |

| Subversive10-02-07, 10:53 PM | Since the better hobgoblins of the MMV set were between CR 5 and CR 8, I decided to examine chapter 5 first. The book states that Warsoul Hobgoblins are generally tribal leaders, so it makes sense that as the party journeys through the Wyrmsmokes - a hobgoblin tribal area - they might encounter a Warsoul and his retinue travelling toward the Fane. The most basic encounter is one that is listed in the book: 1 Hobgoblin Warsoul 4 lvl 1 Hobgoblin Warriors (personal retinue, factored into the Warsoul CR) 2 lvl 3 Hobgoblin Duskblades 1 Hobgoblin Warcaster 1 Hobgoblin Spellscourge The book lists this as a CR 9 encounter. I would suggest that if the CR 9 hobgoblin patrol random encounter is rolled, sub this encounter in 50% of the time. That patrol consists of 7 Hob Veterans, 1 Sergeant, and 1 Doom Hand Cleric. Interestingly, none of those NPCs is above a CR 3, while the Warsoul encounter has a CR 8, a CR 5, a CR 4, and 2 CR 3's. While the same overall challenge rating, I feel it represents a tougher fight for the party in general, In addition, the newly introduced feats - Battle Magic Tactics, and Mage Slayer, will make this a difficult, magically-oriented fight. |

Yummy. And 'aw man"! Every time someone analyzes a new book and how to roll it into RHoD (cough MIC cough archon cough) and the Core rules I end up having to buy it. I got MMIV JUST for the dragonspawn, and I leafed thru MMV. I liked the hobgoblin chapter, though I didn't read it entirely. And now it goes on the "to buy" list. Anyway, one VERY nice substitute above, thank you. Gerry |
