I'm going to keep this pretty short and to the point. I'm running an idea around in my head of making my DMing style actually be in character. As in, when I DM it wouldn't be me, it would be someone else entirely with their own voice, personality, quirks, etc. As such, I'm thinking about making my players constantly stay in character even when asking general questions. Questions like: "What does the room look like?", "How many men are there?", etc. And possibly even making extremely rules oriented questions would be in character.

What I want to know is: Has anyone ever done anything like this before? What were the problems with it? What were the successes? Any info you could give me would be great.

It seems a little...extreme. I would imagine players getting frustrated if everything was in character.

I'm not sure what you mean by DMing in character though...are you planning on creating a god-like "DM" character in your campaign world?

 this sounds scary and a bit too far. unless you are going to create a character in the game that is the "Dungeon Master" like the cartoon had.

now there is an idea within itself. make a series of adventures based off the cartoon....

No, no. My dungeon master wouldn't actually be a character within the story. All it would be is me taking on a personality out of game to make everything feel a little more character oriented. Think of it like a movie with an actor who does nothing but voice overs to help the movie flow, but you never actually meet the narrator within the sotry itself.
As for the characters players constantly being in charater, it was just an idea.

Haha, exactly. Except you did eventually meet Galadriel.

Reminds me of one of the video game RPGs where your talking to a random townsperson and they tell you about something in character and how happy they are that they can press A to jump.
