| Mr. Leet07-10-05, 11:40 AM | Ello again Me needs more helpsie (And this means that my players, Ådne, Thomas and Ole-Dan must turn away immediately!). As you might have read in a previous thead, I'm making an NPC chef on a ship who is a traitor and poisons everyone's food so pirates can easily take the ship and kill everyone as the poison makes them sleep heavily (Don't you just love coup de grace?). Thingy is, I'm thinking of making that chef a gnome tiefling. Now, ze question... What racial ability modifiers should I use from the two? Both? Or just one? And which? For example, in my world, gnomes have +2 int and -2 str, but tieflings have +2 int, +2 dex and -2 cha. Would my gnome use his gnomish racial traits, his tiefling racial traits or both? And one more thing... How does LA affect CR? I was thinking of making him a lvl 1 commoner, but his tiefling template would probably make him a bit higher CR than what of a commoner, so how do I calculate it? Not sure where to look and in which book, so any help would be appreciated. And remember... I love you guys. |
| jukar07-10-05, 07:06 PM | Level adjustment doesn't affect challenge rating, as far as I know. Could be wrong, though. As for the ability modifiers, I would also say that you apply both. |
| the artful dodger07-10-05, 07:37 PM | Neither tiefling nor gnome is a template. They're both races (in 3E at least, in earlier editions tiefling is a catch-all name for characters with a bit of fiendish ancestry and could result in a wide range of special racial qualities depending on the exact ancestry). |

I know gnome isn't a template, and I don't think I ever said so either. But fine, then tell me, please, if the tiefling IS a template in my world, who's racial ability modifiers would you use? Both? |

Templates add to existing races, they don't overwrite them (aside from possible qualities like type or HD size, but that's always clearly indicated). |

The LA makes the enemy have the power of a higher level character, thus increasing the ECL. As for a character the ECL is the CR, The CR is raised. This is the way i do it unless it says otherwise in the MM, like in the case of vampire and half dragon, where the abilities would be more useful to a PC than a NPC. A first level tiefling rogue according to the DMG would be CR 1, but as this groups commoners and warriors as as strong as one another, i would make it a level 2 commoner, CR 1. |
| J Milburn07-11-05, 07:01 AM | And yes, if you are using tieflings as a template in your campaign, they will probably be an +2 LA rather than +1, as you also get all the bonuses from your base race, aswell as your template as dodger said. |
