Adulthood table in the phb [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-07-07, 11:38 PM What does everyone think the adulthood section in the random starting age table on pg 109 means?

This is to gather unbiased information for an arguement.

02-08-07, 03:33 AM its used for knowing when "ulanda" the girl next door wont go out with you. and you need to search elsewhere for a wench.

finding a woman in the quaint little town your from cant be done. you need to search other realms. and when you find out that they dont like zero level fighters you look to kill orcs. and when you returne your still not good enough. then you want to kill dragons.

it all comes down to impressing your girl. the fifth level bard has play on your girl. what are you going to do to impress her. bring back a couple heads of an ettin of course. because they like that sort of thing.

all in all. we get levels in our best class because of women. and that is why we leave our town at such n' such age.... to impress the girl next door.

take it from me. stay home and mooch off your parents as long as you can. because you might end up dead at the hands of some evil lich. at 18 years of age. lol:P

But do you see it as anything else? I ask this to everybody. And I'm looking more specifically at the section labeled adulthood. What do ya'll think it means.

I'm trying to not give too much away as I want this to be as unbiased as possible.

I don't have my PHB with me, and I'm too lazy too look it up in the SRD, but I'd say:
Aproximately when a character reaches physical adulthood as a for instance, doesn't get any taller without aid from Enlarge Person. It may also be when they're done training enough to be first level in a PC class.

This is more or less what I would say. I'd just like to point out, though, that it's not in the SRD.

02-12-07, 09:42 AM Its supposed to represent when these races are 'mature' enough to start off on thier own and become thier own people. People below that age are generally to be considered not mature enough by that race's standards to live by themselves and contribute to society in a meaningful way.

Its like in real life, kids become adults at 18, when they gradutate high school (ideally). When you do reach 18 you have two choices to be considered a 'productive adult': either go to college and further your education or get a job.

It's means you are an adult. I figured that was self-evident based on the name.

02-12-07, 09:54 AM It's not in the SRD because it's information regarding character creation, which was specifically left out of the SRD (supposedly to necessitate the purchase of books to play).

02-12-07, 12:18 PM I'm betting this is for yet another discussion on the high adult threshold age for elves.

But, long story short, adulthood is the time at which you are generally considered by your society to be old enough to be responsible for you own actions, capable of fending for yourself, as well as being old enough to be a productive member of the community (aka, get a job, raise a family, etc).
