I have seen an increase in the number of new players posting on the boards, and wanted to set up some sort of directory of hints and tips compiled from veterans of D&D(basically anyone who has actually played D&D for at least a few months)
1. Buy the Player's Handbook(can get used for cheaper) and a few dice(1d4,d6(you have a lot of these),1d8, 2d10, 1d12, 1d20)
2. Find an established group to play with
3. If 2 is not possible, then pick up the Dungeon Master's Guide and Monster Manual(only need 1 of each)
4. Have everyone read through the PHB(Player's Handbook)
4a. Any ?'s, ask here(I might make a FAQ)
5. Find a Level 1 adventure(there are a few on this site)
That is all I can think of now, Veterans and newbies(I hate that word) feel free to post.

6: Use common sense.
7: Learn the rules
8: Once you know the rules, realize that they are only as good as the fun you have out of them, and throw out everything you dont think is fun

If you can't find a group, find a local gaming store and they'll help you find a group. They're good at that from what I've seen. Also, try online gaming for a while, that'll at least get you used to the aspect of an RPG. AND VIDEO GAMES DO NOT COUNT AS ROLE-PLAYING!!!
