Look around for an existing group and see if you can get an invite into their game. If you do get an invite, be friendly and curtious. Learn to play as a player, it isn't easy to start out as the Game Master. If there is a local gaming club in your area that meets once a month or so then go to it since it is a good place to meet other players. If the group you get in with has a playing style you are not comfortable with then start looking for another group.

Once in a gaming group, bring your own snacks plus a few extra you are willing to share. It doesn't hurt to bribe <cough> the Game Master with a snack he likes since that bribe could turn a critical hit by a monster against you into a normal hit.

Also, be prepared to bring your imagination. RPGs are all about your imagination and story telling.

As a player, you will need only a few things.
1. A notepad.
2. A pencil and maybe a pen.
3. A set of Dice. The number of sides on a typical set are 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 20. There are also 30 sided and percentile or 100 sided dice, but the basic set of 4 sided through 20 sided is all you need.
4. The Players Handbook for Dungeons & Dragons, or the players guide for whatever game you are starting out in.

If you want to be the Game Master, then you will need everything listed above plus several more books. For D&D you will need to add:

1. Dungeon Masters Guide
2. Monster Manual
3. A Campaign Setting or World like the Forgoten Realms or Greyahwk (this is optional since you can create your own world)
4. Any Expansion books you want to include in your campaign, and there are lots of expansion books but they are all optional.

Seriously, you can get the PHB for around $20 if you shop online.

Books tend to range anywhere from $15 U.S. to $40 U.S. depending on things like Hard Cover or Softcover and how much color artwork is in the book as well as page count. A friend of mine added up his collection once, and I believe he calculated it to be in the $400 U.S. to $500 U.S. and he doesn't even own all of the books but there were some from other d20 companies thrown in as well I'm sure. For the 3 core books, you will probably end up spending close to $80 to $100 U.S. depending on where you purchase them from. You might be able to find better discounts at some online stores. Throw in Dice, Character Sheets, a GM's Screen and your adding anouther $20 to $30 U.S. depending on where you buy.

Personally I recommend you get in with another gaming group either through school, the local gaming hobby store, or a local gaming club if there is one in your area. By getting an invite into another group you will be able to learn the game much quicker and be able to ask questions of more experienced players as well as the DM. This will also limit the amount of money you spend. If you are not the DM, then the only books you need are the Players Handbook and any supplemental books for the character class you want to play. These extra books can be bought later or over time if that would help out the old pocket book. Remember you will also need dice and a character sheet, but you can download the character sheet and print it out free of charge. After that it's a notepad and pencil.

Good Luck,
